“Lovely hotel”
Reviewed 4 November 2013

We had a 2 night stay at the hotel Magdalena. It was rather difficult to find as signs ran out travelling up the hill out of the town of Antequera which was well worth a visit for a pretty small town and lovely tapas. Beautiful surroundings and gorgeous hotel to look at. A little tired inside and could do with some maintainence and updating in places. The spa was nice and we had to ourselves, however we were unable to use the jacuzzi as it was rather cold. Food was overpriced, Antequera itself was easy to get to for dinner and more advised. Staff were friendly and helpful. Very good for a golf hotel.

Magdalena is a strange place. I wish I had stepped back in time to be reminded of the convent , instead I felt like I was in 'The Shining'. It could be amazing, but modern furniture and features have been added which means the charm has been lost.

We had a pleasant enough stay, but there are little touches that really let it down. The air con does not work. I had to ask three times before anyone would take a look. I was told it was working, but it is a small puff at best. Be warned if going at the height of summer! Now I know it is an old convent, but it also says it is a 5 star hotel with air conditioning!

I also find that 5 star hotels don't usually have to ask guests not to remove food at breakfast or to take the bathrobes. The bathrobes were old and scraggy....so for them to suggest I would want to take one is comical.

This hotel is set amongst olive groves with lovely views of the surrounding countryside, just a few minutes by car from Antequera. Our Junior Suite was very spacious and comfortable. The hotel is spotlessly clean. We thoroughly enjoyed using the small spa. Breakfasts were extremely good - an enormous choice of quality food.
But the hotel only rates 4 stars in my opinion. The evening meals (we eat there twice) was very limited and not the full lunchtime menu as we thought. The sun loungers were mostly falling apart and only a few available. The level of English from the staff was limited. Also, while some staff were excellent there were examples of exactly the opposite.
I thought the hotel was very good in so many ways but definitely not a 5 star establishment.
Recommended but with reservations........

Why only rating it 4, you ask? The evening meals (we eat there twice) was very limited and not the full lunchtime menu as we thought. Don't get me wrong, I thought the hotel was very good in so many ways but definitely not a 5 star establishment.

Hotel location is far from the town. Not easy to get there by car if you are new to the area. From downtown to the hotel it is 15 euros by taxi.

Hotel is luxury, breakfast, service and rooms are all perfect .

Indoor swimming pool was amazing

We stayed at this hotel and found it to be a really lovely relaxing place to stay. It is quiet and understated and in a beautiful location. The breakfast was quite frankly the best I have ever seen or eaten and nothing is too much trouble for the staff. Ask for directions to the pilgrim route and you can walk or cycle to antequera. A really lovely find.

I stayed Hotel Convento La Magdalena in June 2013 for 3 nights for holiday. It seems that the hotel is built for people staying and playing golf at the near-by golf-course. I didn't go to play golf, but enjoyed my stay.

Pros:
(1) It's originally convent, and converted into a hotel. Naturally, the building is beautiful.
(2) Room is pretty large, and comfortable. The rooms are nicely furnished. My room was on the ground floor and I can walk out to the garden area from my room.
(3) Staff are very nice. I was pleasantly surprised that staff at the reception can speak decent English.
(4) Pool (small, not for serious swimming) and the garden outside the pool is very pleasant.
(5) Food is very good. So you actually don't need to go out. One day we came back very late, and the restaurant was basically closed, but the staff were kind enough to prepare appetizers and wines for a light late dinner.
(6) The hotel is in the middle of the mountains. Naturally the view is amazing. I was too hot but you could do hiking I guess.

Cons:
(1) It's in the middle of mountain, far from the downtown Antequera, so you need a car to do anything. I guess if you are traveling in the region, you are driving though.
(2) Really there's nothing around the hotel (other the beautiful mountains and golf course), so if you need something at night, good luck...

Room Tip: You can choose either upper floor with a terrace or ground-floor from which you can walk out to the...
