The Bear Hotel Hungerford

Reviewed 20 July 2014

Just got back from attending a wedding in Hungerford. We accepted a recommendation from friends to stay at 'The Bear' for two nights. Our bedrooms were in the courtyard, which proved to be a huge mistake!
Because of the hot weather, the courtyard was packed in the evening with diners and drinkers. One particularly rowdy table of eight (which was only feet from our bedroom door) were still screeching and whooping at 11:30 pm. We were travelling with children and asked reception to have words with the party about their volume. Predictably, this caused an increase in volume. After these people had retired noisily to bed, they were above us and sounded like the proverbial mice with clogs on, our next source of irritation burst through the doors or the next door room at midnight, very drunk and very, very noisy, cue another desperate call to reception requesting intervention . Once again this proved to be air their incentive to be rowdy and abusive.
I would be very surprised if we were the only guests to complain, and whilst I can appreciate that the staff cannot police the guests behaviour, a hotel cannot take payment for bedrooms that are in effect situated in a very noisy pub situation, the management need to decide where their core
business lies. If it is as a hotel then huge improvements in their service need to take place
Their rooms are basic to say the least, and whilst the bedding and towels were clean, carpets were grubby and bathrooms very dimly lit.
The restaurant food was average pub food, forgettable and uninspiring and breakfast service was nothing short of chaotic, the staff were struggling to cope, and a gentleman from the reception desk kept coming in to replenish the buffet table, but had he washed those hands and donned catering uniform? Regrettably not. And by the way, we don't need to see you topping up bowls of chopped fruit from plastic buckets at the buffet table! Take the bowls out of sight into the kitchen to refill them you numpty!!
Will we go back?
No!
Will we recommend to others?
No!

Room Tip: Bare island rooms you should choose, which are away from the courtyard.

We are sorry to hear of your disappointing visit.

Our courtyard is very popular in the summer months and in the evenings then the tables by the courtyard rooms do tend to be occupied by other residents. We do ask that our guests respect each other and are sorry to hear that you were disturbed by the guests above and next door to you. We do take complaints in the night very seriously and our Night Porter is on hand to deal with these complaints.

With regards to the Breakfast then on a weekend we do offer a cooked breakfast from 8am until Midday. From 9am -10am is usually the busiest time and during this time the team do ensure that they have extra items ready to ‘top up’ the buffet. A hand wash sink is also just inside the kitchen and all team members do ensure that they wash their hands before handling any food. We do take your point that the fruit containers could have been taken out to the kitchen to be replenished but do also find that it is quicker for the guest if we replenish at the buffet station.

Kind Regards

We first went into this hotel in May ...they were fully booked at the time but we stayed for lunch.
The very helpful man on Reception (Joe Bennett) recommended another hotel in nearby Marlborough and checked availability for us.
As we were in the area again last weekend we pre booked a night at the Bear....a Superior room ,which was very large and spacious. Excellent bathroom .
The service in the dining room on both visits was good and friendly.
To our amazement the gentleman who had helped us on our first visit remembered us ....and what had happened ! When you think 2 months had gone by and he didn't know us, I think this is remarkable..... An asset to the Bear I would say....Well done!
.

Room Tip: Although our room was at the front overlooking the main road the traffic at night did not disturb us...

Sinnita and Caroline made our party's stay very efficient and fun.

The Location is great and well recommended for those fishing the Kennet

We arrived late after being at the Chelsea Flower Show all day. The welcome was excellent, reception staff really warm friendly and helpful.
Only one negative which was our room. It was very small, which would have been fine but the wardrobe was just a boarded off section in the corner of the room and very short so no where to hang my outfit ( long dress) for the Wedding we were attending. Also, no soap or toiletries in the shower room and no towel rail or hooks or anything to hang towels or clothes or robes so everything had to be put on the floor !!
I would have thought a small bar of soap for hand washing would be considered a hygiene essential in an establishment that serves food. Hungerford is a beautiful little town and the Bear is a gem, if the bedrooms could have a little attention.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review.

We are pleased to hear that you found the team to be friendly and that you had a warm welcome.

With regards to the bedroom that you were in, then we do take your comments on board and are looking at how we expand the wardrobe space for when guests do have long outfits.

We are sorry to hear that the liquid soap /shower gel which is in the bathroom was missed and have passed your comments onto our Brand Manager that a bar soap would be appreciated rather than the liquid soap.

Should you be in the area again then we do hope that you will visit us.

My wife and I stayed overnight in a very comfortable and immaculately clean room overlooking the pretty chalk stream. From the very moment of our arrival, every member of staff we encountered, proved excellent ambassadors for the hotel. Particular mention should be made of the manager and his excellent restaurant help - Stacey. Nothing was too much for them and the help was provided with a genuine warmth.
The restaurant fare proved excellent value for money and was very promptly served. Superbly placed for visiting the myriad of local antique shops (all within very easy walking distance of the High Street), my wife and I shall definitely return. Well done ALL at The Bear!

The Bear is one of many throughout the country owned by Old English Inns. The standard of rooms, food and service is good without being exceptional but they are all really good value. The Bear is situated on the banks of the Kennet in a quiet street of the main drag and provided a restful and comfortable break.

The Bear. Cosy, small, great and ordinary. Very different thoughts I have about this place!

I stayed there a night on a business trip. It looks like nothing special from the outside. The rooms are cosy, small, old fashioned and it is time for a renovation. However, the main buildings bar and restaurant has a certain charme. The barkeeper is friendly and the Ale is tasty. So what am I complaining about? Burgers are home made and the fries are better than I had expected.

The breakfast was of good taste and all wishes were fulfilled.
