We have just returned from a one week stay at The Parador (travelled with Cricketer Holidays) it was our first visit to Nerja & I'm sure we will go back. Nerja is very attractive, low rise, whitewashed, bougainvillea spilling over walls, pretty tiled walls & courtyards abound.
The hotel is extremely relaxing, it is a little dated, but none the worse for this. The chap on reception when we arrived did not make a good impression on us, he was not welcoming and broke off to look for someone's Daily Telegraph, leaving us hanging around with no apology or explanation, we had an "oooer" moment, however, all the other staff were friendly and helpful & service was excellent.
Our room overlooking the pool with sea beyond, was very comfortable. Large with lots of storage & hanging space, cool tiled floor, large balcony with comfortable cushioned covers on plastic chairs, light that was bright enough to read by later at night. There is a fridge hidden in the cupboard under the large TV, we removed the contents & filled it up with our own water, beer, olives etc.
The bathroom (with separate loo &bidet) is not large, but big enough, two sinks, bath with good shower over & shower screen, plenty of towels for bathing & swimming. Everywhere is spotlessly clean.
There is no kettle or dring making stuff, this was not important to us, but you might want to bring your travel kettle.
Breakfast is a wonderful affair taken indoors or on the outdoor terrace, we have only stayed in one other place which offered such a sumptuous selection (see other review). We never managed lunch anywhere as breakfast kept us going all day. Selection of fresh juices, lovely freshly squeezed orange juice, it's in both a jug & a refrigerated dispenser thing (don't assume it is some inferior squashy mix!) Kellogg cereals, various yoghurts, selection of prepared fruit; melons, pink grapefruit, kiwis, grapes, cherries, dried fruits & poached pears, peaches & more. Rolls & local breads, hams, cheeses, jams, honey, marmalade, plus flans, buns, donuts & then the cooked range.....didn't try anything from here, but it looked attractive. We've had buffet breakfast before offering a similar choice, the difference at Parador is the superb quality. Coffee is good, however the tea is dire & I don't like strong tea!
The grounds are beautiful & immaculate, the trees offer lots of shade, there are plenty of loungers, although there is a fair bit of lounger hogging/marking with towels. In June this was not as issue, there were plenty of other loungers to choose from, but it could be an issue in July/Aug. The pool is lovely and large with a seriously deep end, although there is no spring board (??H&S!), the only gripe being the pool bar which serves drinks & icecreams is only open 12-2, management need to address this. I went to reception to ask if there was anywhere else I could get an ice cream, they opened the bar to sell me one, several others cottoned on to this & suddenly there was a queue at the side door to the bar!!
The lower lawned area overlooks the beach, there is a lift down to the beach, however they lock the lift gate at beach level at 11pm even during fiestas, we got caught out & had to make the steep hairpin walk back! If you want to use the beach there are two areas given over to loungers & umbrellas, these have nothing to do with the hotel though & they do look a bit regimented. You can buy umbrellas & beachy stuff in the local shops, but you might want to bring your own, the hotel has no facils on the beach.
The air con could do with improving, it was adequate once it got going, but in June we were running it all night on max, the beds are a wee bit too firm for me, although the bar is a bit pricey, there are no problems with consuming stuff you have bought outside, we actually saw someone bringing a boxed pizza in!
If we visit Nerja in the future we would not hesitate to stay at The Parador again.
Ps Wi Fi throughout & there is a computer for the public to use in one of the lounges.
