After my wife watched the Hells Kitchen episode where Gordon Ramsey re-visited La Parra, to sort out a variety of issues - we headed over to the restaurant in the hope of experiencing a slap up meal at the end of our holiday. We went down on a Thursday night when Flamenco Dancers provided entertainment.

The menu had been drastically reduced and simplified off the back of advice from Ramsay, which in my view was a good thing. I had the goats cheese starter with lamb shank and trifle for desert - the quality of which was good. The dancers were great. Everything my brother in law ordered had ran out - pate starter, the steak special main which disappointed a little as the place was not overrun in the slightest. My wife ordered the chicken breast - I had a taste of it and it was the most awful dish I have tasted in a restaurant and it was sent back for a lamb shank. The Paella (which is supposed to be excellent) was bland and lacking in taste.

What was to follow was to kill my experience completely. Ready to pay the bill with credit card, I was informed that the the machine had been dropped and was not working. I was told to go down the road to withdraw cash or alternatively provide my passport (driving license would not do - which seemed slightly odd). As I could not do this, the waiter accompanied me on an half hour long walk back to my apartment to get my passport. I called my credit card provider who advised that I should not hand it over. Off the back of this the waiter got angry and said the police will become involved - which I stated I would be happy with.

The next day (no police turned up by the way), I went back to the restaurant and the manager arranged payment with his bank over the phone and the bill was paid. I was amazed that this had not been done the day before to save embarrasment. The owner offered a weak apology and offered no recompense.

In closing, the food was hit or miss, but it was the experience sucked - La Parra has taken on board little of the advice provided by Gordon Ramsay. If they have not learned their lesson yet, there is no hope for them.
