As an American living in Britain, I long for quality burgers and have repeatedly disappointed. British Burgers are stuffed with fillers. The actual meat is extremely difficult to detect. Not at the Black Bull. When you are served a burger there, you are served 100% beef! And I don't mean that what meat is in there happens to be beef. It was delicious and served with sauteed mushrooms and cheddar cheese. Hooray! After all these years, I can finally order a burger somewhere. Only problem is that I will have to save up for the treat. In addition, the staff was exemplary! The young woman who was tending the bar, taking orders, and serving was positively delightful.

We stayed at the Jolly Farmers and had very tasty breakfasts - we had two evening meals at the Black Bull - the food was very high quality cooked well - our meals ranged from barnsley chop to pork to steak to chicken in an unusual but tasty sauce -- vegetables were plentiful and cooked to perfection - service friendly and overall very good value for money

Stayed here twice, so clearly not put off by the soft beds. Otherwise, very happy. Room size was good, food in the pub downstairs excellent. Cheerful bar staff. Good value accommodation on the Coast to Coast walk.

Having eaten in pubs, hotels and B & Bs all the way from from St Bees, the food here was outstanding. Well cooked, well presented and served with a smile. Also the room is comfortable. Kirkby Stephen seems to be a good stopover point. NB home to pair of noisy parrots as well.

On our way to Bishop Aukland recently 4 of us stopped off at the Black Bull. The place was fairly busy so we decided to have lunch, the food arrived fairly quickly and it was delicious so when we passed through at the end of our weekend we all tried the Sunday lunch and were not disappointed the Roast Beef and Yorkshire pudding were wonderful.

Having been invited to a Golden Wedding Celebration, my wife and I decided to book an overnight stay, and after some research, decided on the Black Bull.
When we arrived, we were shown up to Room 4, which was very roomy, going from front to back of the building, with the En-Suite bathroom at the rear. the only downside - it`s two flights of stairs up to it, with rooms 1 to 5 on top floor, rooms 6 to 9 on first floor.
The Breakfast, after a good nights sleep, was excellent. Cumberland sausage at it`s finest. No lunch needed that day.
All in all, we were very impressed, as not knowing what to expect, we had a very enjoyable short stay. Thank you Black Bull.
