“A piece of engineering and history”
Reviewed 20 August 2014

Included in the price of the day pass or the Fribourg City Card, you can ride the Funiculaire. It's a very small ride, really. A bit of the history of the city as it connects the old town with the new. You can also climb the stairs next to it, which is not that exhausting.
I heard it's the first funicular (and one of the few) to use wastewater as a counterweight, hence the smell!
The funicular itself is made of wood and is quite old, which makes it special.
You can also go from the old town to the new using the bus number 4 towards "Auge" (bus stop on the rail station side, facing the bicycle park), which might be preferrable if you don't care for the funicular and most importantly if you don't want to walk in the old town to go to some place, but what wouldn't you?

“Easy form of transportation.”
Reviewed 6 August 2014

It is much faster than taking bus 4 to the old town. However It is powered by toilet water so it has a bit of a funky odor.

“Great old piece of machinery”
Reviewed 18 June 2014

A great way to return from the medieval part of the town without puffing up all the hills and steps - easy to go down, much more difficult to go up

“Just another form of transport”
Reviewed 4 May 2014 via mobile

Great for when you need to get up the hill and the views aren't bad, but really it's just another form of public transport. If you've been on one, you've been on all. Don't go out of your way to ride.

“Poop powered trip”
Reviewed 19 April 2014

The driver was were friendly and explained the working principle, which was once common but now unique in Europe. Like all funicular railways, the two cars are connected by a cable, and weight of the descending car pulls the ascending car up the hill. To make sure that the upper car always weighs more than the lower one, each car has a tank that connects to the city sewer. They fill the car when it is at the top station and empty it at the bottom. The systems uses zero energy, but does give the lower terminal a certain "fragrance".
