“Lovely stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 July 2012

We have just returned from a one week stay at The Parador (travelled with Cricketer Holidays) it was our first visit to Nerja & I'm sure we will go back. Nerja is very attractive, low rise, whitewashed, bougainvillea spilling over walls, pretty tiled walls & courtyards abound.
The hotel is extremely relaxing, it is a little dated, but none the worse for this. The chap on reception when we arrived did not make a good impression on us, he was not welcoming and broke off to look for someone's Daily Telegraph, leaving us hanging around with no apology or explanation, we had an "oooer" moment, however, all the other staff were friendly and helpful & service was excellent.
Our room overlooking the pool with sea beyond, was very comfortable. Large with lots of storage & hanging space, cool tiled floor, large balcony with comfortable cushioned covers on plastic chairs, light that was bright enough to read by later at night. There is a fridge hidden in the cupboard under the large TV, we removed the contents & filled it up with our own water, beer, olives etc.
The bathroom (with separate loo &bidet) is not large, but big enough, two sinks, bath with good shower over & shower screen, plenty of towels for bathing & swimming. Everywhere is spotlessly clean.
There is no kettle or dring making stuff, this was not important to us, but you might want to bring your travel kettle.
Breakfast is a wonderful affair taken indoors or on the outdoor terrace, we have only stayed in one other place which offered such a sumptuous selection (see other review). We never managed lunch anywhere as breakfast kept us going all day. Selection of fresh juices, lovely freshly squeezed orange juice, it's in both a jug & a refrigerated dispenser thing (don't assume it is some inferior squashy mix!) Kellogg cereals, various yoghurts, selection of prepared fruit; melons, pink grapefruit, kiwis, grapes, cherries, dried fruits & poached pears, peaches & more. Rolls & local breads, hams, cheeses, jams, honey, marmalade, plus flans, buns, donuts & then the cooked range.....didn't try anything from here, but it looked attractive. We've had buffet breakfast before offering a similar choice, the difference at Parador is the superb quality. Coffee is good, however the tea is dire & I don't like strong tea!
The grounds are beautiful & immaculate, the trees offer lots of shade, there are plenty of loungers, although there is a fair bit of lounger hogging/marking with towels. In June this was not as issue, there were plenty of other loungers to choose from, but it could be an issue in July/Aug. The pool is lovely and large with a seriously deep end, although there is no spring board (??H&S!), the only gripe being the pool bar which serves drinks & icecreams is only open 12-2, management need to address this. I went to reception to ask if there was anywhere else I could get an ice cream, they opened the bar to sell me one, several others cottoned on to this & suddenly there was a queue at the side door to the bar!!
The lower lawned area overlooks the beach, there is a lift down to the beach, however they lock the lift gate at beach level at 11pm even during fiestas, we got caught out & had to make the steep hairpin walk back! If you want to use the beach there are two areas given over to loungers & umbrellas, these have nothing to do with the hotel though & they do look a bit regimented. You can buy umbrellas & beachy stuff in the local shops, but you might want to bring your own, the hotel has no facils on the beach.
The air con could do with improving, it was adequate once it got going, but in June we were running it all night on max, the beds are a wee bit too firm for me, although the bar is a bit pricey, there are no problems with consuming stuff you have bought outside, we actually saw someone bringing a boxed pizza in!
If we visit Nerja in the future we would not hesitate to stay at The Parador again.
Ps Wi Fi throughout & there is a computer for the public to use in one of the lounges.

Room Tip: South facing rooms have lawn, pool& sea views. East facing have lawn, town & mountain views...

Hi,
Myself and my mother were attending a wedding in Nerja in June 2012. We made 2 separate reservations. One for 2 peope from june 15 to 19 with breakfast..i had to return home to work...the second reservation was from 19 jun to 22 june for mother alone..half board....the 2 reservatons came to about 1050. euros. mother checked out without checking bill...(i was not there)....at home she went thru bill..it was for 1300 odd euro..they did not honour their own confirmed reservations,,,i have been emaiing back and forth for about 1 week..and getting no satisfactory response...they charged for food even tho 2nd reservaton was half-board per confirmed reservation...also they are trying to claim 2 people stayed for last 3 nights...!!! when i had returned home..thats why we made 2 different reservations...!! ...has left sour taste..hotel has shown .no urgency in returning approx 250 euros we are owed...very disappointed with attitude of 4 star hotel......as regards the hotel itself..had a great week here...lovely hotel..great location..great facilities..great views..great breakfast..but since returning this issue has overshadowed week here...and not inclined to ever use Parador Hotels ever again...Holiday makers..beware..check bill before leaving!

