Hotel Balcon de Europa
Ranked #6 of 37 Hotels in Nerja
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 20 July 2009

We recently took a trip to the Costa Del Sol with Nerja included as one of our stops. We booked into the Balcon as it came highly recommended.....not so sure.
When we arrived to Nerja the street signage to be fair directed us to what we thought was the hotel, however it was an underground car park in the middle of a pile of rubble.
We did not know quite what to do so I approached the attendant on duty who grunted at me, having no Spanish I tried to explain that I needed to check in and again the response was a grunt. After about half an hour the butler arrived to take us to our palace....I don't think so.
On arrival having walked through the Balcon with our 'butler' we were told our room would be an hour, so we had a very pleasant lunch in the hotel which was reasonably priced.
Alas - our room was ready - having been told that the baggage handler was very busy we carried our own bags to our room, you could not swing a cat in the box that they gave us - so straight on to reception we dialled.
After much conversation we were eventually moved to what could be described as a mediocre room with a great balcony overlooking the sea. Clean yes, old yes, grotty and in need of an update yes. Having tried numerous times to work out the safe, I once again called reception, my key card needed to be validated at a charge of €2 per day.....disgrace. Not only this, if you wanted to use the mini bar there was once again a daily supplement.....I was that annoyed I didn’t even bother to ask.
When we got down to the hotel's private beach we took to our sun lounger after our ordeal.......€7 please! We had to pay for our sun beds.....another disgrace.
Breakfast was reasonable, however get there before 11 or else the Gestapo will kick you out.....without any apologies.
We decided to have lunch in the hotel's restaurant, two wonderful salads served with Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar, only issue was the Olive Oil came complete with numerous Fly remains floating within for added flavour. When we brought this to the attention of our waiter, he responded with the all too familiar 'Balcon De Europa Grunt' and then we asked his manager to come over to us. He simply shrugged his shoulder, blamed it on the weather and simply said to us – ‘no pay, fine, no pay’ – not even an apology. Ignorance beyond belief!
Our 5 night stay ended with the real cherry on the cake, we asked for our car parking ticket to be validated, we once again got the 'BDE Grunt' – it was then explained to us that they had no parking....although their butler collected us from what we thought was their car park. Whilst it is clearly sign posted, it’s not theirs at all, theirs is under construction.....god knows where. This pleasure was €18 PER DAY! Oh – don’t try and use the vending machine on the 5th floor – not only is it circa €3 for a bottle of water....it doesn’t vend!!
In summary, nicely located hotel, great views, loads of hidden extra charges with no warning and service that you might expect in a prison.

Just back from holiday week at this hotel. Took bus from Malaga airport and changed at Malaga bus station for Nerja. Truly painless process which cost 5Euros each as opposed to 80Euros for taxi. Approx 11/2 hours later we arrived Nerja. Porter took luggage on arrival at hotel and swift allocation of sea-facing room on first floor - absolutely superb view. Room itself was spotless and furnished in a 'classic' Spanish style. Clealiness of room was maintained throughout stay.
Breakfast on the 4th floor was a joy, with good quality orange juice and nice coffee - can't take this for granted in Spain. Reasonable selection of cooked items - eggs, bacon, sausage and a good choice of breads, buns and croissants.
Hotel is fantastically located and walking distance to a host of restaurants and bars.
Special mention to restaurant Sabore de amore at Burriana beach, where the proprietor prepared for us a delicious Thai lunch - mouth watering as I write!
Only niggle at hotel was having to pay 3.5Euros per day for sunbed. This encouraged the 'towels on bed brigade' to put towels out at 8am to get their money's worth. For us to pay for 1-2 hours was nonsense.
All in all though a great holiday.

Just completed a stay for 2 nights at Balcon de Europa. Had a beautiful room with a view of the Sea. I believe they called it a JR Suite, but it just seemed like a large room to me. The breakfast buffet is huge and very nice. The access to the beach is wonderful, and the location is within walking distance to everything in Nerja. Definitely more of a touristy spot, full of Brits, not really local charm. For restaurants definitely head up the street a ways, the further from the sea, the more local.

