“Marvellous value and a lovely hotel”
Reviewed 28 July 2011

My wife and I booked a two-week holiday at the Nerja Club Hotel in July, 2011, with half board. We booked it nearly nine months in advance, discovering what we thought was a bargain not to be missed, however early. Setting out, we were a little worried that there might be a snag.

We had stayed previously in Nerja in 2005 and so knew the geography of the town and were aware that a walk to the super Burriana Beach would be steeply downhill and take 15-20 minutes, but also that the return to the hotel would be best achieved slowly and take about 20-25 minutes. My wife and I are both over 60 but we welcome a walk since on holiday, we are inclined to eat and drink quite a lot, perhaps more than is good for us, so that would be no problem. Neither was it any problem to head for the lively centre of the Balcon de Europa or the bus station, and the return by the top road was gentler. Anyway, of course there are always taxis for those who don’t like walking (6€)!

We understood from other reviews and Thomson that the hotel was to be refurbished over the next months and wondered if we were to be given sub-standard accommodation at the price. Well, any fears that we may have had were soon allayed.

First of all, on arrival at 12.30 am, we were one of two parties to check in and with a cordial welcome, we were soon on our way to room 311 on the third floor. The room was smartly decorated in red and white, had a good bathroom with bath and shower, and was blessed with efficient air-conditioning. Waiting for us in the room was a cold meal with water. In fact, I even managed to get a pint in the bar downstairs at 5 to1 and the service was friendly and welcoming. In the morning, we were delighted to find that our balcony overlooked the attractive swimming pool and patio. In fact, the view beyond was over a delightful residential area of well-designed Spanish homes and luxuriant greenery to the sea, something we had not expected.

Breakfast was served between the generous hours of 8 am and 10.30 am, and supper between 7.30 pm and 10 pm. We were pleased with these flexible mealtimes and more than satisfied with the quality and variety of food provided which was well presented and could not fail to please all needs and tastes. The restaurant, situated downstairs, was air-conditioned and fairly spacious. There was seldom a queue for food.

The bar was smart and the staff pleasant, efficient and patient. We have never experienced such a sensible Happy Hour (between 5.30 and 6.30 pm) where any drinks purchased were subject to a 50% discount whatever they were. We also availed ourselves of some of the quite good entertainment provided though we prefer to spend most of our evenings down at Burriana Beach or in the vicinity of the lively Balcon de Europa town centre where on Friday, 16th July, we enjoyed the fireworks, music and dancing of the town’s Carmen fiesta.

We found the Reception staff very pleasant, polite people who were always obliging and immediately attentive to our needs e.g. our television required re-tuning for English programmes, and my wife was able to borrow a hair dryer free of charge. We found the staff willing to offer advice and information.

Both our room and the hotel in general were always smart and very clean. The cleaning staff work hard from early in the morning. Though a relatively small hotel, we found the Nerja Club elegant and comfortable. We enjoyed the complimentary use of the hotel’s new spa and jacuzzi

At a personal level, we would recommend the three excursions which we found good value for money and we were picked up on each occasion from the Nerja Club Hotel. While we enjoyed the day trip to Córdoba, a personal pilgrimage to visit the famous and amazing Mezquita, it required a lot of travelling. We were impressed by the other two trips, the first by train and coach to the El Chorro Gorge and Lake District, which was beautiful and relaxing; and the second by jeep, the Nature Tour Combi, which included a walk along a river, a swim in a pool, a barbecue meal in a pine forest and an winding ascent to a breathtaking mountain belvedere. We also made our own outings to the white town of Frigiliana and the Cave of Nerja, both inspiring places.

Finally, both my wife and I wish to thank the Hotel Nerja Club wholeheartedly for the lovely holiday, the cordiality of all staff and the hospitality which we enjoyed while in this establishment. There can be no hotel, in Nerja at least, which is such good value.

If you are looking for a good place to stay while visiting lovely Nerja you have picked the right hotel. It is also terrific value for money. We had b & b with evening meal. The choice of dishes were excellent and the food was good too. 15 min walk to beach. Coming back is uphill and is hard going. 20 min walk into town. Therefore you need to be fairly fit to explore on foot. I believe there are buses to town and to the caves (a must see). The staff re very friendly & helpful. A couple of negitive points though, there was no fridge in our room, the mattress was hard & lumpy, air con did not make much difference and it was noisy.

