“Great place for a snack and a fantastic view of the Camel Estuary”
Reviewed 1 April 2013

I think that it’s quite imaginative of the Metropole’s owners to label their terrace area as ‘The Met’
It provides both a sense of modern style and segregates it from the more traditional reputation that the hotel has.
We stayed at the hotel for two days and it was apparent that lots of ‘chance’ visitors enjoyed coffee, afternoon tea or light bite meal in the terrace area.
The hotel has a fabulous location and ‘The Met’ is their terrace – the tables are in a relaxed area that enjoys floor to ceiling windows overlooking the Camel estuary.
A really pleasant stopping off place for Padstow visitors to enjoy a snack.

“Shabby and no longer chic”
Reviewed 29 March 2013

This hotel is well situated with panoramic views - very enjoyable were it not for the accumulated bird excrement on the large plate glass windows. We called in for coffee despite the already faded atmosphere we had found on a previous visit and and concluded that this once character hotel is decidedly now slowly sliding off its perch. Staff seemed detached but their attention was probably taken by ensuring they did not trip on the carpeting which is badly threadbare and worn in parts. Basic hygiene was not respected - our table was not wiped down and obvious crumbs left from previous diners went untouched by the staff. A housekeepers trolley and vacuum were parked in a main corridor at midday. Management need to wake up and start caring for their clients. Cornwall already has too many unemployed. To summarise a disappointing experience and extremely sad to see this icon of Padstow so shabby and no longer chic.

“Good quality, great service, pleasant atmosphere”
Reviewed 8 September 2012

The "Met Cafe Bar" as they call it has the same chefs preparing the food of course as in the restaurant but in an informal atmosphere. The fish platter I had was presented very well on a piece of slate. The crabmeat had a delicious flavour, and went well with the smoked salmon and prawns. My wife's mussels disappeared pretty quick too! The service was friendly and polite. We were just visiting for lunch, but having stayed here over the years on business and visited for lunch many times before whilst on holiday I can confirm that others comments about the slow service are true, but when here to relax......what's the rush?
It was with regret that I learnt that the previous longstanding General Manager had left a while ago. Still, I hope the quality and service continues as he had turned the place around from old-fashioned charm to here-and-now chic.

“Not Great Value”
Reviewed 18 July 2012 via mobile

Visited the Met today for a light bite arround half one. The hotel is in a great location and the views from the conservatory are magnificent.
The service from all the staff was excellent, they were friendly and professional.
We ordered 2 soups with rolls and goujons. However, these took half an hour to arrive which was a bit long given what we ordered, and one of the waitresses agreed when she cleared our plates. The soup was thick and tasty, and the cod was ok if not a little tasteless but well presented with a nice side salad. However, the portions were incredibly small- 3 small goujons for £6.95. A customer at another table complained about the size of his main course (also the cod).
So, overall, although the food was fine and the location great, i don't think it was worth the price. I would be more inclined to return for a proper meal and the hotel itself but not a light lunch.
