“Best pub food in Padstow”
Reviewed 19 May 2014

Having picked up our aunt at Bodmin station on the Monday before May Day, we made our way to Padstow, and tried to find somewhere for lunch at 3 o clock. Lots of places had finished serving food by then, so we made our way to the old ship because I had looked at their menu on the internet, and found it interesting. Fortunately they serve lunch until 5! The staff were extremely helpful and chatty and the service was great. I can't praise the crab enough. It was so fresh and so plentiful. Everything everyone ordered was also fantastic, like the chips, the salads and the chicken burger. Probably the best and the best value meal we had in Padstow, and that includes Rick Steins.

We were staying at Rick Steins and had eaten there the previous evening. We were wandering around Padstow thinking where shall we eat when a down pour and fate saw us take shelter in this pub so we decided to eat here. What a pleasant surprise the food was fantastic. The salmon rivalled anything we had the previous evening at a smallproportion of the cost. If their accommodation is anything like their meals the rooms must be excellent. A very pleasant evening indeed.

Pub/hotel/restaurant in the centre of Padstow, with its own parking, so VERY convenient and the prices reflect this.
Friendly and helpful staff. Rooms are clean and adequate, but not large and can be a bit noisy: can easily hear TVs in adjacent rooms and sometimes noise from the bar (was not a problem for us).
WIFI did not reach our room, and the wifi and internet access is generally poor - based on comments we heard from other guests and the struggles we had, even in the bar. It is probably not helped by the password/security system, certainly Apple devices could not remember the password - tedious!

The bars and restaurant area has been very recently refurbished and is very nice, though a little characterless. There were a lot less locals in the bar than in previous years, maybe the bar prices were a partial cause, OK but slightly more than some of the other town centre pubs.

Restaurant is good pub standard. Breakfast usual standard for room price (not brilliant, but no complaints at all).

We'll likely return.

3 night stay over the Padstow obby oss celebration period. Normally we would have stayed in a hotel about 2 miles away. I am well past the 75 year old mark, have arthritis and a dodgey ticker and I seem to tire easily, occaisionally needing a nap to recharge the batteries,so, we opted for a hotel in the town,a lot easier to walk in off of the street, pick up the room key and toddle off for a nap if required instead of having to walk up to the car park which is an effort in itself having a gradient of about 1 in 6 on cobbles plus 2 flights of steps.then be driven to a hotel, and having to return to town later, the cost is high but it was money well spent.
Ps' and Cs', ie Pros and Cons, as I see it.
Ps'the hotel has a private off road car park.
Cs The car park is much higher up the hill than the hotel and the footpath/steps descent is quite steep. We did not take any luggage to the reception as we arrived long before we could check in, intending to go for a walk round the town.
Ps', the receptionist was not phased by our early arrival, cheerful and friendly, advised us our room had been serviced and a quick word with a young male member of the staff and we were off back to the car, collected the luggage and the fellow carried the big suitcase.to the hotel
Ps' this routine was carried out in reverse on our departure.
Cs' our room was on the 2nd floor.
Ps' We had a lovely view over the rooftops to the Camel estuary and the village of Rock on it's far shore.
Ps'..The room size was adequate and clean as was the en suite with a good shower.
Ps' The hotel is family owned and all the staff are friendly and cheerful.
Ps' breakfast was tasty and enough on the plate.
We expect to be in Padstow for the 2015 May day celebration, and despite the climb, will be looking to occupy the same room with the view.

great location, very helpful staff, but padstow is really london prices and really expect a better room for in excess of £100, it was clean, small, small ensuite, very noisy during the night, could hear someone snoring next door i guess, could hear the other room talking, breakfast mediocre english breakfast, so overall ok, wifi not available in the bedrooms

A very warm reception, comfortable rooms, an invaluable car park, slightly marred by indifferent breakfast with compulsory breakfast tv and very poor wifi, but all in all a really enjoyable place to stay. Such charming people, eager to help in every way.

Have eaten and drunk in here many times but never stayed before. check in not great as despite ringing bell we had to go and find someone from behind the bar. The room no 7 was immaculate and large also surprisingly very quiet. Bathroom the same. convenient small fridge in the room for our wine. It was mega expensive but we knew this, even so I expected at this price some clean towels between nights. Breakfast only ok. my scrambled eggs were cold and no warmer for warming up. Staff very friendly and courteous.

Room Tip: If you want a nice view do not use room 7
