We stayed for a week on our anniversary . Although we booked a room with a limited sea view we were given a sea view one. However it was in -2 floor. We asked to change it and were given a room on the sixth floor. The air condition system was switched off and it was uncomfortably warm at night in the room where there was no fan.
The hotel provides excellent buffets for breakfast and dinner with huge and varied dishes both cold and warm and some of them are freshly cooked in front of you. When there was no vegetarian soup we were served one at the table.
Please not that the beach is public and you need to hire sun lounger for €4 a day.
The massage department was a disappointment as the member of staff needed to be told what to do. You need to pay cash when you finish the treatment . For€75 it wasn't good value for money.
The room was clean and spacious however the air condition system was switched off at night making the room uncomfortable at night especially in the rooms with no ceiling fan.
Room for improvement :
1.to provide tea making facility in the rooms.
2.To provide more varied vegetarian options and let the guests choose.
3. To leave to the guest to control the room temperature instead of switching off the system leaving the room thermostat useless.
4. To improve the quality and service at the massage department ( I don't know whether it is franchised as they demand payment in cash )
Notwithstanding all the above Monica hotel remains a good quality hotel that provides a relaxing a
holiday in pleasant surroundings with friendly and attentive service.

Room Tip: Higher floors are more private even with limited sea view.

A return visit to the Monica did not disappoint Food, Staff and Hotel all deserve their 4star rating .We stayed late October but the hotel was very much on its toes unlike some hotels at this time of year feeling tired ,apart from a small section of the restaurant being unavailable for breakfast (which caused no problems) it was running at full swing

We stayed at the Rio Monica for ten days from 15th of October 2013. and could not really find any fault with this Hotel having read some previous reviews which were mixed.
We opted for the 6.30 pm dinner apart from two nights when we asked for the later sitting which was no problem at all. The food was very good and varied and was always fresh and yes the tables are close together but this was never a problem.
We had a room on the 5th floor with pleasant views over the sea and town and thought the room was nice and clean and tidy.
The weather in Nerja was very warm and Nerja itself is delightful.

Room Tip: Try for high rooms for sea views

Tad late writing this as we stayed at the Monica at the end of September.
The hotel was fine, excellent room with sea view , very clean, food good with plenty of choice. There was entertainment on every night, which even though we did not see much, was good. As always, you will get people who like or dislike, the management go for overall appeal.
All the staff from the management to the cleaners where pleasant and helpful.
Gardens and pool area clean and well kept, plenty of sun beds, also lovely and peaceful.
This end of Nerja very nice, also the old town and "balcon" lovely to walk around.
Nerja is very different from the other costa resorts, not as built up, and as such makes it a lot more pleasant.
P.S Do go across the road to the "Ship" and try the Chinese restaurant, it's not bad.

Stayed here for 10 nights half board, only ate in 3 times as the food is ok but very much the same each night. Breakfast was ok but finding a cockroach walking on the bread was a little off putting. The director was very disinterested and rude when this was reported. The hotel, however is ideal location a short walk into town and straight onto the beach. The hotel itself was clean but very tired and needs a good face lift. The beds are very hard we like a firm bed but this is super firm. The compromise was a couple of blankets on top of the mattress to try and soften it up. A tip don't stay on the west side of the hotel as if you need your door open all you will hear is a dog barking until early hours. The air conditioning unit is not really affective so the door was needed to be open. Tip take a hair dryer yes there is one in the room but it is useless. Most of the reception staff are very helpful. Our overall stay was average, not sure whether its worth a four star rating as it really does need a lot of work doing to it. Hope this helps when you come to booking your stay
