“Great trip with kids ”
Reviewed 8 November 2013 via mobile

We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights on a mid week deal which included some meals.
The hotel is gorgeous and the room was very large, it came complete with change mat, steriliser, bottle warmer and travel cot. All of which were handy.
The hotel is geared towards families and even has an onsite crèche.
We used the swimming pool during our visit which was lovely and clean which excellent changing facilities.
Both nights we ate in the conservatory with our 7 month old. The food is very good and the menu selection was wide.
At breakfast we also used some the baby feeding equipment provided. All very useful.

A few points which I feel could improve the hotel would be a way of serving child's meals before the adults meals, a few families seem to struggle at meal times getting everyone fed!
Also the rooms could included wipes/cotton wool which would be one less thing to pack.
Finally a mini tour/intro upon checking in would be useful, we were given a info pack but with a baby, a visual tour would have been useful.

A great stay though, we will definitely be back.

Hello Lucyann

Thank you for reviewing your stay with us at The Ickworth.

We feel we are unique in how we cater for families and like to be able to provide as much as we can so everyone can have a good time.

With regards to your point about dining times, we strongly recommend on our pre-stay emails that all meals are pre-booked to avoid disappoint on arrival should desired times not be available. The majority of our guests do this and are able to enjoy.
We have put some items in our room which you have suggested so thank you this. The tour may be somewhat difficult to accommodate however, as we simply would have enough members of staff to be able to do this (as much as we would like.) We can have quite a number of families checking in at the same time and logistically this just wouldn't be possible. We do include for all guests both in the main hotel and The Lodge with a detailed map of the house and grounds so they can easily find places.

Thank you again for your valuable feedback.

Michael

I didn't know this prided itself on being a family friendly hotel so felt as though I had walked into a creche. If you are allergic to children this is not for you. However the children are offered many attractions and are not allowed into the main restaurant in the evening so it actually worked out very well. The rooms are lovely - very big and ours contained if not the largest bed I have ever slept in, then undoubtedly the highest.Strangely the TV was situated at right angles to the bed which made watching awkward. The bathroom was a good size - but I have to say I never completely worked out the plumbing. Getting a hot shower was always pot luck - but the hot water was in there somewhere if you were persistent. The spa provided a perfectly adequate massage but is small and, unusually, nowhere near the pool. Due to poor weather, and it's distance from the house I did not sample the pool so don't know how good it is. The breakfast choice was a little limited compared to some hotels, but the food quality was good. The evening restaurant was very good - excellent beef dish one night and nice bream the next. The wine list was adequate. My only gripe is that I never signed after meals so it was sometimes difficult to reconcile the final bill. Reception staff were very helpful and friendly and the porter on arrival was a delight. The hotel provides free access for the national trust property attached - well worth a visit - particularly if you favour Downton/ Upstairs Downstairs sort of TV. The grounds are huge and magnificent. So my early misgivings disappeared across the two days and by the end I was sorry to be leaving. Given a repeat of the deal I was on I would very willingly visit this hotel again.

The hotel is in one wing of the National Trust property at Ickworth so is a lovely old building with masses of parkland attached. The hotel aims to be family friendly and certainly seemed to be catering for the children when we visited. The Spa centre is small, but perfectly functional in the basement. There's only massage and beauty treatments available - no sauna or steam rooms.
The lunch in the Conservatory restaurant was very nice, though rather slow to turn up. The staff were very pleasant and friendly though with a large child's menu

Thank you for your review of our spa and lunch at The Ickworth.

Unfortunately, when the hotel was been designed, there wasn't the opportunity to accommodate sauna and steam room but so our guests didn't totally miss out the spa treatment rooms where situated on the lower ground floor.

I'm glad that you enjoyed your day with us and thank you for your feedback.

