Owner description: Please bear in mind our opening hours are limited: 10am - 3pm Saturdays Easter to November & Tuesdays in Norfolk school holidays. Museum visits at other times by prior arrangement, subject to availability - we are a volunteer run organisation. For 9 years from 1968 Thetford, Norfolk became Walmington on Sea - home of Dad's Army. A guided location tour was launched in 2004 and proved so popular that a museum was founded in 2007. Housed in the Old Fire Station to the rear of the Guildhall - the building itself featured in several episodes as Walmington on Sea Town Hall - it is independently run by an enthusiastic platoon of volunteers. Over the years the museum has developed and expanded to include a 1940s inspired Marigold Tea Rooms. In 2010 a full size bronze statue of Captain Mainwaring was unveiled in the town by David Croft and in 2012 the original Jones's butcher's van returned home and is now residing with our good friends at Charles Burrell Museum, just a short walk away.

What a stupid boy!..We should have visited this little gem of a "museum"...or better described as a tribute to the cast and series of Dads Army much sooner! Located in central Thetford just a few footsteps away from one of the buildings used in the filming.....The Walmington on sea town hall...The Captain Mainwaring was excellent..posing for fun photos in the vicars office..even allowing Mrs .U.to sit on his knee for a photo!.....What would Mrs Mainwaring have said??
We enjoyed a cup of tea and cake in the Marigold Tea Rooms, then took the trail around Thetford for the locations of filming...a really lovely hour spent and the volunteers were really nice people..Well Done!!

Loved the local take on Dad's Army and the mementos of filming from residents. Free museum with volunteers that fully deserve the support of visitors. Make sure you visit whilst at Center Parcs or otherwise in the area. I asked to have my picture taken with Captain Mainwaring and he kindly obliged without calling me a "stupid boy".

Wonderful nostalgia. As I ambled through this lovely tribute to "Dads Army" what was most obvious was the love and care by the volunteers who have provided a real treat for those of us who appreciate such a feast of nostalgia. Real dedication to detail, a wonderful air of warmth and respect for a fabulous television series with the great team who gave us all such memories. The visit was completed by a cuppa in the Marigold Tea Room where lovely ladies had prepared war time treats. Thank you everyone. We thoroughly enjoyed your wonderful hospitality.

My friend lives in thetford we were just popping into town when we saw Jones' van. This caught our attention. We were lucky enough to visit when original cast members were present. It was a memorable visit.

The Dad's Army, T.V. series, was filmed in Thetford for 9 years, as Warmington on Sea. A relatively new museum, run independently by enthusiastic volunteers, with Bill Pertwee as the Patron. It is only open Saturdays,...10am. - 3pm.... Easter to November and Tuesdays in School Holidays.or by appointment.
Although small there is a lot to see relating to the series, housed in the Guildhall, which featured as Warmington Town Hall.
Entry is free..
.but a Guided Tour of where the location filming of 'Warmington-on-Sea' took place.. for which there is a charge, which also includes a visit to see recently acquired Jones's Butchers Van, which is housed in the nearby Charles Burrell Museum. a chance to sit beside 'Captain Mainwarings seated statue...... and Tea and a ' Wartime Recipe Cake' in 'Marigolds Tea Room.
Booking for the tour is necessary ...to book your place on the next tour OR arrange a private/group tour.......coach parties welcome.
.info@dadsarmythetford.org.uk OR phone ...01842 751975.
We went as a group and proved to be a most enjoyable experience, the 'staff' were very friendly and helpful..
.A Must for any Dad's Army Fan. and the tea room provided our group a chance to reminisce.
There were plenty of unique souvenir gifts of the show/museum.
