We had the Lyme bay mussels with monkfish tails and it was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS.

The owner is a really nice guy who gave a warm, friendly welcome without being too familiar.

Lovely place for a meal, or just a drink.

We'll be back!

I have always loved the Railway - kept for special occasions. Went for my younger daughters birthday at her request.

We ate in the restaurant rather than bar area. Have they crammed in more tables? What is going on? Whole experience was rather like eating on a train (excuse the pun) narrow corridor between the tables and little space between the chairs from other tables - obese lady behind my husband took up all the room and her could barely move. Waitresses pushing back and forth past the tables. The noise level was incredible, we could not hold a conversation.

Food sadly disappointing, and over priced. Left without desert and went to buy some from Tesco and ate at home in the quiet and space.

Mmm, spend £80+ on starters and mains or eat at home next time? Home wins.

We (3 adults) started out with a drink at the bar - I had a Strawbery Prosseco which was really refreshing in the heat of that evening. We were shown to a good table. We had 2 starters, 3 mains, 2 puddings, a bottle of wine, 1 beer, 3 drinks, and the bill came to just over £100. So, around £35 each which is good for the quality of the food, the presentation, and the ambience of the place. It's very tastefully decorated, and quite comfortable, not noisy, tables aren't too close together. The service was good, although the young waiters/waitresses weren't totally hip on what dishes comprised, etc., but they were charming. The specials board is brought to you, as is the puddings one.
No dedicated parking, but there are side roads just up from the restaurant where you can park.
Recommend booking as it is a popular place. For good reason!
Well worth a visit.

We recently went to the Railway for dinner and thoroughly enjoyed it!

The service was superb from start to finish and we were so well looked after, even though it was packed in there (This was a Tuesday evening!) The food was simply delicious!

Highly recommend it

We stay in East Devon quite regularly, and even though you are spoiled for choice in this part of the country when it comes to great food, we always try and ensure we eat in the Railway at least once. Great atmosphere, fantastic food, lovely staff. What more can you ask for?