This hotel was tatty, tired and rundown. Staff were abrupt and clearly didn't want to work there. The rooms were awful and the bathrooms were incredibly tiny and had no ventilation meaning that the whole room smelled damp and musty.
Bedroom furniture was falling apart and the whole room looked like something out of the seventies. Bed was so uncomftanle and small that we got little sleep.
Breakfast was very good and the only thing that made the place bearable.
Be prepared to be charged a lot of money to stay in a premier hotel which is way past its peak.
Do not recommend it at all.

We received a warm welcome upon our arrival and were shown to a room on the 5th floor with balcony and sea view. The room was in our opinion ideally situated near to the lift and the pool, one floor below reception and one floor above the dining room. The room was very basic but spotlessly clean with reasonable facilities excepting tea and coffee. The beds were very comfortable. The pool and sunbed area is small but adequate but we were there during half term and there were too many children for such a small space. The beach was beautiful and the hotel beach restaurant was excellent and we ate there most lunch times. The main restaurant had stunning sea views. We only had dinner in the hotel once and not from the set price menu that comes with half board as we found it uninspiring but the paella we chose was good. Contrary to most of the other reviews we found the breakfast disapointing - there was a very poor selection of fresh fruit but the rest of it was ok. The rooms could do with upgrading but  if not done carefully it could take away the nostalgic charm of the hotel. If we were returning to Nerja we would definintely stay here again.

rooms: roomy, simple, in severe need of updating- 80's style and cheap interior ( for the price you pay for the room this is a disappointment), old squeaky uncomfortable beds, gross comforter covers, old, cheap & fake wood furntiure, plastic chairs on the balcony. we liked the balcony that faced the ocean, room was clean, great water pressure in the shower, came with toiletries, had the weirdest looking hair dryer I have ever seen that did not work well

staff: had to call them to come up and fix our safety lock box and also to get the password for the wifi internet service- took them 40minutes to 1hr for them to arrive to our room to assist us. we had plans but were stuck waiting for them to arrive. appreciated that someone helped us to our room with our bags when we arrived. they were also helpful in helping us figure out the best way to get to Granada to see the Alhambra- we took a bus. nice staff for the most part. my friend forgot her toothbrush, they brought up a free one for her to our room which we really appreciated.

location: awesome, loved the beach, you can easliy swim, sun bath, and relax, be careful not stay out after the beach closes (6pm) ( it didn't start to get dark until after 9pm), they lock all the doors and stop the elevator from coming down to that level. you will end up having to completely walk around and up the cliff side stairs to get back to the hotel.

beach- the sand is not the softest and gets really hot, so wear your flip flops at all times. sun beds must be claimed first thing in the morning and there is a charge. there were lots of kids; several women sun bathing with their swim suit tops off

beach bar: doesn't make any slushy drinks....yes thats right no pina colodas or slushy maragritas..they said they don't have a blender. I thought this was pretty wierd for as hot as gets outside and it being on the beach.

extra charges: sun chairs- 3.50 euros per day, wifi internet service is 2 euros per day and has a maximum number of people that can be using it at a time, so you may pay for it and never get a chance to use it, the safety box is 2euros to use, they lock the fridge and charge 2 euros to unlock it, even if you are just storing your own items in the fridge (my friend was really annoyed by this feature). keep your beach towel card they give you when you check in; you will need it to give to the beach towel boy to claim your towels or you will have to pay for the towel rentals. when you return your towels before you check out of the hotel, the towel boy will give you back the card to give to the reception desk when you check out to avoid charges.

the pool- a joke, it is smaller than most home backyard pools, but saw (about 10) people crowding around it and relaxing. the hotel would do themselves a big favor if they built a giant pool to accomodate all the hotel guests

package deal- breakfast was included- loved it- really good selection and the breakfast restaraunt faces the beach/ocean so you have a really beautiful view.
