We arrived on Tuesday after Easter for ten days - the weather was wonderful and the hotel provided us with excellent service. The rooms are spacious with plenty of storage and a secluded balcony on the sixth floor. The staff are great at this hotel, the room cleaning is spot on and the hotel even arranged for us to have ours cleaned by mid-day - the food is good considering it is a buffet style restaurant with plenty of choice and quantity. The grounds are lovely although I do not think that it is that suitable for children as the pool is not large and part of the grounds are gardens. We had been to the hotel seven years ago but, will not leave it so long to return - the other benefit is the super town of Nerja - so plenty to do

Room Tip: We thought that our room on the sixth floor was excellent with views over the sea and towards the to...

A stay over Easter with 2 children, this hotel provided us with a good standard of accommodation, enjoyable food and a relaxing environment where the children were made very welcome, despite being in the minority here.

The hotel is spacious and all of the staff were friendly and happy to help. Room cleaning standards were excellent. The evening entertainment was variable but fun, the flamenco show was certainly the high point for us.

The outdoor pool was a little chilly for my liking (in April) but that didn't stop the children! The indoor pool was warmer but a there was a distinct lack of loungers in this area.

Breakfast and evening meals were always good quality - some repetition of items, but always some new things each day too and the food off the hot counter was always freshly cooked and piping hot.

We liked being able to access the beach straight from the hotel grounds, through a security gate - straight across the walkway and onto the beach - no roads to cross. The beach is more gritty than sandy but the children enjoyed playing in the sea with its breaking waves.

Nerja itself is an easy 5 minute stroll away through the old, narrow street and was a very pleasant and civilised place to walk around. The views from the Balcon de Europa are spectacular and so are the displays of icecreams in some of the shops!

Very enjoyable, would return to Nerja and the Monica.

We have visited this hotel about 20 times and can recommended it as a most relaxing way to spend a winter holiday. The staff are efficient and friendly and never forget their regulars. There is plenty of choice of food available on the self service buffet and also in the pool bar. With 2swimming pools and a small gym or even a dip
in the sea for the very hardy it is possible to burn off some of the calories. Most of the rooms have sea or mountain views and the beds are very comfortable. Nerja is a small bustling village and although it has grown over the years still manages to keep its special appeal in the narrow winding streets. There is plenty of entertainment available for all the family or the chance to spend a lazy holiday on the beach or relaxing in the hotel garden for the less energetic.

We have just returned from an Easter break at the Riu Monica .This was our third visit to the hotel however feel that although it is a good hotel it doesn't warrant Thomsons platinum status.
Over eight days the weather was great for five and a bit mixed for three. The Easter processions are fantastic to see starting at the church in the square,we'll worth watching.
The hotel is situated next to a small beach across town from the Balcon where you can either sit on the beach and hire a sunbed or by the hotel pool. There were a lot of sun beds availiable by the pool but a lot of them ended up in shade due to the 'T' shape of the hotel.

Staff at the hotel are all extremely helpful. We requested a room on the 7 th floor as they have a terrace rather than a balcony and get the afternoon sun and sea views. We were very happy that when we sent an e- mail request the staff replied promptly.

The whole hotel is kept immaculately clean.Bedrooms were a good size with lots of storage.Beds we found firm but very comfortable. We did have to ask for extra pillows as only one is provided and are very very flat.As we had some hot sunny weather the rooms got very hot and even though the air con appeared to be blowing it did not allow you to regulate the temp. We then found out that the air con isn't on in the hotel until May.For a 4* platinum this should be availiable all year.
The bathroom towels are terrible and definately need replacing,I have never stayed anywhere with such old thin towels.Room safes are available at a cost but are at the bottom of the wardrobe so you have to crawl round on your hands and knees to get in it!
Most of the clientele are quite elderley so if you are on late sitting at dinner(8.15) there is not much atmosphere in the bar area as a lot of people seem to go to bed. There is an entertainment program but we tended to go out.Good service in the bar and usual hotel prices.
Maybe an open sitting at dinner would be better like there is for breakfast and you can sit anywhere.
There are lots of friendly bars across the road or in surrounding area at very good prices. Also most bars offer free wi- fi which the hotel lets itself down on as you only get 90 mins free per day in the lobby and if you only go on wi- fi for five mins and go out of the lobby area that's your allocation gone.By doing this they are encouraging people to go out.

The television also needs to have basic satellite channels not just BBC world news. I know there has been a problem in Spain with the satellites changing but feel a 4* hotel should have made plans for this.

Food at breakfast and dinner was very good with lots of choice, all very hot with lots being cooked by the chefs, the breakfast chef particularly was very cheery! The dining room is run with military precision and really cannot be faulted. It's a big positive for the hotel.

Town is only a 10 minute stroll with lots of things to see and bars to soak up the atmosphere watching the locals.Burriana beach is well worth a visit, it's about a 40 minute walk or € 7 in a taxi.Lots of fresh fish,BBQ and paella freshly cooked.

Overall the Riu Monica is a good hotel but needs updating which I believe is in the near future. If this is done I would return but not until then as people now expect modern facilities,ie:free wi-fi, satellite TV, air-conditioning and fluffy towels! Basics in 2014, with this may bring a more varied age group giving a more balanced vibe.