I stayed in this hotel for a week half board with my boyfriend, and booked the entire holiday 100% based on the price, with a little input from the good reviews on here. We weren't expecting a lot from Nerja as we knew very little about it, and expected the hotel to be a basic 3*. However, we were so surprised by it all, and I think it was the best value for money holiday I've ever had!
The hotel has been newly refurbished, and we were lucky enough to get one of the newer rooms. We emailed the hotel beforehand asking for this, so if you want to definitely get one then email them. The lift to our rooms was a little old and could do with renewing, but we had no problems with it. We arrived late, and were given some basic food in our rooms, which was a nice touch. The rooms were modern and very clean. The air con worked amazingly, and we found we were cold more often than warm in the rooms, so perfect for sleeping and getting ready! However I'm not sure if this was because our room faced the road, and so didn't get any direct sunlight through the balcony doors.
The pool area was always quiet, and we had no trouble getting a sunbed no matter what time of the day we went down to the pool. The pool was clean, and we found no problems with it. The snack menu at the pool bar was a little basic - a few sandwiches and two burgers were all on offer, but if you had breakfast then lunch isn't a necessity. The staff in the pool bar weren't brilliant.. the service took quite a long time, and they could be slightly 'off' sometimes. For example, I went inside to buy an icecream from the fridge, and while choosing the one I wanted, a waitress appeared and stood right behind me saying hello. I felt a little intimidated and grabbed an ice cream and paid her!
The food was of a good standard. Breakfast was the standard cereal, cheese, ham, toast, bacon, eggs, beans, sausage etc. Some days the beans were replaced by tinned mushrooms making the breakfast quite dry, and not as good, but still OK. The evening meals were very, very nice. There was soup, bread, salad, hot and cold pasta, then a choice of about 3 main meals, with chips, veg (sometimes battered brocolli which I've never experienced before!!), rice etc. The main dishes were really nice, and of a much better quality than many other 3*s I've stayed in. There was a hotplate with a woman cooking every night, which I thought could be very nice. However, she just stood and made ham omelettes every single night, which had the tiniest pieces of ham in and weren't very nice at all. Maybe the hotel could make better use of the hotplate and cook fresh meat etc?
The location of the hotel isn't as much of an issue as the reviews make out. There is a large supermarket opposite selling almost anything you could want, so is perfect for snacks and water etc. One of the beaches right out of the hotel, a ten minute walk down a bank which is a nightmare walking back up afterwards! But we preferred to walk left out of the hotel and towards the centre of the resort. It's a nice walk with plenty of bars and shops along the way. This will take you into the centre of Nerja with a square and bars, shops etc in around 20 minutes, and the Plaza Tutti Fruiti which is the main area for nightlife in around 25 minutes. The beaches are also better towards this direction and much more picturesque, so I wouldn't reccommend walking the nightmare hill!
The spa in the hotel is also a really nice touch. It is brand new, with a small pool, gym, showers and jacuzzi. We really enjoyed going in there at the end of the day, to fill some time before tea, and it was a nice relaxing atmosphere. Another good thing about the spa area is the shower facilities which can be used if you need to leave the hotel a few hours after checking out. There is plenty of space to shower and get ready, with plugs for hair dryers etc.
The only bad things I would say about the hotel (if I had to be picky) are:
the showers in the room have absolutely no power and the temperature goes from hot to cold constantly
the beds are two singles, which I have no problem with if pushed together, but the legs of the bed slide on the tiled floor, making it impossible to sleep in them as a double
the entertainment was absolutely AWFUL!!! So we went out every night (get a taxi to tutti fruitti, it's much better)

Overall, a really, really high standard 3* and the spa area is an added bonus. Lovely rooms, lovely pool area, nice food.

Living in Marbella we are always on the look out for a "bolt hole" for a weekend away.
We found this hotel some months ago and stayed several times.

Recently we visited to take some pictures and speak to the Director regarding a business arrangement to offer our clients.

We are very impressed with the facilities and hospitality and have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone in the future.

Good luck for the future all members of staff, we will be back very soon!

Had a 10 Day break at this hotel, great place for relaxing break before 9pm after that you are harassed by the second rate entertainment if its in the bar on the side of the pool or even on the pavement outside you room window, you can hear it till midnight at least !!!!.
Hotel staff and food good location is not to bad a steep hill down to the town and beach not to good on way up on a hot day.
The pool area is a relaxed area in the day time, nice pool well maintained.
The entertainment on iast night was on the Hotel front below our room,a Flamenco singer followed by te Costa Del Sol's answer to Sid Little a member of staff in red spectacles and black attire performing karaoke style a night I hope tp forget very soon.

Nerja Club Hotel is perfect!
Has everything you are looking for.. bar the food!
The food is covered in oil, the oil covers the fried eggs and the broccoli/pasta/meats are usually swimming in it!
With decent food it would easily be a 4/5 star hotel!
Had an amazing week.. just go self catering if possible! x
