We ate her as part of a DBB deal and were so looking forward to it. Many years ago, we'd spend our honeymoon staying and eating in Paradors where we had many wonderful experiences of local cuisine. The restaurant at the Parador in Carmona sadly did not deliver. The restaurant itself is a very large room and on a saturday evening, we were expecting more diners than the handful in the room. Alarm bells rang when the Maitre'd was sullen and unhelpful, but hey, the food was going to be great?! Our starters of a "local speciality' was enormous and revolting. I'm sure Migas are worth trying but certainly not here! The the main course we elected for a venison dish which was equally disappointing - it was more like a fairly tasteless risotto than the dish described on the menu. The puddings were a "help yourself" buffet where basically everything just tasted overly sweet and gloopy!!! No, we did not enjoy our dining experience and were not overly impressed with breakfast the next morning, especially the lack of good coffee! As a result of our experience at this Parador, we decided not to risk eating in any others that we visited. I hate leaving negative reviews, but this restaurant really was not good in our opinion.

Initial Surly service led by Maître D' did not bode well for the meal.
Our starter was a brown glue like local dish which was not appetising and bland.
When our main course of fish arrived mine was dry and overlooked my companion's was half cooked raw in places and cold. When returned it was simply put under the grill and sent back to our table.
Desserts were fine mainly bought in and fruit but acceptable.
When we complained we were dealt with poorly as we guessed would happen.
One of the worst experiences I've had

We have stayed at the Parador itself and it is wonderful - see separate review.

The restaurant is a different story. We tried the 40 EUR tasting menu the first night. Food was ok but not stunning. It was the off hand and surly service and lack of ambience that ruined the experience. Plates were almost thrown onto the table, waiters were having conversations in raised voices across the room, the room itself is impressive but echoes badly, plates were being piled onto trolleys and shunted around the room. A good meal is about more than the food, it's about the experience. This reminded me of Butlins holiday camps when I was a boy back in the 1960s.

Second night we went to La Yedra 200m away and had the kind of experience we'd hoped for in the Parador. I suggest you also try La Yedra.

It is a challenge to travel and sample cuisines that are not the same as we could get back in the states, so when we titled this review with the affirmative "yes, the best meals we have ever had" it is truly saying a lot. I would like to preface that we had the luxury of dining at the Parador 5 times over the course of our stay at the magnificent castle, and all of the dishes were superb. The croquettes with cheese potato and bacon filling we're great as was the cold soup (their version of gazpacho). The meat cannelloni found on the starters menu was enormous and was topped with a delicious cream sauce. We liked this dish in particular so much that we ordered it on three different occasions, but all of these dishes were just stepping stones toward the pantheon of fantastic dishes.

There were two fantastic dishes. The first was the roasted leg of lamb. This exquisite dish paired what was the freshest leg of lamb we had ever experienced with an herb marinade and slow roasted. The meat not only fell off of the bone, it melted in your mouth. It wasn't fatty or sinewy, it was the perfect lamb dish.

The second dish was the veal entrecôte. For some of you who don't care for veal, see above for the lamb, otherwise I would strongly, strongly suggest this particular dish. I have never had such a thick, melt in your mouth cut of veal like this before and am currently seeking out butchers back home to get the cut so that we can replicate it. This dish, by itself, will forever be emblazoned in my recollections. This was the best veal dish that I have ever experienced.

The restaurant itself is situated in a castle on top of the highest point in Carmona. It overlooks vast plains where in medieval times the residence of this magnificent structure could see invaders 3 days away. The service is that of fine dining and they have menus in different languages (including English). They offer a prefix faire consisting of a starter, main course and dessert - the dishes were so big that we could never get to the desserts - and it runs only 30 Euro. A bargain!

Enjoy the view, the food and the service and if you're ever stuck with what you would like...try the veal :)
