“Refurbished and refreshed with no loss of charm”
Reviewed 1 March 2014 via mobile

Just returned from an overnight stay at the Norfolk Mead, a birthday treat for my husband and a nostalgic return to the place we were married at 5 years ago. We loved it then and we love it now, the refurbishment is very tasteful and the food was excellent (recommend the octopus starter, venison and the banoffee sphere...wicked!). We had booked through secret escapes and there had been a bit of a mix up so I was anticipating disappointment but I should not have worried, everything was perfect. We were upgraded to the same suite we had on our wedding night and had chilled champagne brought to the room (chanterelle). Sadly the walled garden is now the site for a new extension, but the grounds at the front remain full of wildlife (husband was delighted to bump into the old gardener and hear about the otters, swans, kingfishers etc etc). Thoroughly recommend this hotel, it has been brought up to date whilst retaining its charm. We look forward to another return.

My husband and I have just returned from a one night stay at the norfolk mead, after booking through secret escapes. The staff were very attentive in every way, from the moment we got there to when we left. We had a very nice meal in the pleasant restaurant. We stayed in one of their suite rooms, which was to perfection! We cannot fault one thing, hoping to go back.

Room Tip: We stayed in the chanterelle suite, which was lovely!

We booked the visit through Secret Escapes and as part of the booking process the hotel emailed us asking if we wanted to upgrade to a deluxe suite, to which we said yes. The hotel then emailed back to say that they did not have the upgrade that they had offered but would we like an alternative, a cottage, at the the same cost as the unavailable upgrade, we said yes. We arrived early to be told that the our accommodation was not ready - we were aware that we were early but before we could open our mouths it was followed by a surly "booking in is not till 3 you know". We booking in which was problematic due to the fact that the "receiption desk" is located so that we were constantly in the way of guests and staff who wanted to pass. The accommodation was beautiful, the bed was extremely comfortable with plenty of pillows, the bathroom of the same high standard and the actual setting of the hotel is lovely. Unfortunately, from then on it went a bit downhill! The next day we went out and upon our return (3:30) we had not received any maid service. When my husand went to "reception" he was told they were short of staff and had had to concentrate on the rooms for the new arrivals. My husband pointed out that this was not his problem and it was then implied that as we had been upgraded to a cottage at no extra cost of the deluxe suite we had had a good deal all the same. So won't be going again that is for sure.

Room Tip: Stay in the main hotel

Weekend break courtesy of a Groupon Deal. We had Horseradish room which was small but cosy and functional with a small but modern bathroom. Only downside was the free wifi didn't reach this upper room. Staff were very cheerful and attentive. Food was excellent with a decent wine list. Only criticism was the menu whilst offering a reasonable number of options, the meat options were all red meat or game and could have been more varied. Book table time early for dinner to avoid having to take early or late option. A nice weekend, would recommend and would def go back.

If you are looking for a stay which is relaxing and friendly and provides exceptional food, then this is the place for you. We stayed on a two night, dinner, bed and breakfast basis and were made to feel very welcome, from the minute we arrived. As the hotel is small, the staff are able to treat you as individuals rather than simply another guest and they were a real credit to the hotel. We chose our room, Chanterelle, as it was one of the few rooms with a bath and a shower. We were on the first floor, above the dining room, and had a balcony which overlooked the river Bure. The restaurant produced some of the most delicious food that we have eaten in a very long time and in particular, the scallops for starters were fantastic! The location of the hotel is excellent for beach access (we visited Mundesley and Cromer), the Norfolk Broads (Wroxham is just a few miles away) and Norwich. We hope to be able to plan a return visit. Thank you very much to ALL the staff who made our break so enjoyable,

You arrive at this 17th Century Lodge via a quiet lane, which sets the peaceful tone for the weekend. Check-in is friendly and efficient. The room chic boutique, oozing quality bed linen and bathroom accoutrements. WiFi worked well which is always a bonus.

Pre diner drinks by the roaring log fire, before you enter the cosy dining room. The menu is full of articulately described country-style dishes. I chose goats cheese soufflé to start and Halibut for main. The wine list is reasonable. Poppy-seed and onion bread arrives with a balsamic vinegar dip – delicious. The soufflé was light and accompanied by nuts and chutney which combined was truly flavoursome. The fish was presented on a few stick-rolls of potato, beautifully cooked in a creamy sauce. To close I had hot treacle tart and clotted cream – lovely. This Chef really knows how to deliver flavours on a plate and blend them perfectly.

The bed was comfy and I had a good night’s sleep...helped by the wine. Breakfast was another artesian affair...homemade bread, fresh local quality ingredients all severed at a leisurely pace.

I don’t like to give a 5 star rating as no hotel is perfect. I tried really hard to find something wrong with this place...but all I could come up with is the bathroom didn’t have anywhere to rest my wash-bag and there wasn’t enough of that delicious main diner course...so I can’t be churlish on that evidence and have to give the Norfolk Mead a well deserved 5 star rating!
