“Friendly family hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 August 2014

This was our second visit to the hotel, the food was faultless, the staff outstanding and the location was great. The hill from the beach was a challenge but at least it kept the holiday weight gain down. The town was well worth a visit day and night. The views from the Cochran's Irish Pub were amazing. We will be returning in 2015 for a longer, relaxing stay.

Visited the Villa Flamenca for the fourth time, we were there during the first week in August. We had a very nice time and would go back. We obviously like the hotel and any criticism has to be viewed in that context.
The Villa Flamenca is a pleasant Andalucian hotel just the right distance from the town and the beach although I would not recommend the walk to the beach for the elderly or infirm, each year we go the walk back from the beach somehow gets longer and steeper!
What you do have to remember about this hotel is that it is 3 star, you may have experienced 4*+ and expect 4 star plus menus, fittings and fixtures, rooms, bathrobes and slippers and entertainment but for that you pay 4 star plus money. This is an honest 3 star hotel with pleasant hard working staff. I have encountered cockroaches in 4 star plus hotels but never in the Villa Flamenca.
The hotel appears to try to cater for English people and that is reflected in the choice of foods on the buffet, you may want to try something more adventurous and Spanish and there will be something for you. The food is well cooked and enjoyable. But you won't get Chirlas al ajillo or runny chocolate with your churros.
For Andalucian cuisine head off to town and try some of the many restaurants and tapas bars. One of the good things about not being all inclusive.
There are rooms on the calle Andalucía side of the hotel and there are rooms overlooking the pool. We liked our street side room with a pleasant balcony and mountain view, other people may want to look at their family playing in the pool or look over to the evening's entertainment this would be especially appealing to Neil Diamond tribute aficionados. We had a great room overlooking the street which, was what we wanted. There are some nicely situated rooms however the aptly numbered 101 would be our nightmare. Nerja itself has a buzz at night and it’s a better idea to head to the Balcon till late. Nerja itself is a nice place with enough going on. Plenty of Spanish people holiday there so that’s a recommendation.
I don't want to criticise the hotels lack of refurbishment over the years and there really has been a lack of refurbishment, because we heard that starting in the winter one floor at a time will be getting refurbished and this will conclude in 2015. So we will be definitely be going back after that!

Room Tip: Avoid ground floor.

This was our second holiday at the Villa Flamenca having previously stayed in 2009. Very little had changed in terms of the accommodation and the hotel services/facilities, but this was not a negative because what was consistent was the value for money. The hotel is shortly to embark on a room renovation scheme and this is perhaps needed, but notwithstanding this, our room was perfectly acceptable and cleaned regularly. We booked half board and the breakfast was good, with plenty of food on offer and to suit all tastes. However with Nerja having 300+ bars and restaurants, we didn't dine in the hotel every evening. When we did, the buffet choices were varied and fine for the price we paid. The staff attitude varied - the bar and cleaning staff were great and very welcoming/accommodating, but the same can't be said of the restaurant and reception personnel who weren't very personable. The evening entertainment, which I accept is not a fundamental holiday entitlement, was very dated with songs from the 50's and 60's. However, this is not an observation just pertinent to the hotel - it seems the entertainers in Spanish holiday hotels seem to think this is what people want, but the World of music has moved on guys! Nerja is a fantastic resort and the Villa Flamenca is really well situated to enable you to enjoy the resort. I would stay there again and will look with interest to see if the renovations bring with them a price hike (hopefully not!).

Stayed here for a fortnight in July. Usually go for more expensive hotels but gave it a try and we're very pleased that we did. Were disappointed at first with the size of the room more than the decor, but had read lots of reviews so weren't expecting high standards, the rest of the hotel more than made up for this. From the pool to the bar, reception areas and the restaurant, there was nothing to fault. All areas were kept spotlessly clean and the staff were all friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Very Spanish feel to the whole area and just a present stroll to the town centre. Would definitely return.

Ok needs a refurb but they are doing this, clean, local, well positioned hotel used a lot for wedding parties, staff re really friendly, small quiet pool, only currently do half board but with local restaurants more than enough to make up for it. On a bit of a hill so the walk back from the sea is not for the faint hearted but there is a train to the beach. Food is adequate and different each day. There is a small shop opposite, very helpful guy, sells maps and gives out good directions for those adventurous people. Heard you can get a train to ronda, we drove and roads on side of mountain so not for the faint hearted, as know now about train will consider next time, roads to cordoba are excellent

Nerja is one of the nicest resorts on the Spanish mainland. It is the antithesis of Benidorm, classy, upmarket and international. It is spotlessly clean and has varied hotels. apartments and restaurants. The Villa Flamenca is a very good value 3 star hotel in a quiet part of town. It is looking a bit tired but is due a mojor refurbishment soon. Let's hope the prices don't go up accordingly. The food is plentiful and varied, the service charming and it is a homely very Spanish hotel. On the downside the rooms can be small, the pool area isn't big enough to accomodate enough sun beds, and there isn't enough shade. It is a long walk up and down to a variety of splendid beaches, and the evening entertainment isn't quite Las Vegas. BUt for a nice family atmosphere in a safe resort at affordable prices this hotel is difficult to beat. In the end you get what you pay for and if you want something a bit more upmarket you would have to pay significantly more for the pleasure.

Room Tip: The best rooms are definitely in the annexe.

Stayed here for 11 days in early July. A smaller hotel than the usual Hotels we stay at, but what it lacked in size and amenities it more than made up for in the friendly ambience of the Hotel, and the very Spanish feel it had.

Nice position with a lovely gentle walk down to the Balcon area, but although we are good walkers, we found that the walk back from Burianna beach a killer, especially in the fierce July heat.

It was what we expected of a 3* hotel. It does need updating, but it was clean and there was a good choice of food which was of a good quality.

They need more sunbeds and umbrellas, and more could be done with the sun bathing area around the pool, as a large part of it was just clay, so more than half of the sunbathing area wasn't used.

They could definitely make more of the roof terrace, as although there were plenty of sunbeds there was no shade at all, so lying out was impossible unless you wanted to risk sunstroke. Some umbrellas or shade of some sort would make a huge difference here, and would be nice for those who want to relax in peace and quiet away from the pool area.

Overall however this was good value for money, and Nerja is a lovely place and is more Spanish than anywhere else we have stayed in Spain. When we return to this area we would have no hesitation in booking again at the Villa Flamenca .

Room Tip: We requested and got a Pool facing room, but on reflection would have preferred a high floor at the...
