“Delicious tasting menu”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

We stayed in Room 8, nice suite with plenty of room and bathroom suitable for wheelchair users. We went for the tasting menu with accompanying wine. It was really good, some great taste combinations and knowledgeable staff, particularly with the wine. Staff were efficient and organised. It is a beautiful old building though not much is made of the history of the place. I can see why some people say the hotel could do with a little spruce up, there was a dead plant in the entrance hall, a couple of webs here and there but these are not the sort of things that overly bother us. Breakfast was lovely, freshly squeezed orange juice and eggs benedict, cooked to perfection. Well done chef and staff!

Firstly, this is a very good character hotel. We stayed in room 3 which was very nice although the carpet is an acquired taste. You also need to get used to the slope on the floor which means that without a pillow your head is higher than your feet in bed. Also, you can't get wi-fi in your room, you have to go downstairs to the lounge. This is something that they should look to address.
The staff are excellent and nothing is a problem. The menu is a little limited but they were very happy to ask chef to offer an alternative if you didn't care for the choice offered.
The food at dinner was excellent and breakfast was also very good. Bringing toast when you can eat it hot rather than at the same time as everything else is something that more hotels should do!
It was also nice to be offered sugar that wasn't in a packet.
Their tea pots are also good. The tea is in an infuser in the pot so no need for a strainer.
So it gets an 'excellent' review.

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper you may want a room furthest from the road if the leaves are off the tres...

We got lost trying to find the hotel - there's a sign for it on the main road, but if you blink, you'll miss it (which we did). We rang the hotel and the very friendly woman who answered the phone got us back on track in no time.
We arrived, sat in the garden and looked out on a garden that was very pretty. Our room (#8) was large, on the ground floor and facing the driveway. I wouldn't recommend this room as we could hear the traffic all night long, which was odd considering the hotel is set in away from the motorway. Our bathroom was strangely proportioned, containing a toilet, sink and open (no doors or curtain). It was the size of a small bedroom and thus felt cavernous, especially as the toilet and sink were side-by-side. We struggled with the hot and cold water and there was obvious mould/mildew on the grouting.
We cheered up immensely when we went to the restaurant and discovered that Hipping Hall has an incredibly talented, creative chef. We drank their house white - very drinkable and a good value. The service in the restaurant could not be faulted; every waiter knew what to do and when, and did it all with a smile. The restaurant more than made up for the room.
We would recommend this hotel, but suggest not staying in #8.

Room Tip: Don't choose #8, it's too close to the road.

This was a two day treat. We arrived at this very pretty stone manor house on a gloriously sunny afternoon. We ordered tea outside but why are there no cushions on the chairs? This is not a cheap B&B and I would expect that the metal chairs would be supplied with cushions.
The six course dinner was excellent. An interesting wine list but a little eclectic. In some cases the mark up on the wines is too greedy. Service was good. The breakfast on the next morning was also excellent and the service was exemplary. We again had dinner on the second night and we we chose three dishes which were outstanding. Breakfast service on the second morning was very poor even though the dining room was not busy. We had to wait to give our order then food arrived out of order and we had to ask again for orange juice. The latte coffee was very poor with grains floating in it. What a disappointing end to our stay.
Be warned that the house is just set back from a very busy main road and some rooms are noisy if it's warm and you open the window the noise can be quite intrusive. The bathroom was very smart and the dressing gowns luxurious. The room was comfortable and well appointed. All was very clean - just need to remember the lower part of chairs also need dusting! This is a very fine hotel just needs a few tweaks.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms facing the road.

I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel. This visit was a gift for our 25th wedding anniversary. Nice quiet and well presented hotel. No tea making facilities in bedroom (room 5 at the rear) but it was provided as part of the service from the bar (no charge). Breakfast was the best part well presented and service without fault.Wish we had opted for the evening meal. The dinning hall is worth the experience. The bed was HUGE and really comfortable. It is an old building with some history rather than corporate shiny bits. I will return and will recommend to friends. Check out the location before arrival as the entrance isn't that obvious. Wish we had opted for the evening meal.

Stayed in room 6 which was amazing!!! The staff and service were second to none.
Celebrating a special Birthday with friends who kindly treated us. The wonderful 5 course dinner, with all the extras, Fab cocktails and pre dinner nibbles made it all very special!
The afternoon tea on arrival in the beautiful gardens added that extra treat....

Room Tip: Room 6 lovely decor and fab bathroom!

My husband and I have just enjoyed a lovely night away at Hipping Hall. On arrival we were told that we had been upgraded to a lovely, large room overlooking the gardens. We were then served tea and cake in the orangerie. Dinner was a sublime, culinary experience. All dishes were perfectly executed; both tasty and beautiful. Afterwards we enjoyed more drinks in the cosy lounge and had a chat with the NZ head chef. All of the staff were very welcoming and attentive. Couldn't ask for better. We will definitely be back! Thank you all!!
