Just got back from attending a wedding in Hungerford. We accepted a recommendation from friends to stay at 'The Bear' for two nights. Our bedrooms were in the courtyard, which proved to be a huge mistake!
Because of the hot weather, the courtyard was packed in the evening with diners and drinkers. One particularly rowdy table of eight (which was only feet from our bedroom door) were still screeching and whooping at 11:30 pm. We were travelling with children and asked reception to have words with the party about their volume. Predictably, this caused an increase in volume. After these people had retired noisily to bed, they were above us and sounded like the proverbial mice with clogs on, our next source of irritation burst through the doors or the next door room at midnight, very drunk and very, very noisy, cue another desperate call to reception requesting intervention . Once again this proved to be air their incentive to be rowdy and abusive.
I would be very surprised if we were the only guests to complain, and whilst I can appreciate that the staff cannot police the guests behaviour, a hotel cannot take payment for bedrooms that are in effect situated in a very noisy pub situation, the management need to decide where their core
business lies. If it is as a hotel then huge improvements in their service need to take place
Their rooms are basic to say the least, and whilst the bedding and towels were clean, carpets were grubby and bathrooms very dimly lit.
The restaurant food was average pub food, forgettable and uninspiring and breakfast service was nothing short of chaotic, the staff were struggling to cope, and a gentleman from the reception desk kept coming in to replenish the buffet table, but had he washed those hands and donned catering uniform? Regrettably not. And by the way, we don't need to see you topping up bowls of chopped fruit from plastic buckets at the buffet table! Take the bowls out of sight into the kitchen to refill them you numpty!!
Will we go back?
Will we recommend to others?
