“A rose among thorns”

Have eaten here twice in the past 12 months and very much enjoyed it. Accommodating staff and good nosh make it a great venue, especially considering how few decent places there really are for lunch in Padstow.

“Padstow Gem”
Reviewed 26 July 2014

Another great set of basement meals. Consistently the best restaurant in Padstow for food and value for money. Easily as good, if not better, than the "name" establishments. Both dinners were excellent with a mention for the pigeon and ox cheek! The wine list is refreshingly well priced compared to other local establishments. The recently added outside extension is an excellent addition. Special mention for the breakfasts, good choice of menu with very nice outside seating.
Highly recommended

“Al Fresco Redefined”
Reviewed 25 July 2014

As a lover of Padstow, and more so fine food.... I was very much looking forward to another sunny break in Cornwall - and both the weather and food didn't disappoint!
I was looking forward to seeing The Basements new outside seating area and I must say it's made a sensational difference. The area isn't simply levelled, but the addition of fixed and adjustable screens keep out the breeze whilst allowing you the full benefit of the warm Cornish sun.
And comfy sofas at the front are the perfect spot for a cold white wine and bit of people watching!
Onto the food, beautifully cooked asparagus starter with a soft poached egg was light and delicious, my partner opted for cod on a chorizo risotto which oozed as it sat on the plate, flakey creamy cod and the spice of the chorizo is a perfect marriage of flavour.
I went for ox cheeks as a main as I can never find them in supermarkets and I love them! Slow cooked they fell apart like a wet cake - gorgeous, all wrapped up in a red wine jus on earthy creamy mashed potato - yum. I think my partner wanted to try some but she wasn't quick enough.
As always I chose the cheesecake for dessert, creature of habit, and it was a sweet end to a lovely meal.
Staying local we chose to wash it down with a local Camel Valley Bacchus which does the county proud, chilled and very easy drinking. I also recommend the Knightor if you're a bit bored of the Sauvignon Blanc revolution.
There's lots of foodie competition in Padstow but it's great to see The Basement still striding out in front both on flavour and price.
Keep it up!

“Excellent food”

Really nice restaurant. Best to eat in the newly-solidified outside area which is enclosed. Excellent fish and really cheerful staff.
