Firstly I have to comment on the staff, they were friendly, polite and helpful everything that you could ask for, in fact just brilliant. We took a two night break away on one of those cheap voucher deals so could not complain if the room in the older part needed some TLC. The breakfast that came with the deal was superb with a wide choice from the menu. The restaurant in the evening was pleasant, food excellent, reasonably priced with great waitress service. All I have to say well done "The Bell" give your staff a pat on the back - they deserve the praise.

Room Tip: Unless you are on a budget deal choose rooms in new block over looking the river.

We got avery good deal from Old English Inns(£9.95 each B & B) which coloured our opinions somewhat. However, comments about the un-englishness of Thetford are on the button. As regards eating, try the Deers Leap on the main road(you will pass it if you are coming from the north or east-its the yellow pub),we had a really nice meal there one evening.Would we return to the Bell?,yes if the price was right !!

after staying at other old english inns and finding them looking very tired,
we thought we would give it one more chance,
staff very helpfull, food nice but yet again the rooms let the place down,
ie wrotten windows, dirty walls, cobwebs and stains on carpet,
if money was spent they would have people comming back,
but untill they do we wont.

Room Tip: dont have room 215

It is difficult to compare a modern hotel with one dating back to the 1400s. We were in one of the oldest rooms, the one next door was one of the allegedly haunted ones. We didn't see the ghost!

The room was reasonably roomy, well fitted. I found the sink far too low for me, I am 6ft 2ins. We ate in the hote,l the food is not haute cuisine, just good honest food. Good choice generous potions and at a very resolvable price, especially if you took advantage of the daily offers.

Room Tip: Some rooms date back to the 1400s and the stairs could be a problem. If you have difficulty on stai...

I stayed for 1 night on a business trip.
The hotel on first apperance seem okay. However when I got to room - I was disappointed as these rooms are shown on the website.

They are plane and simple ( which isn't bad) but also not very clean there were hairs all over the room ( as per pictures) and the room was tired.

The walls are also very thin so I could hear evert thing the next room was doing - I only go to sleep when I put my headphones in.

The food on the menu sounds very impressive however it didn't taste the same. I had the surf and turf burger - which was a processed burger and the prawns were the ones you can buy from morrisons. Not as described in the menu.

That said the staff very nice - but that doesn't make up for the state of the hotel.

All in all I would never go back - instead go to the premier inn 5 mins up the London road.