Just back from a trip to spain, having driven for 5 hours to get to above,we arrived rather shattered!,having been here a few times,we knew what to expect!built in the 1960,s it has weathered well,it is not your traditional parador, more modern,do take a room with a terrace over the restaurant, fab views.rooms clean and tidy, maid service/room service vg,a lot better then some 5 star hotels, ate lunch ,also dinner, and had room service which arrived hot ,clean and full compliment of everything you needed!lovely grounds with big "umbrus" trees to sit under, plenty of loungers and lift to the beach, very suitable for buggies and wheel chairs etc.we found the staff much more pleasant this time round, public areas "airy",laptop for use etc.€ 177.00per room per night inc breakfast.would /will be back, our family have been thereover the years and enjoy it to chill out.not for nightclubbers.

Room Tip: get a terrace.

How do you like your eggs in the morning?

According to many fellow reviewers that would be hot! There certainly seems quite the debate rumbling and I can confirm that there were fried eggs for breaky and yes, they weren’t always that hot. Suffice it to say, I managed just fine with them and was not out with my egg timer verifying how long replenishments occurred.

In fact, while on the subject, there was the usual vast breakfast spread with tons to choose from (including freshly squeezed sweet Spanish Oranges and a pretty decent Seranno Ham). Worthy of note is the stunning location looking onto the pool area and out across the sea and mountains, oh what heavenly mornings we had!

Nerja is simply one of my favourite places. It’s stunning location, vibrant town with fabulous restaurants, fresh grilled fish and great tapas bars (where just two small beers gets you a surprise and very free tapa with each order) makes for the perfect combination and everything I want in a holiday. However, Nerja is not perfect and its lack of a sewage treatment plant (repeated it seems along the entire coast) is probably the cause of the horrible slimy sludgy slick that wafts up to the shoreline most days. Last year in early July, jelly fish were an additional problem which is precisely why I love this hotel so much as you can bask away in the pool without ever having to worry about what kind of a day the sea is having. But do note, the pool is only open “during peak summer months” and an autumn dip on that stubbornly warm day will most likely be out of the question.

The Parador is perfectly situated in Nerja with the lift taking you down in seconds to beach life Burianna style and just a short walk from the front of the hotel (7 to 10 mins) brings you to the town centre. So, not only is the Parador right beside all the good stuff, the setting is simply stunning (check everyone’s photos if you don’t believe me).

We stayed in mid June this time and noticed on the weekend days the hotel was crawling with toddlers and babies (some of which lived up to their moany reputation) but week days far less so. This is obviously before the school hols for all Europeans and so not sure if the grounds and pool would be overrun with children having a wonderful time had this been later in the season. Having said this, there is so much space around the pool you never feel over crowded (even with the hotel being fully booked) and you can always find another chair in a different section if you really do have a particularly disruptive neighbour that is driving you round the bend. However, I did notice as picked up by another reviewer, that there were a number of people playing the “early morning/4 hour lunch” towel on sun lounger game, somewhat unnecessarily and a tad selfishly considering the lengths of absence involved.

What could be improved?
1. As mentioned by many before me, rooms need modernising but still spacious, practical and reasonably comfortable
2. Beds and pillows could be softer and more comfortable considering price

Why is it that I can’t wait until I return?
1. Perfectly located in one of my favourite places
2. Pool set within beautiful and spacious gardens
3. Pool itself is large (only hotel nearby with anything approaching a decent sized pool)
4. Helpful nice staff
5. Beautiful sea and mountain views from rooms and balconies.
6. Breakfast until 11 and 12 noon check out were a big plus

This is a good hotel, don't get me wrong but good staff and nice gardens do not a parador make.

The lift to Burriana beach is a big plus. And though the gardens are nice, it is hard to see why you would stay in their 'library like' ambience when the Mediterranean is calling. Beware, early morning sun lounger towel games are rife in the parador!

The rooms were fine, think Holiday Inn and you just about imagine them. Compared with El Saler or Alcala de Henares: well there is just no comparison.

Breakfast is functional, if unspectacular and the staff work hard to make it all work.

Would I use it again? Nah.....there is better and cheaper.

Myself, my husband and 2 year old child arrived in Nerja with nowhere booked to stay. We sometimes do this as it adds a bit of adventure to our holidays. Having tried a couple of hotels we then arrived at the Parador de Nerja. It was nearly 7pm when we arrived and I asked the receiptionist would she have a room for us for one night but our stay may extend to 5 nights. She said that she had a room for us all at a cost of €209 bed and breakfast. I took it but asked her had she anything cheaper- there wasnt anything available. I thought that at that cost it would have to really nice..... it was away below par for a 4 star hotel. There are pictures on the wall towards the gloomy dinning room of when the hotel opened in 1972.... and im really honest in saying that NOTHING as been done since to the hotel. The gardens have matured... thats about it. The bedroom was 1970's with dark green beed cover and old type ancient brown tiles on the floor. The woodwork was painted a dark dreary red/brown colour. It was miserable and I would never ever stay there again. The receptionist and the staff were all grumpy and miserable also. When I checked the price of the hotel online it was cheaper. I mentioned this to the male receptionist when we were checking out but he said he didnt understand me.....!!! NEVER AGAIN. Dont go to this hotel if you in anyway living in the 20th century....
