“Disappointing”
Reviewed 23 July 2014

Booked this hotel for a short one night stay having been impressed by the reviews of this "boutique hotel". Well firstly, I would hardly call it a "boutique hotel" more like a pub with food and a few rooms. Its location is ok for the town and river walks etc but it right by the main busy London Road. As it was a warm night we had one of the large windows open so all the constant traffic noise throughout the night kept us awake. Additionally, at about 6am the local council road cleaning lorry came out and slowly cleaned the road outside the hotel. The rooms are large and the bed comfortable but its generally starting to become a bit scruffy. Curtains barely cover the windows! Bathroom again large with double walking shower. Only problem was that the shower had 2 temperatures, very hot and extremely hot, not great for the middle of summer.
We had dinner, a limited choice but we found stuff we liked. However, the roast lamb came with a £3.95 supplement and was offered with colcannon. This we chose but it was served with no colcannon and when this was pointed out to the manager he firstly said it was under the meat then went to the kitchen to check where it was. He return to say they had sold out but would take off the supplement!! The meal was entirely frozen and average at best.
Breakfast was a similar experience, we were offered the extremely limited continental breakfast at first until we enquired about a cooked one. When it came (very quickly) it appeared ok but when we began to eat it we discovered it to be microwaved, hence the quickness! The eggs were hard "fried", the bacon like cardboard and the sausages albino!
All in all a bit of disappointment.

Stayed on the 18th July (Friday) on a local business trip.
Ample parking and outside seating area. As you walk in the bar and restaurant look inviting and clean. Friendly staff to greet you and check you in. The room (5) was large clean and tastefully decorated with all the amenities needed, large bathroom with bath and separate shower. The room faces the busy road and really needs double glazed windows to tone down the traffic noise. The room also suffers from the late night revelers passing by but this is only to be expected from a town centre hotel. The only downside to room was the lack of a fan to cool the room in the exceptional weather conditions we were having, when I asked about one I was told that they only had two for the whole hotel and they had been allocated (I have six at home lol).

What really let the hotel down was the restaurant. First off the wait, ok so we didn't pre-book a table, but to wait an hour with the restaurant only half full. Tut tut. Didn't order a starter, as we didn't think we had time, ordered the Hungarian Paprika Chicken, WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT! Tasteless chicken with frozen chips, come on guys, do better.

Would I stay again, Yes. Would I eat there. No

Room Tip: Try and get a room away from the road if you are a light sleeper

Booked this Hotel for an over night stay while working local. Looked ok in the reviews but it was not what we where used to the bed was ok but all around the window was Black mould, a lot very off putting it took ages to get a drink at the bar people where walking out saying good look in getting a drink. We asked for a table for 3 to be told there would be a 20 to 30 minute wait Why ? there was only 4 people in and plenty of tables empty. We sat down sometime after the 30 minutes and ordered a meal that took over 30 minutes to come as well. 2 of us had Chicken paprika no taste at all was just watery Chicken and frozen chips the other lads meal was No better needless to say we didn't eat it all. Would never stay again.

Stayed here on 18th July for our 1st wedding anniversary and had a superb stay. We arrived around 2 o'clock to an afternoon tea which was amazing. Great collection on the afternoon tea and service for afternoon tea was spot on. Manager was very polite and the other work TOM was always there to offer help and assistance. We also stayed there for the evening meal which we had the gammon and rump steak off a special menu they had which was two mains for 16 quid! Well worth the money. Service was brilliant once again. As it was our anniversary the manager bought me and my wife a drink to celebrate. The room was lovely but we were in room 2 which is just above the front door so there was a bit of noise and it was very hot so we had to have windows open. We had booked in for breakfast which was a full English which was spot on. Lovely food again and plenty to choose from. So overall a excellent stay and we'll worth the money!! Thanks again and will hopefully be heading back soon!!

I regularly visit Thetford for my work and find the Thomas Paine Hotel ideal for my use, fabulously located a few doors away from Thetford Museum and 50 metres from the main high street. Its been under new ownership since 2013 and the owners have done a great job from the service to the décor. Rooms are large, clean and fresh.

Also Stopped here for lunch last month with some clients and must say the tea and sandwiches were excellent and ample. I recommend the cake stand selection!!!...delicious

Fantastic hotel we arrived after a long flight and train ride, but were welcomed by the manager and taken straight to our rooms and served room service within 30 mins. The rooms are big and spacious and probably the most airy and bright within the area. The hotel was very busy on the second night so we ate out and wish we hadn't. On our last night we dined at the hotel and was great food. We were in Norfolk for the asparagus season and they served this beautifully with poached egg and hollandaise, followed by salmon and local samphire. This place has come a long way as we stayed here whilst on business 3 years ago and vowed not to return, this time our company booked us in here and we are so glad they did. The new ownership is really pushing the Thomas Paine theme and so they should with so much history right on the doorstep. Well done guys and we will see you in sept.
