Hostal Don Peque

Reviewed 29 September 2012

Our arrival at Hostal Don Peque was not the easiest - locating the hotel can be tricky and we had to drive around the block a couple of times before we had a clue! We were lucky enough to find a car parking space nearby, but allow plenty of time for your often-frustrating search, and any vehicle larger than our VW Polo won't stand a chance on the streets - although the hotel advised that there are two pay car parks fairly locally.

Don't be put off by the unprepossessing entrance to the hotel - because the smile that greets you from the Reception desk on the first floor once you've struggled with your luggage makes it all worthwhile! The French husband-and-wife team are the most welcoming and friendly hosts, and the breakfast on the roof terrace that they serve is a delight - although place yourself under the numerous parasols to have the best experience.

The hotel is very clean and a great deal of thought has gone into the Moroccan-inspired rooms - our spacious third floor 'blue' room had some lovely touches, and the furnishings were fresh and new. Whilst I would not pretend that you could take much advantage of the promised 'sea view' due to the rooftops in the way, the table and two chairs on the balcony was a good place to relax after the beach before taking in the many attractions that Nerja has in store!

One of the main benefits of the Hostal Don Peque is its central location - there are bars and restaurants a plenty very close by and the street that the hotel is situated on closes to traffic in the evening so that a number of bustling street cafés can spill out just in front of your door. This could be a bit noisy if your room is on that side of the hotel, but we never had any problems being on the opposite side (and being 'night owls' - the hotel gives you 24-hour access).

We thoroughly enjoyed our four-night stay at the Hostal Don Peque, and would definitely return for its friendly greeting, central location, excellent value-for-money and the fact that nothing seems too much trouble - we were delighted by the recommendation for a restaurant on our last night and the hotel even made the booking and arranged a prime position on the terrace...now, there's customer service for you!

Stayed here between the 24th-28th August with my husband. After reading numerous good reviews on trip advisor we decided to choose this little gem in the heart of the town of Nerja. The room was great-very nicely finished by Clara and just as comfortable as you could wish for and always left spotless by the cleaning lady.

The hostal is very pretty with paintings and nice furnishings all over the place and it is located just in the middle of the town with bars, restaurants and shops on your doorstep literally! If you want a small, family-like place which is clean and value for money then this is the place for you and the great asset is its central location.

Clara and Robert are a nice French couple who run this place; they were always helpful and whenever we had a query or needed to make a reservation Clara or Robert would always take care of everything. Thanks Robert and Clara:)

The breakfast was simple yet very good -Clara makes the jams herself and they are truly delicious! The freshly brewed coffee was excellent too as were the bread and cup-cakes. It is served on the terrace which offers a great view of the town and sea.

We would choose this Hostal once again if we come back to Nerja. Thanks Clara and Robert:) Keep it up:)

Very centrally located and easy to walk to all beaches. The street in which the hotel sits is car traffic during the day and it is closed off at night during the summer, so very quiet area.
We had a 3rd floor room on the main street and it had a great little terrace to dry swimsuits and sit and have a wine or RUM (Spanish rum is delicious if you can find it).
The terrace on the roof is used for breakfast which is basic and delicous. I loved the REAL coffee being poured. We went up late one evening with a bottle of wine and played cards.
You have access to some great beaches and food here so a three day stay is perfect

Caveat- There were only two of us and we booked several months in advance but ended up with a double bed with a set of bunk beds in our room. We noticed that the other rooms did not have this set up and figured they were full but we did not expect this and it made the room very tight and small.

The Hostel Don Peque is slap bang in the middle of the town, attractively decorated, well furnished and comfortable. The incusive breakfasts are served, by the very friendly French owners, on a terrace on the roof of the building. Not the very best view but very relaxed and pleasant. Despite it's situation I didn't notice noise at night. Rooms have fridge, sat TV, Wi Fi are very clean and our two had balconies. The only fault is that there is nowhere to sit and relax in the hostel (lounge, sitting area etc). I would visit again and recommend, however I would suggest it is fine for 2 or 3 nights. Unless you are very organised and have days out planned.

