Our first impression on arrival was not good, with litter and cigarette butts under tables, and the outside areas and car park in need of a tidy up. Inside, the decor could also do with sprucing up a bit but the pub is owned and operated by local residents and I guess the margins are relatively tight. We had booked in advance for three nights and were shown to our room on arrival but a few instructions would have helped, e.g. resident access via a back door, breakfast times and how to use the TV + digital receiver, etc. The room was a good size and even though it was at the front of the bulding, noise was not a problem after 11.00 p.m. Service at the bar and dinner were good and even better at breakfast and all of the satff were very friendly and accommodating. There was a good atmosphere without being too lively, even when there was live music. The quality of the drinks, food and portion sizes were all very good. I can highly recommend the trio of fish, liver and bacon, and cheese board. The Tuesday set meal (steak, gammon or fish), plus bottle of wine and live music deal was particularly good.
