“Iberian Lynx Trip”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 October 2013

We arrived at the hotel late afternoon after a long drive from staying with family near Gandia, Valencia. The reception area was closed and so we walked over to the bar/restaurant area.
Catching the attention of a waiter we handed over our emailed confirmation of the accommodation and he then promptly sought out a gentleman who guided us back to the reception to check in and show us to our room. Being as we were only a couple we were only allowed access to the upstairs of the apartment, the accommodation is built in seperate apartment blocks, but if we wanted to use the back garden veranda area that was fine. This area was well planted with shrubs and flowers and therefore was a very pleasant area to sit and read. The upstairs accommodation consisted of two twin rooms and a bathroom. The style is rustic with dark wood furniture, and old style beds. The rooms were clean, had TV albeit only Spanish, and plenty of towels, they also offered shower gel & shampoo. There is a small balcony off from the upstairs landing area. The one complaint is the shower. It was very small and had no shelf for shampoo/shower gel etc which made showering a little tricky, plus our actual shower needed repair really. We arrived on a Thursday late afternoon and after having checked in and unpacked we decided on a drink and dinner. We were given no information about meal times etc when checking in & so arrived too early for dinner and to the incorrect room. We enjoyed a cold beer at the bar/diningarea & then we were told dinner was at 8pm., time for another cold beer then. We were the only people in the restaurant that night, but the food and service were very good, and the staff appeared to have patience with our constant use of our translation book.
The next morning was a repeat, we didnt know where to go for breakfast but thankfully the waiter from the night before was on duty and helped us out.
The hotel is ideally situated for the park, and with just a short drive up further into the hills for ideal walking tracks, quite well signposted where you can see all species of wildlife. We spotted deer, wild pig, numerous birds, and wild cat too. We were hoping to see Lynx but this time it was not to be.
We were not with a guided tour and our Spanish is limited and therefore it did inhibit us a little & perhaps we missed out on items of information becuase of our lack of communication but we thoroughly enjoyed the stay.

I stayed here as part of a lynx-spotting trip and it is handily placed in the hills above Andujar for all kinds of wildlife and bird spotting outings, avoiding the 14 km drag up the winding roads from the town below.
The accommodation is in houses, most suited to putting up families, with a self-contained double suite downstairs and two bedrooms sharing a bathroom upstairs, with access via a spiral staircase with tiny (narrow) stair treads thus I found it safer to come down backwards. Although I had the upstairs to myself, with no separating door from the stairs it did not feel like having a bathroom en suite. The bedroom (twin beds) was dark with one tiny vertical slit of a window. Both the bedroom and bathroom have sloping eaves and I almost laid myself out by hitting my head twice getting up from the lavatory and once while rummaging into my luggage on the second bed.
The walk-in shower has a very narrow entrance and no internal shelves to place shampoo, etc. Even the slimmest of my fellow travellers had difficulties entering and leaving, as well as then flooding the floor reaching out for soap and other items. The constant flooding may have accounted for the smell reported in all bathrooms. One sloping shelf above the basin was barely adequate for a tooth brush and paste.
The bed had the ubiquitous Spanish bolsters (no pillows). Good drawer space and hanging space (albeit very short, no good for dresses) but NO MIRROR in the bedroom which would be very inconvenient if one were sharing the bathroom.
My rooms appeared clean but the bins were emptied (and the towels changed) only every other day.
The television had 40+ channels of TV and radio but all in Spanish, while the (free) wifi just stretched to my building, furthest from reception, but was so unreliable, with either the wireless or the internet itself cutting out and back in all the time, as to be almost useless.
So, it is not so luxurious or smart but then we did not spend a lot of time in our rooms.
The restaurant/bar-breakfast room are in a main building a short walk away, past the shop, through the main car park and a rather scruffy outside bar and children's play area. Inside there some fascinating things on the walls, photographs, posters, paintings, mouflon horns.... The restaurant has double TV screens typically showing two different football matches, but thankfully silently.
The food was extremely good for a tour party (7 + 2 guides) with (at dinner) varied starters laid out on the table and then a choice of two main courses (fish or meat) plus one vegetarian special, and several desserts. The Iberian ham (even at breakfast), pheasant pate, "grandmother style" tomato salad, pork fillet and fillets of dorade are especially memorable. Breakfast of bread, ham, cheese was more than adequate and the picnic lunches were great. The restaurant staff were most obliging in respecting individual choices of cooking style/detailed contents of the dish or needs for avoiding certain food types, e.g. "leave out the shrimps".
Indeed the staff everywhere were most obliging. I wanted to use the pool on a hot afternoon but struggled to open the stiff bolt on the gate, thus asked the man from the shop/reception to help. It was only after he had walked down and done so that he told me that normally the pool is closed in October, but to enjoy myself anyway. The water was indeed "fresh" but it is a lovely pool: clean, and deep enough for serious exercise (1.4-1.9m). There is a smaller adjacent pool which is more shallow and more like a jacuzzi.
For the location and food as well as staff attitudes, I would rate it Good-Very Good but the accommodation is more Average-Poor.

Room Tip: The ground floor suites are very much nicer than the upstairs bedrooms with shared bath. The rooms...

We were on a lynx wildlife trip and this accommodation was part of the package. It is situated in the middle of the Sierra du Andujar N.P. The owner and staff were very welcoming, the food was very good and so much of it. Packed lunches are available on request. Although there were no children in our group the accommodation blocks would be very good for families, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. We had a bedroom, lounge and kitchenette. Swimming pool for summer visits. Gardens were well planted attracting bird life. We had a bush with 17 siskins.
During our time in the park we saw over 104 species of birds, 12 species of mammal including four sightings of the lynx.

Room Tip: Lower floor had lounge and kitchenette.
