Just Superb. Classic setting, yes the hotel isn't one that's had millions spent on it making it perfect in every way, the rooms are a little 'country house faded' but that's part of its charm. The restaurant is simply my favourite eating place anywhere. Beautiful dining room with a quiet elegance, stunning food, just fantastic. Marcus West's review pretty much spot on really.

Hazelwood is a home from home. It's a graceful, very peaceful house, set in its own wonderfully quiet deep Devon valley. It makes for a lovely retreat: a place to come back to yourself - that's my experience of it at any rate. The rooms are clean, simple and spacious and there's some really good food. You can relax on the veranda or in the drawing room, and make friends with the friendly house cat and dog.
It's not a conventional hotel: so if you're looking for super-smooth corporate style service with minibars and wifi and all the rest of it, Hazelwood isn't for you. Some of the rooms don't have their own bathroom (which doesn't bother me at all - instead you can have a proper bath in a nice spacious bathroom down the corridor!).
It's run alongside various charitable activities dear to the owners' hearts - mainly focused around peace, arts and spirituality - and Hazelwood is in some ways as much about that as it is about being a hotel. So if you think of it as a peaceful, heartful retreat, with wonderful views and a sense of deep calm, with some yummy food and wine too, then you'll be on the right track and probably have a wonderful stay!

Room Tip: A view of the valley.

Having visited Hazelwood House before, we wanted to take our son and daughter-in-law for dinner. We were not disappointed. We arrived to a warm welcome, sat in a very comfortable sitting room while we chose our menu.
All members of the party enjoyed their food and 2 of the party are really fussy!! There was just the right time between each course being served with good sized portions.
This is not a restaurant for those wanting glamour and lights and canned music.
We are definitely going again as we like 'something different' as the dining room is not large therefore it is a more intimate dining experience.

Room Tip: We just visited the restaurant

We (myself, wife and 2 year old) stayed here for my brother's wedding.

Nice place in the country, very remote with no mobile phone signal (a good thing). The staff were great and the wedding itself (dinner, ceremony, evening drinks, etc) was carried out really well.

The rooms are a little dated and lack hot water (assume that was due to everyone getting ready for the wedding at the same time) - but overall happy with Hazelwood...:)

We stayed at this hotel as part of a wedding group. Everything from the wedding ceremony, dinner and reception was carried out here. Overall, everyone was very happy with the accommodation, food and service. The staff gave you the feeling that they enjoyed their work and were invested in ensuring a good customer experience. There was no wifi and intermittent mobile phone coverage; whether that is good or bad depends on the individual.
The fixtures and fittings were quite old and suffered from some wear and tear as a result. Gaps in carpets etc. We had an on-suite that was small but functional. You have to remember that this is a very old building and that on-suites are very much an after thought. Some rooms do not have an on-suite. Everything was very clean, no complaints there. The food and service for the wedding dinner was excellent. Gathering around the log fires in comfortable surroundings added a nice touch to the weekend. The breakfast was also excellent and flexible; if you wanted more bacon, you got it.

A most unusual place in today's expectation of hotel accomodation. Very welcoming relaxing atmosphere with excellant food situated in a beautiful part of Devon. For something out of the ordinary with great chill out factor. Have been a couple of times & will return.

Stayed for a few nights in 2012. Lovely isolated location overlooking a wooded valley. Relaxed atmosphere and very friendly staff. Building full of character, dog friendly and great for local walks. Nice grounds to relax in and interesting artwork.
