“A Real Andalucian Jewel - My Favourite”
Reviewed 29 June 2009

This is a real jewel, an oasis of beauty and tranquility.

I've travelled enough to be jaundiced about staying in hotels, even apparently good ones (of which I've stayed in many) and as a result I tend to be over critical. However, Casa de Carmona is a refreshing exception, with it's own unique style and atmosphere, which I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone wanting a luxurious and peaceful haven.

We arrived at about eleven in the evening after a three hour drive through the mountains and over the plain to Carmona; we were tired, hungry and thirsty. We were instantly refreshed, greeted warmly and served drinks in one of the stylish drawing rooms whilst we were checked in and our bags taken upstairs.

The hotel is a lovingly restored palace dating from at least the times of the moors with later additions, and comprising a number of courtyards overlooked by balconies that give access to the rooms.

A great deal of attention has been given to preserving the original character of the building and an air of tranquility and aristocratic charm. Most of the furniture is antique and the decore is warm and sympathetic.

Our room was gorgeous, apparently the old chaple for the house, with a four poster bed under dome with moorish carvings, a sitting area and pleasing en-suite bathroom.

We did not try the restaurant; however, breakfast was a deliciously simple affair taken in the loggia.

This is a small, stylish hotel where it is possible to unwind, relax and appreciate. It is not a large modern hotel and it does not have all the facilities that you would expect in an anodised downtown five star conforming to a globalised formula; it is a truly Andaluician, family run hotel, which has a great deal of charm, warmth and originality, which are sorely lacking in most hotels; a veritable jewel.

We will certainly go back, many times!

The Casa De Carmona is now one of the finest hotels in Carmona and the Owner/Managers, Felipe and Reyes went out of their way to make the stay fantastic. The food is superb and you really feel the ambiance of the past. 10 out of 10, we will recommend it anytime.

The last time we stayed in Carmona we stayed at the Parador and enjoyed the stay so much that we decided to return. Unfortunately we could not get in to the Parador and so our travel agent booked us into this so called five star hotel. Once we checked in and saw our room we walked over to the Parador, which happened to have a room and immediately moved.
To summarise the Casa de Carmona, everything was broken. Even the handle on the front door of the hotel had been broken for years. The door to the room stuck, the wardrobe door needed a crowbar to open it. I can’t remember being in a more run down establishment, even in our student days when we couldn’t afford much.
I think we must have been the only guests booked in as there were no staff available, just one very friendly but lonely soul. The only way I could attract his attention was to go to the front door and ring the main bell. He explained that there would be no dinner available that night because of a wedding. Presumably the cook must have been cooking at a wedding elsewhere.
Once we got back to the Parador with its cleanliness, and magnificent views over the surrounding plains, where everything worked (anything that had broken was fixed) we felt relieved. Looking at the standard of guests at the Parador, which was busy, compared with the Casa de Carmona, which had no other guests that we were aware of, says it all. The word must have got around – unfortunately not to our travel agent – and potential guests had voted with their feet.
This hotel makes a mockery of its rating of five stars. One star would be very generous.
If you want somewhere to stay that is not broken down DON’T COME HERE!

We, a young couple, stayed one night during the semana santa at Casa de Carmona in Carmona. We had a memorable stay. The hosts did go out of their way to make us feel welcome - and we certainly did! The place is very pretty with a decandent beauty. The patio and the room where breakfast is served is also very pretty. The continental breakfast is good with fresh fruits and eegs. The host helped planning the day with recommendations in the area. Our room was spacious, and the bathroom very charming with an old fashioned bathtub. The sheets are pretty oldfashioned. The room was very dark, but we did not make the effort to ask about a brighter room. Carmona itself is a very nice quiet village close to seville. The hotel was very reasonably priced compared with hotels in Seville during the semana santa. Go here if you like old and charm. If you expect something modern, luxurious, newly renovated - find something else.

On a favorable recommendation, my wife and I stopped for lunch at the Casa de Carmona on a Saturday afternoon and were completely taken by the charm and superbly appointed restaurant and rooms of this exquisitely restored former palace. The Casa de Carmona is elegant, comfortable, and tranquil. Our lunch was among the best we have had in the last five months in Spain. The manager and staff spared no effort in ensuring our enjoyment and satisfaction. For anyone travelling near Carmona, don´t miss this outstanding experience. We look forward to many repeated visits!!

We have just returned from spending three delightfully relaxing days in the stylish spendour of this beautiful private hotel. From the moment we were welcomed by Felipe Guardiola, the ownere, we could not have enjoyed ourselves more. A beautifully furnished and light filled bedroom and excellent food coupled with very personal and attentive service, combined to make this a thoroughly relaxing and comfortable stay. Casa de Carmona is a singular hotel full of character and delighful corners in a charming quarter of this town and a refreshing change from the blandness of so many five star hotels.

Do not stay here if you are expecting a luxury 5 star property. This is absolutely not a 5 star property. It is barely a 2 star property.

Their website is totally inaccurate. It says that when you arrive a housekeeper will offer to unpack all your belongings, and on offer will be a vast array of services, with a focus on beauty treatments and massage. The focus on the website is on attention to detail, escape and luxury in a traditional setting. The reality is that this couldn't be further from the truth.

When we (myself and my wife) arrived we were given a room with 2 single beds. It was dark and horrible. I complained and we were moved to another room which was slightly better. The rooms are old fashioned, but not in a good way. They do not appear to have been maintained at all since the original refurb in 1989. The smell musty, and have damps stains and cracks everywhere. Also the fridge appeared to have leaked something onto a rug, and had not been taken care of.

When I tried to organise a massage and pedicure (as advertised in their literature), they could only find a 1 hour window over 2 days when someone could offer a massage (not an onsite type service as is alluded to in their literature). They could not offer a pedicure at all.

There was no hot water for the majority of our stay, just on one morning!

There was a video (VCR) player and micro hifi in the room, but neither were plugged in or connected. Who uses a VCR these days anyway? If they had provided some movies for us to watch that might have helped. Really all the audio/visual equipment needs be updated.

The pool table that appears in the hotels literature, does not exist in reality.

The young staff try to be helpful, but they are inexperienced, and obviously do not have 5 star hotel experience. There is a seriously lack of investment in staff, as well as in the building and the services on offer (or lack there of).

The shame of it is that this could be a great property. By all means visit it to see it's lovely patio and setting. However, do not stay here. It is very much on it's way to ruin, and unlikely to remain in business for much longer. At 150E a night for a "junior suite" it is a rip off. If I had paid 50E a night, with the full expectation of staying in a old building with no mod cons, then that might have been OK.

In summary, do not be fooled by their website, or the positive reviews on here. Even the locals explained that it hasn't been any good for a while. Staff at Seville airport on our way home felt sorry for us that we had been duped into staying there!

Alternative hotels the Parador and Alcazar De La Reina which we looked upon enviously, look a much better bet.

  • Liked — The outward appearance of the building
  • Disliked — The room and the service. No way 5 star.
