“tired, overpriced b&b”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

After a few days sightseeing in Rome we decided to go to Nerja for a few days rest and relaxation. We read the many glowing reviews on trip advisor (perfection, paradise, excellent hotel …. ) then booked the penthouse suite for 6 nights. What a disappointment. The difference between what we expected and what we found was almost surreal. The hotel is simply nowhere near as good as the numerous other reviews led us to believe and, in hindsight, some of the comments seem almost laughable. Let me try to be analytical ….

The positives …. the staff were cheerful and helpful. The weather was fabulous (sunny, blue skies, not too hot). The hotel is superbly positioned overlooking the beach with direct access. Breakfast outdoors on the patio is delightful. The gardens are laid out on various levels so there’s always a spot to sun bathe in peace and quiet. The town is 5 minutes walk away.

The negatives …. while the penthouse has large floor to ceiling windows which offer wonderful panoramic views the sliding doors don’t close properly leaving a gap of about 3cm which is wide enough to be able to open the windows from outside and leaves you feeling vulnerable. The bathroom next to the bedroom had a bad sewer odour so we kept the door closed and the window open to try to limit the smell. The cheap hair dryer in the bathroom was broken then fixed with black duct tape. The sun loungers on the penthouse veranda are dirty and while birds must be a continual problem the ingrained dirt on one of the loungers suggests it hasn’t been cleaned for months. The beds in the penthouse are only made up every 3 days (though nothing was mentioned in any of the literature that this was other than a full service hotel). And finally, at breakfast on the final day, we found a small (1 centimetre long) grub like insect feasting on a slice of bread, which was truly stomach churning.

In summary …. if you're expecting a slightly tired, overpriced b&b with gorgeous views, direct access to the beach and plenty of quiet spots to sun bathe in peace and quiet, you'll be happy. If you're expecting some sort of 2/3 star "boutique" hotel experience, I doubt you’ll find it at the Paraiso Del Mar and you definitely won’t find it in the penthouse suite. We came away feeling very disappointed.

What a fabulous place. The setting is superb , staff is lovely, decorations and all feel like you entered a 50's glamorous time warp , and there are cascading terraces to the sea. Please pay a bit more for a sea view room. A perfect "timeout" of 3 days in the middle of 15 all over Spain, and we left feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

Room Tip: 201 had a great view, private feeling, covered balcony.

This was our second visit to this hotel. Enrique made us feel like we were special guests in his villa. Everything is spotlessly clean. We stayed in room 105 which is a library. My husband and I had a room with a door between the salon. They brought in extra beds to the salon for our daughters and a 3rd bed in a separate reading room for my mother in law. We had ample space and for 5 people it was an excellent price. If you are a family I would suggest calling or emailing the hotel as this option was not online. The hotel staff speak English very well and I observed that they also had no trouble with French and German as well. The breakfast is fabulous and everything tastes even better sitting amongst the flowers with an amazing view of the sea.
There are about 100 steps down to the ocean which was fine for us. If you are less for there are chairs to rest on if you need a break.
Will definitely return!

What a great place, beautifully located, very friendly staff. Take one of the rooms with sea view, it is worth the little extra money....
Great breakfast. There are many hidden terraces and you can always find a spot for yourself. Only 17 rooms, so never very crowded.

We booked two rooms arriving mid afternoon and stayed one night. The owner/manager, Enrique Caro Bernal met us as though we were old friends speaking Spanish and English fluently with us. During our stay we observed that he was also able to converse with guests in German and Italian. He is a sincere asset. The rooms are comfortable with large bathrooms though each room appears to be different and some suites are newer construction than the original house. We had a view of the sea from a small balcony at the corner of our room. The other room was on the front of the house and had an adjoining bedroom for the children which was ideal for a family. We found the art collection in the hotel of particular interest and Mr. Bernal was kind enough to give us a personal tour of his collection which hangs in the hallways, dining room and in some of the newer suites. The breakfast was substantial and we enjoyed it on an outer deck where the view was spectacular. Gardens are lovely. Location is great with lookout over the Mediterranean, stairway down to the beach and a short walk out the front door to interesting shopping. We definitely would return for a longer visit.

Room Tip: Our room had twin beds. We would have preferred one larger bed but we booked on very short notice a...
