The Enchanted Chocolate Mine

Recommended length of visit: <1 hour
Owner description: The Enchanted Chocolate Mine is a very small visitor attraction located beneath the chocolate shop in Kirkby Lonsdale. Aimed at children and the young-at-heart, this free attraction provides a quick insight into the world of chocolate mining. A short visit might only take 30 seconds but if you follow all the story boards you could be in the mine for up to 10 minutes. Now, a lot of you may be thinking that chocolate only grows on trees, and you'd be right to a point. But here at Kirkby Lonsdale we have been mining chocolate for many years. Actually the Faeries have been mining here for years, not us - but well, you can find all that out for yourself by visiting the history, community and geology pages. The Chocolate Mine is located at the foot of some steep stairs which might prove tricky for those who have mobility issues.

“Sweet shop but chocolate mine...”
Reviewed 8 April 2013

The shop is really sweet and has such a lovely range of chocolates and sweets. The chocolate mine is a nice attraction to look at BUT if you had specifically made a trip to go and see this attraction with your children etc then you may be disappointed. I do understand people saying to not take it seriously and we didn't as were just passing by so dropped in. I do feel the leaflets for this attraction are slightly misleading as it makes it out to be a far bigger thing than it actually is. Worth a little look but take it for what it is.

“Great Smell”
Reviewed 9 March 2013

You walk in the door and the smell of chocolate just hits you in the face. There are chocolates and flavoured liquires on every wall, the wiskey is down stair's in what I would call the old basement and below that is the chocolate mine, great for the kids to look at but mind your head.

“Stop being so serious - it's a bit of fun”
Reviewed 10 February 2013

We found the "mine" by accident. We went into the shop and whilst looking around saw the hard hats and the gate so we thought we had to venture into the mine!
It's big enough for 2 and takes about 30 seconds to see it all - hard hats are useful though as I bumped my head taking a picture!
Since coming home I've had a look at the website which does oversell it; however it's free, a bit of fun (especially for kids), totally tongue in cheek but definitely worth a very quick visit!!

“Great idea”
Reviewed 9 February 2013

If you are in Kirkby Lonsdale this is a must see..... The shop is quite small but what a great use of space. Put on your hard hat on and make you way down to the small mines (bit of a cramp but so worth it & the children just loved it). A really well thought out creative idea which is refreshingly free to see! The fantastic array of whisky, chocolate's unusual tea's & coffee's are just the icing on the cake. Brilliant...