We visited the Riu Monica for our honeymoon at the start of April. Check-in was very efficient and the welcome drink was most appreciated. The hotel itself is a nice size, tastefully decorated and in good order. The majority of the rooms seem to have a sea view. Our room was in good order, clean, tastefully decorated and a reasonable size. Our bed was a very good size - two single beds with a double mattress on top. Far better for our honeymoon than two single beds pushed together. We travelled with our 4 month old daughter Amelia and she was provided with a cot, this was fine and with the room been a good size there was plenty of space for it. Maid service was superb, extra towels were provided for baby and we had no complaints from this.

Been early April the weather was warm, in the mid to high teens rather than scorching hot. For most of the week we managed to use the sunbeds even at this time of year. The pool was most inviting, however not been heated we didn't use it. We did however make use of the hotels indoor pool several times, this was never particularly busy and our daughter loved the water.

At check-in we were offered one of two sittings for the restaurant, we chose the latter sitting. The restaurant staff were very efficient, our daughter took a particular liking to Jose Luis who regularly served our table. Special thanks also go to the hotel manager who was particularly friendly. Food was of good quality and plenty of choice. Towards the end of the week it was starting to get a bit repetitive though, I guess there are only so many ways to cook chicken, pork and fish each night. Breakfast was good, plenty of cold selection with the hot food cooked on view.

Around the hotel there are various bars and cafés, a few on the beach side which can be accessed from the rear gate and several across the road from reception. Been a short distance from the centre of Nerja we found the prices in these cafés very reasonable.

We had a very good stay at the Riu Moncia and hopefully will return in the future.

A seven floor building of 3 wings fronting the beach, all rooms seem to get a partial sea view.

Spacious, airy public areas furnished with comfortable chairs and sofas. The lobby is quite grand in a restrained way, it got a 'wow' from our grandchildren! The whole place, reception, bars, dining room, toilets are sparkling clean.

Grounds are adequate and very neat rather than huge. Pool area has plenty of sun loungers, towels on a deposit basis.

Rooms are of standard size and layout but kept in excellent order by the cleaners and maintenance staff.

A fridge, air conditioning but no tea/coffee facility. The safe is chargeable (when will hotels stop charging for our security, it should come as standard, like sheets on the bed and water from the tap ).
The TV is below par, sets are old, only channels in English are 24 hour news and one poor entertainment channel, which seemed to show ancient programs.

Wi-fi. You get a free 90 minute session in lobby area per day. Otherwise available elsewhere at reasonable charge.

Don’t expect too much from the entertainment – pretty ordinary, just a bit of a distraction.

Activities during the day also basic. Children will have to entertain themselves in the main.

Not many children, its clientele tends to be middle aged upward, mainly British and German, but not exclusively.

Dining is on the whole pleasurable. The room is large enough but does get crowded at times. There are two sittings for dinner, currently 6.30 and 8.15, you will be allocated a table for your stay, if it's not to your liking just ask, I can reassure you that the staff will help you if at all possible.

Assuming you have stayed in a mainstream holiday 4 star hotel, you will be familiar with the standard offerings, the salads, the hot choices, the overcooked vegetables etc. However, judged against its peers it comes out as pretty good for choice and quality. We never needed to eat out – which is a good indicator. Wine ranged from about 12 Euro up, water chargeable.

The main bar and entertainment area again roomy and comfortable with staff on the ball. Drinks a bit expensive, but not unusual for quality hotel. Small beer 2.40€, G&T 5.60€ . Plenty of bars and restaurants close by if you prefer.

Speaking of which, the hotel may appear to be a little way from the main town, but Nerja is very compact and a 5 minute walk brings you into the bustling, but pretty and admirably preserved, town. It is most un-touristy; at all times we were very aware of being in a Spanish town amongst local people. Buildings, restaurants and many shops are traditional.

The staff are excellent. All seemed genuinely pleased to help and assist, invariably cheerful but still providing professional standards. The managers make a point of visiting tables at dinner and making sure everything is satisfactory. We can commend the Assistant Director (Sergio) for his dedication to customer relations.

I will look forward to returning both to this hotel and Nerja.

Room Tip: Request a west wing room for sun in the afternoon/evening and east for morning sun.

We visited Nerja travelling with Thomson the first week of April and stayed at the hotel. Nice hotel, lovely friendly staff but for me it didn't live up to other 4 star hotels I have stayed at.The rooms were air conditioned and I think most have a view of the sea. I did think that the charge of 15 euro for use of the room safe a bit steep as I'm used to having that facility free of charge in most 4 star hotels.
Perhaps it was because it was early in the season but the evening entertainment was dull with almost Karaoke singing and I saw nothing of the daytime entertainment. The weather was a bit breezy which meant that it was difficult to stay around the out door pool even on the sunniest of days. I enjoyed the food it was of a very good quality but I found that the evening buffet was a bit repetitious. The indoor pool was lovely as the weather was too breezy and the outdoor pool temperature too cold to swim in. There is also a gym. The hotel is only a short walk to the the main centre of Nerja and the Balcon de Europe. I enjoyed our stay there but if I return to Nerja I don't think I'd book the Riu Monica next time
