Love, love, love the Balcon and Nerja.

If you want to visit Spain, and experience a proper Spanish break, then this is where to go. We're not big fans of going abroad only to go to a "British" pub\restaurant, we like to experience local food and entertainment. We have been going to the Balcon since 2006 and after a break of a couple of years to have our son C, we returned this year with our three year old.

We were worried as it's not exactly a family hotel, but we had a fantastic time. Everyone, staff and guests, made a huge fuss of C.

The location of the hotel is the what makes it unique, you're in the heart of old town, directly on the beach. The views are stunning, and nothing beats enjoying a drink in the evening on your balcony.

One tip - go B&B, as there are amazing places to eat nearby.

Room Tip: Any room is great. You enter the hotel on the sixth floor, there is a roof top pool on the fifth an...

We have been staying at this hotel since 1999 and have always been very happy with welcome, level of service, cleanliness and food. The main attraction of course is the position; the hotel is right on the beach but with direct access to the "Balcon de Europa" at the other side. We always book a Junior Suite, which ensures a good sea view at the quieter side of the hotel. The rooms are becoming rather tired, but are being updated now. Ours had not been done but the friends that we went with had a renovated one, although not a Junior Suite which was very nice. We stay on a bed and breakfast basis and always enjoy the very varied choice of food at breakfast, some English options, but also many traditional Spanish dishes too which is great. It is hard to imagine a breakfast room with better views anywhere in the world. There are so many restaurants in Nerja that you can eat at a different place each night, which we enjoy. However, at lunchtime we invariably eat at the Nautica bar, right beside the beach. A variety of light meals, snacks and full blown lunches are served in an idyllic setting. This year we went in October, when the room rates were cheaper and we did not have to pay for sunbeds, as you do in summer. A saving of 8E per day! Most of the staff at the hotel have been there for a long time, which says something about the management. Service in all the bars is impeccable; professional but friendly, and returning guests are treated as old friends. Another wonderful holiday and we will be back next year.

Room Tip: Junior suites are in the best location, ask for one on floor 3 or 4. Standard sea view rooms can be...

It makes me sick when you hear and read the reports on the balcon de europe,we have been going to this hotel for a long time, the staff are great, the food is great the head chef Mario can't do enough for you if don't like eggs he will do you any thing you like, you are in Spain not the UK.You are paying for the view, you don't live in your room you only sleep there ,the staff are just great.People are always ready to complain but never take the time to say something nice,I heard the other day this women complain that the waves where too noisey?Anyway if you want great service go to this hotel. We meet the same people from all over the UK every year and that's about 10 couples and people on there own, that should be telling you how great and safe Nerja and the Balcon De Europa are. My name is Father Christmas to those who know me.

Room Tip: always book a sea view facing the sea

We have just returned from 2 weeks at the Balcon De Europa Hotel Jerja which was really wonderful. The staff were friendly and very helpful, the food was excellent and the room large and very clean. We were a little apprehensive after reading the reviews but had no problems. We will hopefully return sometime in the future.

Room Tip: Go for a higher-up room, we were on the 9th floor, with a balcony

Just back from a long awaited week at the Balcon. Quite delightful. We had a Junior suite on the lowest floor - occasional sardine smell from the grill below, but wonderful views of the breakers rolling in. Best to avoid the evening meal as there are indeed plenty of very good and varied places to eat within a stroll. Breakfast was excellent - I don't think they missed out on anything, even bottles of Cava for a swift bucks fizz to get you going! The pool is tiny, but those sunbeds are free and there's a good breeze on the roof. Free beach towels, changed as often as you want. Totally up to expectation although if you are a bit less fit, be aware that as the area is pedestrianised there is a walk to the transport to and from the airport.

Room Tip: Go for as good as you can afford - the views are well worth it

My husband and I turned up here about 10.00pm one night with just a carrier bag. We had been looking at houses and on the road back to where we were staying but just got completely overwhelmed by tiredness. We decided to see if we could get in - we had noticed it on an earlier visit. The reception staff were delightful - joking with us that they had to keep a room in case the King of Spain decided to visit but as it looked as if he were not coming, we could have his room. Actually, it was a suite, with a huge balcony overlooking the sea which they gave us for the price of an ordinary double. We slept the sleep of the dead and woke to the sound of the waves crashing on the beach below. We had breakfast in our room on the terrace. It was just the most wonderful experience. Never stayed there since - but would recommend it.

Room Tip: Ask for the King of Spain's room.

Just returned from this hotel stayed there 11th to 25th Sept with my friend. We booked a standard room and when we checked in and were shown to our room which was beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean if a little narrow; however on opening curtains we found ourselves looking out at a very hugh blank white wall, OK; so it did have plants and flowers etc at ground level, but on waking each morning it was impossible to tell what the weather was like because of this high wall, absolutely nowhere to put any little bits of laundry (and I assure you we are not people to drape our smalls over balconies....even if we had one), we asked about changing to another room, and our Rep told us we could update at a price; but no rooms with balconies were available. Other annoyances were; the charge for sunbeds on the beach; even though we had been told there were no charges for these; if you did use the sun terrace there was no charge, but this was really cramped and once again the pool was tiny. Also no tea making facilities; and as with other comments; I feel the travel agents should inform clients that when one arrives in Nerja, you are dropped by coach at the Hotel Riu Monica and then collected by the Balcon's courtesy bus as the Balcon is pedestrianised and not accessible by coach. however the courtesy coach driver was excellent and couldn't be more helpful. Nerja itself is absolutely beautiful, with meandering streets and excellent shops, restaurants and bars. If you are booking I think B&B would be far better than half board, as the dinners were repetitive, however they operate a buffet service on Thursdays and Sundays and this was excellent. The location is excellent, but personally I would be slow to return to the Balcon, because I feel the distinct lack of balconies on lots of rooms is a drawback. Certainly not a cheap holiday and as four stars go, should be much better.

Room Tip: Please be sure and ask your travel agent about where your room is situated and if it has a view as s...
