“A warm welcome and great value at the White Horse”
Reviewed 25 January 2007

Stayed for 2 nights during a cold spell in January, but the warm welcome more than made up for the temperature outside.

We had a standard room which we were warned was a little on the small side, but it was well decorated, very clean and had a refitted en-suite bathroom.

On our first evening we signed up for the wine tasting followed by dinner. It was enjoyable and v.good value. The second night we had dinner in the restaurant, but we could have eaten in the bar selecting from the same menu. Excellent meal, good choice of wines and cheerful service.

I had read the reviews here and looked at the hotel's website and it looked like an ideal place for a one night stay during a weekend in Norfolk, possibly with the intention of returning for a longer trip in future.

We arrived at 6.30 on Sunday evening to find the hotel in virtual darkness and the reception entrance locked. We found our way in through the bar however, so not a major problem, but didn't create a good impression.

In its favour, I'd say all the staff we encountered were very friendly. However, beyond that it was a very disappointing experience.

As the place is apparently renowned for its food, the bar meal I had (steak and chips) was surprisingly poor. The steak was ok(ish) but the chips were rock hard. The beer was nice though. We raised the problems with the hotel next day and they admitted they had had several complaints about the food and didn't charge us for the meal. They had, however, added several other meals and drinks to our room account which we hadn't had! Obviously this was corrected.

In terms of the room, the decor was nice and recently done and the bathroom very clean. However, the bed sheet was dirty, which we reported and we were offered a discount.

Although November, the weather was relatively mild, but the heating throughout the hotel was overwhelming! The room was too hot to sleep and the duvet on the bed was far too warm.

Sleeping was also rendered impossible by the group of noisy people somewhere close by who were shouting, singing and generally making noise until 3.45am!

The breakfast was, however, very good but spoilt, again, by the hugely over-heated breakfast room. The meal had to be rushed just to get out of the heat!

Blakeney itself is a rather dull little village with one nice shop. We may return again to North Norfolk to explore the coast and its wildlife, but don't think we'll be staying in Blakeney again.

We stayed at the White Horse on our pre-honeymoon honeymoon on 5th & 6th Nov 06 & took advantage of the half price rooms (Sun- Thurs/ Nov- Feb). We booked the Harbour Room (rm 1), a large suite-like room, with a brilliant view of the harbour (strangely enough) - you could sit up in bed in the morning and gaze out at the sea. We ate at the hotel (in the restaurant) on both nights and enjoyed the food immensly. Although we found the bar a bit smokey, it will apparently be non-smoking from Jan 2007. The only down-side was the reception area, which had not enjoyed the same TLC as the rest of the hotel & given the saying about first impressions, made us wonder what sort of place we had turned up at when checking in. Fortunately, the room and food made up for it 150%.

We stayed at The White Horse in June of this year and found it to be a very friendly pub, the food was fabulous with a good choice catering for everyone. The courtyard was a lovely place to sit and have a glass of wine and relax in. Our room was a good size and had a very comfortable bed it was also very clean. Being non smokers we found the bar area a bit smokey but what else do you expect in a pub. Overall an excellent place to stay.

Friendly staff and pleasant enough, but very very noisy. The disadvantage of being above a pub. OK but over-priced and a victim of the Norfolk, wannabe London syndrome.

Avoided the May Bank Holiday weekend, and stayed at the White Horse Mon & Tue (2 nights) - no problem getting accommodation.
Stayed in Bedroom No.1, looking down to the sea. Very large comfortable room with fine views (6 windows). Very comfortable bed and 2 superb large armchairs to watch the world go by (avoiding the odd flurry of rain).
Nice friendly bar (bit heavy with smokers though).
There are 2 food menus, with plenty of overlap - one for Bar Food (which is served in a very nice covered courtyard, very child-friendly - seemed to be plenty of families eating there who were staying elsewhere), and a more formal intimate Restaurant.
Breakfast was very good, many options including fresh smoked haddock!

A long time since we stayed, but lack of reviews prompted me to write. Back in 2003, stayed in one of the newer rooms at the back near the marshes, but also overlooking the car park. Room was very good. Clean, modern bathroom and good furniture. Food was also very good. One of the earliest local gastropubs.

Only downside here is difficulty in getting a reservation - my reason for not having been back.