We booked a room last minute, we have being coming to the hotel for 10 years and stay around 3 times a year for 2/3 nights.
We really enjoy our time here, it's relaxed but luxurious.
The bonus this time was been able to bring our 4 month old puppy. The staff as always were so welcoming in particular Robert a long term member of the team and Agnes a new waitress who always had a smile and was very efficient and kind.
They had made many changes and invested a lot into the hotel since our last stay. The new general manager is very on the ball and hands on you can notice the difference in the hotel immediately.
We always stay in the same room and it feels like our very own country retreat without the cost of the upkeep !
Our boys have a great time and this time our 14 year old who was with friends said " I wish I was with you I love the Ickworth " so that's a great recommendation he's been staying here since he was 2 years old.
With every stay anywhere there maybe things that need tweaking but this hotel cares and takes action on feedback. So well done to the Ickworth looking forward to coming back in January.

Five of us called in for coffee, we were greeted by a local Gentleman (what an asset) who proceeded to make out short stay a truly lovely experience, we were allowed to take in our well behave dog and three badly behaved relatives, the lounge was most comfortable and the staff a joy, will most definately return.

Room Tip: Just visit this out of the way oasis.

Horatio, I must say your review brought a smile to my face especially the comment regarding badly behaved relatives, you should have said, I'm sure one of our creche team could have put them in the naughty corner!
But seriously, thank you for your kind words. A lot of people think that the Ickworth Hotel is only open to residents, but as you point out you dropped in for coffee and yes indeed we welcome dogs too! The only place they aren't allowed in the public areas is the restaurants
Do let me know when you will be returning and I'll make sure the creche team are on standby!
Look forward to welcoming you again.

My wife and I have just returned from a two night stay at ''The Ickworth Hotel''.

To say we were disappointed is an understatement, the room although pleasant enough was a little on the small side and had a very limited amount of storage, even for a two night stay.

The food was, I am afraid to say quite abysmal, the breakfast would appear to have been prepared some time in advance and was served on cold plates and therefore the food was also luke warm to cold.

During breakfast on our first morning our ''cooked'' dishes were brought to the table whilst we were still eating our porridge (one of the better dishes at breakfast) and had to be returned to the kitchen to sit on a ''hot plate'', although that would be unlikely since the temperature on receipt of the plates would belie that assumption.

The candle lit dinner at Fredericks restaurant, was quite possibly the worst meal we have experienced in many years, with the exception of the parfait starter, the lamb being quite inedible.

The hotel staff were most helpful and efficient and a good proportion of the hotels appeal would be down to them.

Our intention was to experience this rather glorious building as the possible venue for a longer stay in the New Year, but this not even contemplated now.

It is most unlikely that we would venture here again.

Room Tip: Don't bother, try another venue.

We have just had a 3 night stay at the Ickworth Hotel and have come back thoroughly refreshed. The hotel is set in part of a former stately home and the architecture inside and out is beautiful, as are the extensive gardens and grounds. We had a lovely traditional large room on the first floor overlooking the gardens and our much loved dog was allowed to stay with us as well behaved dogs are allowed. The staff are friendly, helpful and nothing is too much trouble for them. For breakfast, there was everything you could wish for in terms of continental and English breakfasts, and it was served in a large and lovely conservatory. The evening meals served in the graceful surroundings of Fredericks were also absolutely perfect. During the day, we very much enjoyed taking advantage of the many walks available in the surrounding countryside, and it was also a pleasure to have guided tours of the adjoining Ickworth House which provided fascinating information on the history of the house and it's family. The final treat was a truly relaxing facial / massage and next time I would book more of the massages and treatments earlier on as they are booked up quickly and are definitely worth the experience. Overall, it was a truly delightful experience which we would highly recommend and where we hope to go back.

Room Tip: It is worth booking a large room as they are extremely spacious and special.

Jenny - how lovely to read your feedback on your recent stay with us at The Ickworth.

As mentioned in one of my previous responses to another satisfied guests, we have worked extremely hard over this last year to ensure that our guests have a stay to remember. Which it seems you did! Excellent!

I see that you're not too far from Ickworth - so perhaps we may see you on a day trip with your dog too!