My husband, my daughter and I stayed at Don Peque for two nights in the middle of July and it was wonderful!
The Hostal is very well located close to everything you will need and want. The room was very charming and clean and it had a deck with beautiful view.
Also on the roof there is a terrace where you can have fantastic views of the Mediterranean and the mountains, where we enjoyed it in the afternoon with some wine, cheese and jamon that we bought in a store close by. The breakfast is served there on the terrace; it was really good with delicious home made jam made by the talent hostess, Clara. She decorated the hotel so well with beautiful pictures that she painted and with her art work.
The owners, Robert and Clara are wonderful and very helpful; they made our stayed very pleasant! We loved the Hostal Don Peque and we sure will be back there!!!

If you are looking for glitz; glamour; and bling then it was nice of you to call but this is not the place for you. On the other hand, if you are looking for a little precious gem; then stay with me. For those who associate the word "hostal" with budget accommodation for young explorers offering bunk beds, this is not the case. "Hostal" indicates no supporting services other than B&B.

As you approach at street level; searching for a name sign; this little as yet unpolished gem, is slow to reveal itself. You have to look hard to find it. The sign for "Hostal" appears over a traditional door. There is an ATM next to it as part of a bank branch; which occupies the building at street level. You have found it. Press the buzzer and head up to reception to be greeted by Clara or Robert.

The first sparkles appear. Clara & Robert are your hosts in their home. They both enjoy having you as a guest and immediately make you feel welcome. Over your stay, they will be most helpful; informative and assist you in every way they can, with local information & recommendations.

They operate as a team and compliment each other very well. Clara with her sparkling eyes; radiant smile and oh la la French accent; while Robert is the "wind beneath her wings". My wife says he is a very handsome man. They will both be on the rooftop, to serve continental breakfast each morning, with great care & attention.. Should you require something more substantial, there are lots of places within a stones throw of the entrance.

Our room was on the 4th floor at the rear of the building; looking across the rooftops towards the sea. All the immediate buildings were at a lower level; so we had a vista from our balcony. It was lovely to sit out at any time ; as the back is facing south. We had a small table & two chairs; very relaxing to sip your favourite tipple & just chill out. You also have the option of going up on the rooftop top to relax and take your refreshments at any time.

As our bedroom was directly under the rooftop terrace; the room was invariable; immaculately refreshed on our return from breakfast. Our expectation was for a clean room ; clean comfortable bed; clean bathroom. All our expectations were met and more. Our stay was for seven nights. Having emptied our cases; we had more storage places than we required; which was a rare pleasure.

While the hostal is rated two star; our room was of a four star hotel standard. En suite shower/ toilet; flat screen tv / cable service; coffee/tea facilities; fridge; air conditioning;safe; proper hairdryer; all added to our positive experience. We had everything we would expect in a hotel bedroom. We also had a three panel set painting of Clara's over our bed. She is an accomplished artist and her many paintings hang throughout the hostal. My personal favourites were of the bullfighters. You could almost hear the swish of the cape and grunts of the bull; it was all in the swirl.

From a location prospective, it is perfect. Smack; bang ; in the very centre of Nerja. 250 paces from the church ; which is at one end of the Balcon de Europe. You are within walking distance of all restaurants; beaches; supermarkets; pharmacies etc. Great late at night; sit at a street side table with a last drink or coffee and watch the world go bye before you take your very short walk "home".

What more can I say than to highly recommend this little gem. We were in Nerja to attend a wedding in a nearby village. Our stay was for seven days in mid July. Temps were between 31 to 35'C. That was hot; very hot. I found I needed to retreat to our hostal in the afternoons; which was always convenient, to have a shower or nap or change of clothes. It was a perfect location for a more "Old town" experience. If hotel pool and additional facilities are important to you; then you need to locate on the perimeter of Nerja.

I think the heart of this little gemstone is Clara & Robert; the enjoy having you and meeting your needs. It is their life and they value it. As a guest ;you will benefit greatly from that and reciprocate in like manner, out of respect for you hosts. There was no excessive noise; guests did not bang doors; and went in and out quietly. It is actually a very quiet house despite marble floors and stairs.

Whenever we return to Nerja; we wil return to Clara & Robert at the Hostal Don Peque--- a little gem.

Room Tip: Our room was on the 4th floor at the rear of the building facing south; which allowed us to have sun...
