“Fabulous!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 October 2010

Another fabulous visit to HH. We stayed in room 6 (suite), huge room with separate living area, large bathroom and super comfy bed. Only one minor complaint – the room is above the kitchen/conservatory and it was very noisy the next morning when breakfast was being prepared. We’ve stayed in rooms 2, 4 and 6 and 2 is our favourite. Our evening meal was fantastic, the best we’ve had there yet and breakfast was also of the same high standard. Andrew has created a very welcoming and relaxed atmosphere at Hipping and the staff are friendly but professional. A fantastic place for a special occasion and in our opinion much better value for money than some of the country house hotels in the nearby Lake District.

This is a wonderful old building with loads of character sitting in well cared for gardens, a real find.
The dinner was fantastic, sublime flavoures produced by a quality chef served by first rate staff.....what a shame that they did not warm the plates, and the same chef was not on for breakfast. The dining room however is exquisite.
The bed was top notch, very comfy and with quality linens.
Most of the pictures hanging in the hotel are awful and are hung squint, fortunately there were none in our room,
The furniture in the lounge area is terrible, and carpets throughout need replacing.
Do not let this put you off, this place has real promise and curiosity alone will take us back.

stayed for one night for our ruby wedding anniversary as a surprise from my husband - Andrew's attentiveness was first class and he even upgraded our room at no extra cost as a gesture for our anniversary. Rooms of excellent quality and standard and bed was exceptionally comfortable. The food was 5 star with every detail supervised with personal attention, even the canapes and petit fours - all to an excellent standard in a comfortable atmosphere served in the lounge. Couldn't fault it - it was our first stay and hopefully not our last

We stayed in a cottage room (No 9) for 1 night. This was to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I had previously contacted the hotel to ask for a recomendation for a local florist. The flowers I ordered were excellent and the staff duly obliged and did not deliver the flowers to the room until we arrived.
As always we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. What makes Hipping Hall special is the welcome, fantastic dining room setting and standard of food.
We complimented the new chef Brent only to be told that he was having a night off. A true sign that the other staff are highly competent.
Staff do change but this is a problem with the hotel industry not an issue exclusive to Hipping Hall. What is apparant is that new staff are quickly trained to the standard expected by Andrew the owner.
When will we be back, simple answer we could live there if we could afford to do so.

Our third stay and as always a special treat. The service is attentive, personal and very easy going - nothing is a problem. The owner, Andrew and his staff, all make you feel very welcome. The rooms are lovely but it's the food that is the real WOW. Canapes in the lounge before dinner by an open fire and then you must try the taster menu with the wine package. Andrew knows his wine and being novices in this area, he explained expertly about each one which was great fun! Thank you all for another wonderful stay - see you next year for my birthday treat!

We stayed in a cottage room for 4 nights and ate dinner there every night. We rated the food at dinner and breakfast among the best of our experience in country hotels as well as in London restaurants. It is not as refined as a Michelin star would require but better for that in our view - great ingredients put together expertly and with imagination. There is a good wine list with fair prices and the owner-manager knows the list well. The breakfast menu is extensive and the food delicious. Service can be a bit slow in the dining room and some of the young staff are still learning - a bit of improvement round the edges is needed to enhance the dining experience beyond the food. However the attention to detail shown by the owner manager is impressive. The gardens are lovely and inside the hotel is attractively decorated. We had some initial niggles with the room - addressed with concern by the management but room inspection by a housekeeper would avoid some simply solved issues like a broken plug or the odd cobweb. The location is great - Kirkby Lonsdale is a lovely town worth visiting and the town/river walk including Ruskin's view and the church is a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. Our top visit in the immediate area was Ingleton Falls - you have to pay which is unusual in the Dales but it is a lovely walk. The hotel is small - no spa or anything like that but amenities are outside on the doorstep. The price reflects this and I thought the dinner bed and breakfast package was good value.
