After a few days sightseeing in Rome we decided to go to Nerja for a few days rest and relaxation. We read the many glowing reviews on trip advisor (perfection, paradise, excellent hotel …. ) then booked the penthouse suite for 6 nights. What a disappointment. The difference between what we expected and what we found was almost surreal. The hotel is simply nowhere near as good as the numerous other reviews led us to believe and, in hindsight, some of the comments seem almost laughable. Let me try to be analytical ….
The positives …. the staff were cheerful and helpful. The weather was fabulous (sunny, blue skies, not too hot). The hotel is superbly positioned overlooking the beach with direct access. Breakfast outdoors on the patio is delightful. The gardens are laid out on various levels so there’s always a spot to sun bathe in peace and quiet. The town is 5 minutes walk away.
The negatives …. while the penthouse has large floor to ceiling windows which offer wonderful panoramic views the sliding doors don’t close properly leaving a gap of about 3cm which is wide enough to be able to open the windows from outside and leaves you feeling vulnerable. The bathroom next to the bedroom had a bad sewer odour so we kept the door closed and the window open to try to limit the smell. The cheap hair dryer in the bathroom was broken then fixed with black duct tape. The sun loungers on the penthouse veranda are dirty and while birds must be a continual problem the ingrained dirt on one of the loungers suggests it hasn’t been cleaned for months. The beds in the penthouse are only made up every 3 days (though nothing was mentioned in any of the literature that this was other than a full service hotel). And finally, at breakfast on the final day, we found a small (1 centimetre long) grub like insect feasting on a slice of bread, which was truly stomach churning.
In summary …. if you're expecting a slightly tired, overpriced b&b with gorgeous views, direct access to the beach and plenty of quiet spots to sun bathe in peace and quiet, you'll be happy. If you're expecting some sort of 2/3 star "boutique" hotel experience, I doubt you’ll find it at the Paraiso Del Mar and you definitely won’t find it in the penthouse suite. We came away feeling very disappointed.
