“What a deterrent to be faced with imprisoment here”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

The stark dark granite walls of Dartmoor prison in Princetown, rise up steeply from the grassy slopes below. Who can imagine being improsoned here when it was first built, let alone now. Built to contain the prisoners from the Napolionic wars, it is still a foreboding place, brooding on the hillside. A must to see.

“Great on a rainy day”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 February 2014

Value for money only £3 each, great way on filling an hour, when it was pouring with rain. Very interesting to know the history of the prison.

“Official Opening of the Victorian Reservoir Nature Trail”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2013

Yesterday morning, 23rd July, I visited the Dartmoor Prison Heritage Centre in Princetown, Devon. What a fascinating and truly original museum. Artifacts abound from the time the gaol was a War Prison containing French and American Prisoners of War during the Napoleonic War in the early 1800's to more recent times after it became a Convict Prison in 1854. Many of the items on display were actually made by the prisoners themselves, from things of beauty to items of brutal violence, ie homemade knives and guns.
There is also a large selection of agricultural machinery that was used on the prison's own farm.
Outside, we witnessed the unveiling of the information plaque denoting the offical opening of the refurbished Victorian Reservoir and a brand new Nature Trail which is open to the general public. Nearly 60 prisoners helped over the last two years to clean out the old reservoir and plant hundreds of tees. Well worth a visit.
