“WONDERFUL HOLIDAY”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 March 2014 via mobile

just returned from a great holiday at this hotel. We had room 720 which boasted the most unbelievable views. The accommodation was excellent, spotlessly clean and very friendly staff. I loved the food with plenty of choice each day. It's in a terrific position, only a 10 minute walk to the old town of Nerja. Ayo's restaurant on burrianas beach nerja is about a 30 minute walk away but worth every step. I would definitely use the riu monica again but a word of advice. If you want wifi, use the public areas and don't pay €25 for access in your room. We paid the €25 but only managed to get the very very odd connection. It was very frustrating as it was essential for my partners work. I even had one of the desk staff come to outside our room to see it took a good 10 minutes to log on and then it would log you out within minutes but to no avail. I was told they would consider refunding the money but nothing came of it. That was the only disappointment of the stay. €25 euros completely wasted. You could go from the 7th floor to the lobby, log on and read your emails quicker than logging on in your room. Apart from that, we had a great holiday and would recommend the accommodation and position wholeheartedly.

My husband and myself have just come back from a weeks holiday at the riu Monica & I have to say everything about this hotel is fantastic. We couldn't believe the wonderful breakfast hot & cold and evening dinner was also excellent boiled potatoes not just chips! The rooms were clean & the public areas very well kept. The staff couldn't have been more helpful & Rory our thomson rep was great. All in all a great holiday. But I also need to mention cafe Jamaica opposite the hotel their food is fresh and tasty and their prices can't be beat give them visit.

Still on holiday in the hotel Riu Monica. Only been here a couple of days but having a lovely time. The hotel is excellent. The staff are very friendly and helpful, thy cant do enough for you. We had champagne on arrival which was a lovely touch . Our room is spacious , clean and beds comfortable . Only downside is that here are no tea making facilities , kettle etc . So maybe better to have a kettle than a mini bar! The food quite good , breakfast and most of the evening buffet varied and tasty . Didn't think the hot buffet was so good . Nerja itself is very pretty plenty of restaurants, quite a few souvineer shops and beautiful views . Would definitely recommend this hotel and Nerja .

Have just returned from an eleven day holiday at Riu Monica, Nerja.
The Hotel is situated very close to the beach, the staff are so friendly, polite and at all times professional in their duties.
Our room on the fifth floor facing east enabled us to enjoy an amazing sunrise each morning. The room was large, with plenty of storage space, comfortable, kept very clean and tidy with attention to small detail by our maid Carmen.
The restaurant has two sittings for dinner 6pm. & 7.45pm. With great views over the sea and garden, The food was enjoyable with a varied choice to suit all tastes.
All public areas, swimming pools, gym etc. at all times are kept spotlessly clean and although I believe the hotel was fully booked, at no time was there a feeling of overcrowding.
We enjoyed our stay very much and hope to return.
Nerja is a charming and interesting resort, always much to see and do around the area.
Two small niggles, please Monica, offer guests a pillow menu, the only pillows available are uncomfortable. Also provide mattresses for the sun beds - again not comfortable.

This was a return visit, having stayed here about 15 years ago. Apart from some parts of the hotel looking a bit dated but nothing has really changed. Starting with well organised welcome and moving on to the great service and lovely clean and comfy room. We were allocated a ground floor room but asked for one on a higher floor. We were moved immediately, despite the hotel being almost full. The food, especially the breakfast was absolutely first class.
Special mention for Ship bar opposite the hotel. Run by a dutch couple, you get a great atmosphere, a warm welcome, and great prices.
Still no trains from Nerja but there is a good cheap express coach to Malaga. Well worth a visit
Plenty of good restaurants available within a 5 minute walk from Riu Monica if you are on B and B and the prices are good compared to the rest of Europe.

Regular guests will be delighted to know that the planned closure for refurbishment between 1st November 2014 and 1st March 2015 has been postponed by Riu senior management!
Having a lovely holiday in our favourite hotel. There was a problem with a constantly barking dog though. It barked all day and then barked all night. Guests were unable to sleep. Hotel management were at a loss what to do but luckily Terry from Torbay had the commonsense to speak directly to the owner who didn't appreciate how much disruption the noise was making. Since then the problem has disappeared. Pat on the back Terry.
Great hotel, great staff, great location, give it a try.

Room Tip: West facing for superb sunsets.

Hotel position: The hotel is about 45 to 60 minutes from the airport and is sited on the beach near the centre of Nerja. There are a large number of cafes and restaurants nearby along with a few small supermarkets. It is about a 10 to 15 minute walk to Balcon de Europa. You can access the beach via a gate near the hotel pool and pool café.
Pool: The pool was far too cold for a swim when we visited in February but the area itself is large with plenty of sunbeds and small attractive gardens. The pool café is very nice offering a limited but well put together menu.
Sunbeds: The sunbeds seemed old and made of cheap white plastic. Some are broken in that the head section will not set at various levels and the material is sagging in places.
Hotel public areas: Large and old in style. There are very friendly and helpful staff on the reception and in the bar area. The bar prices seemed reasonable and the waiter service was first class.
Restaurant: The hotel has two sittings for dinner. We tried the six o’clock sitting for a few days but found this too early. The eight o’clock sitting was much better. There was no difference in the quality or the quantity of the food at either sitting. The food is very good offering a wide selection of salads and hot choices. The desserts including ice creams, cakes and cheeses were all wonderful. It is all buffet so you can eat what you like. I had wine in the restaurant; all the Rioja I drank was excellent.
Our room: The rooms are old but very clean. They could do with an update, the TV was very old but the beds are comfy. Our room had a mini bar (which we did not use) and a limited sea view. The balcony was small and private. Wardrobe and draw space is good with lots of clothes hangers available. The room size is reasonable but we have been in bigger and better appointed Riu rooms in the past.
Staff: I don’t have a bad word to say about the staff at this hotel. Everyone we met was pleasant and very helpful. They were always polite and tried hard to address any concerns and needs we had.
Nerja: We walked a lot in Nerja, it is a pleasant tourist destination. There are plenty of gift shops mixed in with high class fashion retailers. The old part of the town is very pretty. We did not eat out so cannot comment on the local cuisine. There are a number of burger joints and small bars alongside what looked like themed Spanish and Italian restaurants. I am sure that Nerja can cater for most tastes.
Overall: We enjoyed our visit to this hotel. It was out of season so everything would have been less pressured than what you might expect in the summer. That said for the time of year we visited it was an extremely pleasant holiday at a great hotel.
