My boyfriend booked this hotel as a surprise for my birthday. On arrival, we were upgraded, which was a lovely surprise. The man on reception was very knowledgeable and welcoming. First impressions of the hotel were excellent. The decor is lovely; a lot of thought has obviously gone into creating a relaxing ambience. We had room 10. It wasn't huge but this was forgiven when we saw the beautiful view. I was a little disappointed that there wasn't a bath however the shower room was lovely, very clean. The temperature of the shower was hot, very hot or super hot. Even on the lowest setting it was verging on unpleasant. We had a lovely evening meal at Plato's (highly recommended) and returned around 10.30pm. There was very little noise from the other guests so falling asleep wasn't a problem. Staying asleep however was. The room was so hot and the bed creaked at the slightest flinch. This became very annoying, very quickly. At 7.30am we gave up and got ready for breakfast. The service was efficient and friendly, We both had a full English; the scrambled eggs were superb! I noticed a couple of things that I think could be improved. 1. Better lighting and 2. Background music. As the only people in there it seemed rather lifeless. Checking out was easy and the receptionist was very friendly. Overall, a lovely stay. We found this hotel excellent. It is beautifully decorated and the staff are great. We would definitely return.

We had fond memories of the Royal from a visit to Kirkby Lonsdale 20 years ago.
It has been tastefully and sympathetically renovated recently and the very efficient website allowed us to preview the good work as well as viewing each bedroom before booking the one we wanted.
We chose room 9 on the top floor, overlooking the market square and the surrounding hills - we were not disappointed.
The staff were friendly and helpful and the bar had decent local beer as well as a good choice of wines by the glass and whisky - something for everyone. We didn't arrive in time for dinner so can't comment on that but the breakfast was excellent and hot selections were served at the table hot and fresh - a welcome change. We will definitely be back!

Our experience of the service was good, from the moment we booked to the moment we paid.
My food was excellent. It was indeed restaurant prices, but I felt it was worth it. Good real ales, fair wine list and sufficient whiskey to occupy me for a few nights.

The rooms I felt were good for the money, and the hotel felt as though it had been recently decorated.

Looking forward to returning.

We have just returned from a two night mid week break. We stayed in room 4 and although it was lovely I fully agree with the previous review of the room. We too found the shower far too hot, the rattling door an annoyance and nowhere to plug the kettle safely. Although having the duel aspect windows was nice they are overlooked and we felt we needed to draw the curtains to get ready, the room lighting is inadequate to compensate for the heavy curtains. There is also a lot of traffic noise. I think we were unlucky to have a noisy party staying in the other rooms and so had very little sleep on the first night.
We ate in the restaurant on both nights from the set menu. We were surprised that there was no vegetarian option on the first night. We were also disappointed to find that we had the same choice of soups, fish and one out of the three puddings on both nights.

Room Tip: go for a quieter room overlooking the courtyard.

Myself and my partner stayed at the Royal Hotel for one night on Sat 7th May to celebrate an anniversary. We felt that Royal Hotel has obviously had a huge amount of money spent on it and and it has been renovated and decorated with style. We stayed in room 4 which is a lovely large room with a bath at the end of the bed and also an on-suite bathroom with shower.
The things that spoiled our visit were a problem with our evening meals, the subsequent reaction of the hotel staff and a few attention to detail type niggles.
Our main problem was that for dinner we both ordered a chicken special dish for our main courses and when the meals arrived they were very obviously not cooked enough. Even a light press on the meat had blood coming out and on cutting open, the meat on the inside was not cooked and was very bloody. We were both quite shocked and we showed a waitress who apologised and took the meals away. She soon returned with the same meals and said that the chef had said there was no problem them and it was just blood clots. We were not sure what this was supposed to mean and said that we could not eat the meals like this as they were very obviously not cooked properly. She took the food away again and this time a waiter came to our table and said that the chef had said that nobody had complained before (as if that was relevant) and if we didnt want the meals we would be charged anyway - at this point we felt like we were in the middle of one of those tv restaurant scenes were you can't believe how bad the reaction to a customer problem is. We wondered if we might be threatened with the police next! We said that we still didnt want the food as it was not cooked properly and we asked if we could order something else. He replied that we could but we would have to pay for the alternative as well as the untouched meals. We said we would leave it then as we were feeling pretty upset about our treatment by then.
After another 5 minutes or so the waiter came back and said that after a lot of persuading the chef had agreed to cook us something else and not to charge us for both meals - how nice of him not to charge us for the meals we had not been able to eat! We decided to order a vegetarian dish as we had gone off the idea of any kind of meat and when it arrived it was very nice.
Our other comments seem minor after such poor customer service but are worth mentioning as hopefully they are easily rectified.
In our room there was a nice dressing table and chair but no lamp or socket anywhere near it so my partner could not see properly or plug her hairdryer in.
The menu's in the restaurant/bar were sticky and wet.
Glass tables in the bar not wiped clean even though staff had plenty of opportunity while we were there.
Door to our room only held shut by the lock and rattled in the wind until we wedged something against it.
Water temperature in shower was too hot even on coldest setting and dangerously hot on anything above!
Wallpaper edges peeling off and looking a bit tatty in room and bathroom.
We found the buffet items for breakfast quite strange as there was just a huge bowl of Corn Flakes and another of Museli and a couple of jugs of Juices. The cooked breakfast was very nice but we thought it very strange to have such a poor choice of buffet items.

Overall we felt very dissapointed and that the hotel had definitely not lived up to our expectations of what should be found in a hotel charging £180 per night.
A final point to add insult to injury was that after we had left and paid our bill we realised that we had been charged for the more expensive chicken dishes that we had not eaten rather than the cheaper vegetarian dishes.

We've stayed before a few times and always enjoyed our stays, the hotel is lovely and the food, drink and staff are great

We stayed in Room 11 , on the top floor in the corner this time, which had a bath in bedroom - nicely finished room / decor. Freeview on the tv v good. The missing curtains from my last review have now been installed

It was a snowy evening when we stayed, and the hotel had already thoughtfully provided an extra heater to make sure we were nice and cosy
