“Good place to come for a casual lunch”
Reviewed 15 August 2014 via mobile

Came to meet a friend for lunch in the bar area and was impressed by the choice of healthy, hearty and colourful lunch options. Pleasant ambience - a bright and relaxing room - plus fast service and reasonable prices made this a perfect venue for a gossipy lunch. Plenty of parking, clean loos, fresh flowers: a thoroughly civilised choice.

Great value. Room was clean and comfortable - although in need of updating which is obviously work in progress. Bathroom had been refurbished and was very nice but no self for your wash bag! The evening meal was excellent and the service superb. The 2 young men and young lady at the evening service gave excellent customer care as did all the staff but they were particularly of note. There was a wedding in the hotel and the guests were rather noisy going to bed but soon settled down. Some of the public areas of the hotel again need a bit of an uplift. Certainly would return as with the staff on board and a bit more of investment in the decoration it will go from strength to strength.

Room Tip: Without the wedding it would have been quiet - it did not spoil our stay. Had a nice room overlooki...

The hotel is in a lovely spot on the edge of Dartmoor, just off the main road between Plymouth to Tavistock but you cannot hear the road. Ground are well looked after and the rooms overlook the garden. Food for dinner and breakfast is very good. The only down side is the rooms which are a little dated. Staff are very helpful and friendly.

Dear rawianne,

Many thanks for your kind review following your stay last month. It was a pleasure to read how much you enjoyed your time with us. We put a lot of emphasis on our staff and our food so it was great to see that they were well received.

We are working on a schedule to upgrade the bedrooms, our newly decorated rooms are stunning and we are looking forward to them all being done in due course.

I hope you will be able to come back and see us again soon.

Stayed for 3 nights on the Summer Sensation deal, £99 a night for dinner, bed & breakfast.
Excellent location at the edge of Dartmoor and well signposted from the main road. Plenty of parking and complete with ponies and sheep at the end of the drivewaw, We were over the moon to discover we had been upgraded to a superior suite for the 3 nights at no extra charge. Great nights sleep in a large comfortable bed. Excellent buffet breakfast with plenty of choice. The only downside for us was that the dinner menu did not change for the 3 nights and we were told it was also the same the previous evening. There is a limited choice of dishes and, like a previous reviewer, we are not fussy eaters but we also had reservations about each dish. We did ask for alternative vegetables and this was agreed however for us personally there were just not enough vegetables with our meal (eg 5 small green breans) However, this is just our opinion and may well suit the majority of guests. All staff were very polite and helpful and there was free Wi-Fi in the room although the reception was sometimes poor. We would definitely stay again due to the excellent location, staff and value for money.

Dear Sharpcon,

Thank you for your positive review following your stay with us earlier this month, I was pleased you had been able to take advantage of our special summer offer and were able to make the most of our fabulous location on Dartmoor.

I do appreciate your observations on the dinner menu, we are still working out how to find the best balance between variety and consistency. We will look again at the amount of vegetables with each dish.

Our wifi is under review at the moment, we are looking at options to upgrade so we can provide a fast service to all our guests - our limitaions may be down to our location at the moment.

Do please keep an eye on our website for future offers, we'd love to welcome you back to the hotel soon.

Set on the edge of Dartmoor in a beautiful location. The hotel has also undergone some renovations. We had our Boxing day lunch here, the food was of an excellent standard with some light entertainment to boot. Service was also professional and efficient. Overal we had an excellent meal and afternoon, and at a very reasonable price

We have just stayed in this beautiful hotel overnight . Everything about it was just lovely, from the lady who greeted us on the desk to the dapper batman to the absolutely wonderful restaurant staff both last night and this morning. I would recommend this place to anyone . The food was exceptional and I'd just like to add that our male server made us feel very welcome and at ease . Can't fault the place at all .

Room Tip: We were in a basic room which was lovely , but will try an upgrade next time to see the better rooms...

The hotel is set well back off the main road on the edge of Dartmoor and ideally placed for a pre-dinner stroll or longer walks across the moor. We only stayed one night on the excellent 'Summer Sensation' deal for Dinner, B&B (£99). We upgraded to a balcony room though which was an extra £20. The views and generous sized seating area made this well worthwhile. We had a friendly welcome and although the hotel is undergoing an update this had no impact on our stay.
The room was a good size, clean, comfortable and well decorated. The bed was a bit small (according to my wife but I was out like a light). The only blot was that the large 'feature' plant pot on the balcony was full off cigarette butts and looking down from the balcony it seemed most plant pots were ashtrays too, not in keeping with the general style or standard the hotel.
Dinner was very good. The menu was varied with several tempting options. Classic dishes with a modern twist but without pretension, and most importantly, packed with flavour. The duck rillettes and goats cheese panna cotta starters were great and the main of cod with beetroot risotto was excellent. Polished off with chocolate torte, a fine cheeseboard and coffee. Very good standard and very good value too.
The breakfast buffet was also good and set us up for the demands of a day walk across the moor. Delicious real sausages too. The only downside (and this really is personal opinion) was having to listen to Simply Red as we ate (not just one song, which normally would have me running from the room, but a whole album). Much as I love sausages I really didn't know whether the eat them or stick them in my ears. A very enjoyable stay and likely to be back.

Room Tip: Go for the balcony upgrade in summer.

Dear Jamie E,

Many thanks for your delightful and helpful review following your stay with us last month. I was very pleased to see how much you both enjoyed your stay and how well you found the hotel, the location, feel and the food. Thank you, too, for your observations on the cigarette butts, we have housekeeping on the case now and will be keeping a much closer eye on this in the future.

It is also really useful to have an alternate view on the hotel, we would not have picked up on the music during breakfast - some training on how to use the shuffle button is on the cards! We did like your comment about your dilemma with the sausages!

We'd very much like to see you back with us, do please keep an eye on our website for our future offers.

Thank you again,

Andrew Jenkins
