We have just returned from a two night stay having used a living social offer. We are pleased to say we had a lovely time and plan to go and revisit later this year. The manager and his staff were excellent and nothing was too much trouble. We had a very relaxing couple of days in lovely surroundings. Our room was clean well equipped and quiet, the food in particular the evening meals were excellent compliments to the chef. Again the afternoon tea and the breakfasts were on par with the other quality hotels we are used to visiting. As for the leisure facilities they were good but we felt they would benefit from a seated relaxation area, again we found the staff helpfully and cheery. We look forward to our next stay.

I can see why the reviews are mixed but some are a little harsh and perhaps are a greater reflection of the authors than the hotel.

Whoop Hall is a great base for exploring a great area. The leisure facilities are excellent and are a great way to unwind after a day out walking, cycling etc. The food is also very good and the service from the younger staff is friendly and helpful. The unlimited tea and coffee in the afternoon was also a nice touch. Our room was absolutely fine with a large en suite and massive shower. Breakfast is self service with plenty on offer and it is regularly topped up with fresh, hot food.

Yes, the place could do with a little TLC but it's not dirty or falling apart, just needs freshening up in places. We went on a voucher (live social) so it worked out at incredible value and certainly got more than expected for the deal. It seems that many staying here do the same but somehow expect 5 star facilities and treatment for £30/night?

However, Whoop Hall does seem to be between a rock and hard place with which market it is trying to appeal to and I suspect I would have been disappointed if I'd paid the face value. The owner/manager comes over as being a bit brusque, even curt and this doesn't help the atmosphere. Worse still, he has no issue in having discussions with his staff that really shouldn't be done in public or earshot of guests. Voucher schemes are double edged swords. Guests get a cheap deal and hotels fill otherwise empty rooms, but surely the aim should be to encourage at least some of those voucher guests to want to return and have no problem paying full price. I don't think I would do this at Whoop Hall and sadly, a bit more friendly hosting from the owner could have changed that along with him working with his staff rather than pulling them up (for no apparent reasons) in earshot of the guests.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the road are likely to suffer less road noise but are then above the bar. I'd o...

The staff were very friendly and very helpful. The room was clean and light but there was no hair dryer and the bed was not very comfortable. We only had a view of the fitness centre and the roves but it was not noisy. The windows opened wide and as it was hot that was really good. The food at breakfast was fresh and tasty but it was pre cooked rather than cooked to order. The dinner menu was very tasty but the set menu was a little limited and uninspiring. The decor was a little tired and carpets were threadbare in places but we were told that a refurbishment was going to take place shortly. As a hotel guest you had access to the fitness centre and the pool which was a real bonus. The hotel is close to Ingleton and Kirby Lonsdale and a great place for walks of various lengths and difficulties.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the fields

The Hotel could do with a little TLC to freshen it up. We found the menu uninspiring but the staff very helpful. There was a function on the night we arrived which was a little noisy but it was very quiet the second night. As we had dogs with us there was a lovely area of grass to walk them on but you need to keep them on the lead as it is right next to the main road.

Room Tip: There was a function on the night we arrived which was a bit noisy but it finished at midnight. The...

We stayed at The Whoop Hall using a Wowcher voucher. Having read some reviews wasn't sure what to expect. We had a warm welcome and were shown to a lovely light and airy room which was clean and a good size. Only down side was there was no shower. The atmosphere was relaxed and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The food was freshly cooked and adequate. I used the pool and was given a fresh towel on entry. I'd recommend the hotel.

As a family of four, we chose this hotel for a two night stay as it promised us a spacious family room and as family run establishment, great service. What a disappointment! We feel completely ripped off. Our stay at the Hyatt Regency in Birmingham cost the same amount of money and the difference was a 5 star accommodation verses a 1 star at Whoop Hall at best.

It must've been a great hotel in the 70's because they have not bothered to update any of the furnishings or amenities. Our bathroom reminded me of a motel back in South Africa with the toilet showing signs of never being cleaned under the rim. Unfortunately, I know this because this is the view when you're in the bath. I felt nauseous at the state of the bathroom.

When we arrived, our room was made up for 3 people, despite our printed off reservation clearly being for 4. I was told that the error was mine seeing as these mistakes can easily happen when bookings are made on-line. I'm not sure how to take this as surely most reservations are made on-line these days. Another sign that the hotel is not up to modern standards. A fourth bed was brought into our room which now meant zero space in our "spacious family room".

Music from the bar downstairs was played loudly until 11:30pm each night, meaning that our 5 and 8 year old couldn't sleep until it ceased. At which point we could hear the road traffic all night long.

Both beds in the room has collapsed bases so both sagged off badly to one side. Needless to say, the most uncomfortable night sleep.

The meals, however, were lovely thanks to the chef.

Oh yes, the only thing that the hotel did NOT lie about on their website was about their parking - it was indeed free.

Please do yourself and your family a favour and stay far far away.

Room Tip: Best way to pick a good room is to pick a different hotel

I arrived at Whoop Hall and was pleasantly surprised by the well maintained grounds and attractive exterior. Finding the hotel is easy as it is just off the main A65 road into Kirkby Lonsdale (one mile away) with masses of parking space. The receptionist, Nicole was very helpful and welcoming and invited me to take the complimentary tea (earlier than advertised) that was part of the special offer (2 nights with a tea and one dinner included). The tea comprised freshly made sandwiches and an abundance of lovely cakes (lemon pound cake, a scone, and a wonderful chocolate flan. The first room I was shown only had a bath (No.14) but it was large and had a four poster bed. The next room (No.6) was smaller but had a shower and was at the far end of the hotel away from the main part with a great view over open countryside. You have to be realistic; this is a 2-star hotel which has an attached spa. Don't expect luxury. The pool is 18 metres, there is an excellent sauna, a steam room and Jacuzzi plus a tanning rain shower (?) and a well equipped gym with personal trainers if required. The spa was a really welcomed asset which I made full use of. You can access the spa in a dressing gown along corridors without going through the main reception area. After the extensive tea, I went without supper but other guests raved about the chicken, lamb and particularly the fish and chips. So on my last night I chose the fish and chips and it was superb; lightly battered and twice cooked crispy chips with excellent mushy peas and homemade tartar sauce. My starter was a smoked salmon and prawn cocktail. The coffee was strong and delicious as you would expect from Kim the Portuguese manager. I understand that the liver pate was 'the best ever' by another diner. Remember this was all included in the price!!! But if I had paid for the meal, I would have been delighted at both the quality and style. Wine prices are lower than average with a very fine Pouilly Fouise (sp?) at £19.95 and a delicious South African Sauvignon Blanc at £15.95. There are beautiful patio areas with colourful flowers both to the front and rear of the hotel where other guests were willing to chat and share their experiences - all very positive. One couple were regulars and described the hotel as 'an oasis'. Another couple live nearby but come to Whoop Hall 'for a break and a great meal'. Breakfast was buffet style but comprehensive with tasty sausages, quality back bacon, fresh grilled tomatoes, choice of eggs, black pudding, mushrooms and baked beans. There was also a continental option of croissants etc. Breakfast continues until 10:00. What more could you wish for?
I was on deal but the manager and Nicole treated me just as any other guest - do make a point of talking to Kim as once you crack his dour exterior you get a very amiable chap; he is monitoring the young staff constantly.
Please ignore the unrealistic reviews from people who have no idea what a Lake District hotel or Guest House charges today and you certainly wouldn't get the spa pool, superb food and the many other facilities at twice the Whoop Hall prices.

Room Tip: If you want a shower, let them know as certain rooms only have a bath. I imagine all rooms are quie...
