“A very pleasant night away”
Reviewed 13 September 2013

We enjoyed a night away at this delightful spot on Dartmoor with parents. The grounds and surrounding area are wonderful. The bedrooms have recently been refurbished and are now colourful and charming. We had a huge shower in a beautifully presented bathroom. Food was good and not overpriced for an hotel. Breakfast was tasty and well presented with a nice choice from the cold buffet and cooked to order for hot.
We would certainly re-visit.
We did have an excellent value deal from Travel Zoo so not sure what the full rate was

We booked the Moorland Garden Hotel for a 2 night stay via a booking site. Unknown to us, shortly after we made the booking, unknown to us, the manager had been fruitlessly trying to phone to warn us that there was a wedding occurring at the same time as our stay. On arrival, the manager announced that he had placed us in a room at the furthest reaches of the hotel, so that we were not disturbed. As it happened there was a different wedding on both nights we stayed and we were not unduly disturbed. My only comment was that the doors to the rooms required that they had to be slammed in order to be shut properly and being that there is little sound insulation, every time a door was slammed shut in our corridor, we jumped. Luckily this was not constant. I would suggest prospective guests check whether there is a wedding coinciding with their stay. All the same it was nice that the manager showed concern enough to move us to a quite room.

Dear pcgrowler,

Thank you for your kind review following your stay with us earlier this month, I was very pleased to read that we were able to look after you relatively undisturbed by the weddings we were hosting.

I am grateful, too, for the feedback regarding the bedroom doors taking a little more effort to close than normal, I will ask my Maintenance Manager to investigate this as a matter of urgency.

I hope we will be able to look after you both again in the future, do please keep an eye on our website for the best offers available.

Stayed the night after a wedding here at the weekend and really enjoyed the stay. The hotel is in lovely grounds it was just a shame we had to get back home the next day so did not have time to explore.

The bed was so comfy and i wish I stole the pillows! such a nice sleep, quiet rooms despite the wedding going on which is nice especially if you are a guest there whilst a function is going on. Would look to stay here again if in the area and the price was right.

Forgot toothbrush but luckily you get one in the room! breakfast was decent for a buffet style and for no more cost there was an option to order cook to order food such as poached eggs, a nice touch!

Room Tip: We managed to get upgraded so always worth checking the suites are lovely!

Dear AzzaJP

Many thanks for your kind review after your stay here recently, I was very pleased to see that you enjoyed your all too brief visit to the hotel. Yes we do have some lovely grounds, hopefully on another visit you will be able to explore more both on site and around Dartmoor and into Plymouth.

Glad we could help with the toothbrush! This one was part of the suite standard but we do carry spares of almost everything at reception just in case!

We always do our best to give those who need a good nights sleep a quieter room, we are generally able to keep the event guests in the rooms closer to the ballroom so making it better for everyone else. We have made every effort to improve the sleep quality in the hotel so I am especially pleased you found everything so comfortable - and thank you for leaving the pillows behind!

Do keep in touch with us as we do have offers out regularly through the year so do please come and stay again when you are able.

Regards

We stayed here on a Travelzoo deal on a Friday night. When booking we were warned that there would be a wedding in the hotel at the same time but we decided to risk it! And we ere really glad that we did. The day was a lovely sunny day & when we arrived the wedding party were having photo's & drinks in the garden & that was the last we heard of them! The function room is at one end of the hotel & we were thoughtfully housed in the wing at the other end so didn't hear a thing. Our room overlooked the garden & was nicely furnished (although there was a slight whiff of old smoke as we went in - presumably the distance from reception meant that a previous occupant had taken a chance!) The only small criticism with the room would be the bathroom. It a wonderful walk-in shower but at the expense of room around the loo - which was very cramped!

Our deal included a 2 course meal & we weren't disappointed. We enjoyed our 2 courses so much & the puds looked so nice, we gave in & upgraded to 3 courses! Service was exemplary - despite the wedding going on (& we still couldn't hear this even in the dining room!)

Breakfast was good - although as we came down a bit towards the end of the breakfast time, things were beginning to run out. However, there was still plenty to feed us up for the day ahead.

A very good stay - we will be back!

Room Tip: If you are warned that there is a function on ask for one of the rooms at the end of the other wing...

Dear superdv,

Thank you very much for your lovely review following your recent stay with us. I am very pleased the news of the wedding did not deter you from coming and that it did not disturb your stay, your tip for future guests is a good one!

I am glad, too, that you enjoyed the hotel and the restaurant. We do like our new bathrooms and thank you for the advice that the space was a little tight, we will bear this in mind when we are working on the last few bathrooms.

We have worked hard on our food and our restaurant and it is very pleasing to see that this is being well received.

Thank you again and we look forward to seeing you at the hotel soon.

We had a family get together for a long lunch. Very nice hotel, very pleasant and efficient staff, food was excellent. There was also a wedding going on, who seemed very happy.
Easy to find, extensive grounds, lots of parking.

Recommended for a function - we did not stay overnight.

We often come for lunch here and have commented that the bar seems understaffed, resulting in less than perfect service but our most recent visit was particularly disappointing due to what would appear to be this same issue, resulting in three of us waiting for nearly an hour for our food. In the end we gave up and left.
There was a wedding in another part of the hotel and possibly the staff were trying to cover that and the bar, but whatever the reason, the outcome was three unhappy customers who are reluctant to return.
The food is very good as is the venue, management however need to take note and recover the situation before it becomes another venue in the area to give a miss.

Dear LindyLou854,

Thank you for your review following your visit for lunch yesterday. I do apologise again for the poor service you received. It does seem that we were a little stretched yesterday with our service staff which did lead to more of a wait than we all would have liked.

After my conversation with you yesterday we had already started to review our procedures so we can make this a thing of the past and we have had more discussions today to make our systems better.

While we know we will never be instantaneous with our food as it is all prepared to order we do need to make sure we deliver in an acceptable time frame.

We do hope yuo will give us another opportunity to show how we have learnt from this incident.

Regards

Altogether, a perfect wedding! Guests travelled from all over the country to attend, and thoroughly enjoyed the fantastic service and beautiful day. Many guests stayed for more than one night in the hotel and it was not regretted. Gorgeous meals, great staff and beautiful weather were just a few factors of the day which made our trip so enjoyable. We absolutely loved the fun, unconventional entertainment such as the photo booth and sweet table. Many people went into making this day so special, but the staff on hand were so lovely, they made the day run very smoothly. Everything arrived on time, including the cake, flowers and our delightful lunch. The service was impeccable and nothing was too much to ask, very helpful, lovely people made our day feel comfortable and stress-free. The facilities were not just guest friendly, but dog friendly too. Many families brought their beloved pets with very little worry. The children loved it and were happy running around all evening, the hotel staff were understanding and polite which really added to our enjoyment of the trip. We will be coming again!

Room Tip: Ask to be positioned away from the function room if you are a light sleeper.
