Owner description: Please bear in mind our opening hours are limited: 10am - 3pm Saturdays Easter to November & Tuesdays in Norfolk school holidays. Museum visits at other times by prior arrangement, subject to availability - we are a volunteer run organisation. For 9 years from 1968 Thetford, Norfolk became Walmington on Sea - home of Dad's Army. A guided location tour was launched in 2004 and proved so popular that a museum was founded in 2007. Housed in the Old Fire Station to the rear of the Guildhall - the building itself featured in several episodes as Walmington on Sea Town Hall - it is independently run by an enthusiastic platoon of volunteers. Over the years the museum has developed and expanded to include a 1940s inspired Marigold Tea Rooms. In 2010 a full size bronze statue of Captain Mainwaring was unveiled in the town by David Croft and in 2012 the original Jones's butcher's van returned home and is now residing with our good friends at Charles Burrell Museum, just a short walk away.

Well worth a visit and the nearby Charles Burrell museum where they keep Jones' Van from the tv series. Both are free and there is opportunity to see where different episodes are filmed around the town.

I visited recently this Museum and found it to be well worth the visit. I actually checked on the internet prior to my visit for the opening hours which were very clear to me so a recent comment very surprised me I recommend this to all specially people in the older age group as the television program's were very popular in there time

Nowhere on the advertising does it say that this is only open 10 to 3 on Saturdays between April and September. We travelled and found it closed.

We're really sorry that you have been disappointed. Any advertising for Dad's Army Museum clearly details that the opening hours are limited to every Saturday from Easter to November 10am - 3pm and Tuesdays in Norfolk school holidays. The museum is independently run by volunteers and this is why we are restricted in the opening hours that we are able to offer - the more volunteers that we are able to attract, the more we can open. We have come a long way since we opened in December 2007, when we opened just once a month. We raise all our funding, so there is no big marketing budget, however, it is very easy to research our opening times and a quick visit to either our website or a call to Thetford's Great Information Centre on 01842 751975 or even a quick google search would have easily clarified the information required before travelling. Please do contact us in advance at info@dadsarmythetford.org.uk should you be coming this way again - we would love to ensure that you get see the museum or maybe book one of our guided location tours? Finally, full details and a contact telephone number are located right at the front of the museum, so in the event of the situation described here, someone would have at least had the opportunity of explaining some of the alternatives whilst you were in Thetford. We hope that you can forgive us for your inconvenience and that it won't be long before we can welcome you back to Walmington on Sea!

This is a very interesting museum, information and photographs very well displayed, for those of us who where Dads Army fans, its lovely to see, and even those who weren't. Its run by volunteers who are always very helpful. Its a pity its not open more often. Captain Mannerings statue is also well worth a visit (down by the river)

Visited the Dads Army musuem on Saturday 24/05. Was worth the visit as we remember watching it back in the 70's. Run by volunteers who were very helpful and enthusiastic. Well done to them :-) Didnt see Jones van that day as it was away but visited Captain Mannerings statue.
A must for Dads Army fans!
