“Expensive and Shabby”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2013

Hotel is well located in the heart of Hungerford. The staff are great and very friendly.
Unfortunately the hotel does not live upto the £99.00 per night price tag.
The room we were given was to the back of the hotel on the ground floor. The carpets were filthy and in need of at least cleaning, probably replacing. The bathrooms were tired but acceptable, beds comfy, sheets well worn, bed covers stained.
Can get noisy at night from the bar which is used by locals with smoking area near the rooms, so you walk through everyone's smoke to get into your room.
Breakfast was continental but full English offered for an extra £5.00.
In short the room should have a £50-£70 max price tag, £100 is far to expensive

I have 3 basic criteria for a good stay when I'm on a business trip: 1) comfortable bed; 2) powerful shower; 3) good food. The Three Swans met and exceeded the criteria. I was met with a friendly welcome and efficient check-in. My double room, in the annexe overlooking a pretty beer garden with containers of plants, was modern and contemporary. The bed and duvet was exremely comfortable and there were some added touches - padded coat hangers, a fan and reading lights, that you don't often get when you stay in charming period hotels like this.
I slept well, there was no noise to speak of, and breakfast was good: choice of cereals, dried fruits, yoghurts, toast. The cooked breakfast on offer does cost a small amount extra but it is freshly cooked to order, which justifies it in my mind: who wants the congealed eggs and bacon sitting around that most big hotels serve up?
A delightful hotel in a delightful town, and will definitely return if I pass this way again.

I stayed here for 6 nights as I was working in the area and have a few minor complaints, but first I would like to say the staff were very nice and charming also very helpful.

The first complaint is.....

In my opinion the pricing is over the top, the room we had was a twin with en suite and this was £70.00 with continental breakfast a cooked breakfast was an extra £5.00 which to be honest was a cheek.

Secondly, The room was advertised with a flat screen TV !!!! hmmmm well yes it was flat screen but it was the smallest TV I have ever seen in a hotel bedroom it was no bigger than a computer screen.

Third, the shower could not be regulated properly and went from hot to cold in a nano second frequently.

Fourth, The price of the drinks was extortionate and give London prices a run for their money,2 large glasses of the house white, I bottle of peroni ,1 single vodka and coke = £20.20.

Fifth, The food, again priced high and truthfully not as nice as it should have been on my last night I had the sirloin and had asked for it medium rare and it was closer to well done and it was also quite tough, however it did taste nice.

Overall the stay was quite pleasant but for me over priced.

Room Tip: as the room was booked for me I would suggest you try and haggle for a beter room.

This hotel is full of character just like the town of Hungerford. Stayed for 2nights while I attended a family wedding. First night there, we had a family meal, restaurant was busy, but staff were so attentive and very friendly. Food was spot on! The hotel is very old and full of original features, but there is a modern annex built on to hotel. Rooms are very comfortable and all amenities catered for. I would recommend this hotel and already planning to return in August for the beer festival.

Room Tip: If you stay in the original building, don't let your imagination run away with you. Can feel a b...

We booked two nights (a year in advance) at £95 a night B&B with dinner on the first night. The ground floor is nicely decorated and smart. However our room (no 7) and the decor upstairs was very dated. It's a really old building and the floors are uneven everywhere, one of the rooms has a three inch gap under the bedroom door. Our room had a bathroom with sloping ceilings and was only 5' high over the bath so you had to be careful not to knock yourself out when getting out. A 5' American tourist might have found it charming but at 5' 8" and 6' 1" we didnt. Our bed sloped so badly we had to swop the bedding around so our feet were at the headboard end as we couldn't sleep with out feet higher than our heads. Our television didn't work and the evening staff couldn't get it working, the morning receptionist came up the next day and fiddled with it and got it going but warned us not to move any cables or it might go off again. If you hung anything on the hangers in the wardrobe they fell to the bottom, over and over again ... we began to wonder if we were being filmed for a joke tv show. The food wasn't bad but we had to ask if they had taken the order down correctly as my husbands Caesar salad was enormous and looked great and my Poached pear and walnut salad was tiny, a pear, an inch cube of crumbled Stilton, 8 salad leaves the size of a basil leaf and a dozen pine kernels, we thought they had brought me the starter version. Breakfast was lovely but the eggs were not cooked to order and could be freshly done or had been sitting a while and the tables were not cleared as guests left so we had to sit amongst piles of debris which spoiled the experience. Oh and in the afternoon the barman came out into the courtyard, lit a cigarette and with it hanging out of his mouth cleared glasses with one hand while texting on his mobile with the other. Overall a disappointing stay for the money. Perhaps because we were a large group they thought we wouldn't mind a more lax service, perhaps if it had been £65 a night we wouldn't have but for £95 a night it was a great disappointment. Back to The Bear next year.

The room we had was large, clean and well appointed. As is the whole hotel in fact. We ate in the restaurant and had breakfast, both of which we good.

The staff are pleasant and very helpful. The bar serves a good choice of beer too, especially as it was a beerfest when we were there

Room Tip: Hungerford is a dull place to stay! Unless you like antiques

an interesting hotel in a interesting town , set in the busy town of hungerford this hotel is value for money , the staff are always happy to help and the food is well above standard , the surroundings are very comfortable with leather seating and a touch of opulence, the town is set on a beautiful river and canal which are close together , the river dun has a flint bed which has crystal clear waters and spawning salmon and trout can be seen swimming , the kennet and Avon canal offers boat trips and there are wild fowl which swim close to the banks , the worst thing about the town is the volume of traffic at rush hour morning and evening
