“Better than expected after recent reviews”
Reviewed 7 July 2014

Stayed here when it was 1 Lyme and it was a great place to stay. Booked for the weekend just gone without realising it had changed hands and was now Hix, and then read some really awful reviews and was worried! Pleasantly surprised, Lorraine rung us on route to see what time we were likely to arrive and to make sure we were aware of the after hours arrival routine if needed. We needed to ring the emergency number to ask a question and it was answered straight away. We were in 4, which they had told us on booking was the last to be refurbd, nice bright airy room, with seperate sitting area, a little tired as expected but spotlessly clean, comfy bed and a view from bed of the sea. Yes you could hear next doors bathroom on occasion but this is an old houses not a new purpose built hotel. Breakfast..... Interesting, work in progress, muesli (bit like marmite you either love it or hate it!) should really be given a choice, a point the receptionist made a note of when I commented on check out, Pastries nice but a bit cold by the time they arrived and a scotch egg although tasty a bit random for breakfast. One day fresh strawberries and raspberries very nice, next day a small portion of raspberries and 2, yep 2 cherries?!? Would have been better left out. Generally at £165 per night a bit overpriced.

Basically, the owner of this bed and breakfast needs to re-think his vision and either spend some time sleeping in this property or listen to his critics.
Before I list my constructive comments, I want to commend the two manageresses of this establishment, Viv and Lorraine. They were so welcoming and helpful; many thanks for your input. You are a great asset to the company.
Okay, here goes.....
This is a very expensive B&B and, as my friend and I chose Suite 7, we are in a good position to assess if it warrants that cost.
For some bizarre reason, the owner recently decided to redecorate ( what was to me and my friend a lovely looking suite on the website when we originally booked some months before, ) with a hunting theme (despite being a few yards from a busy bay and beach resort!!!)
Consequently, the living room of the suite is now dark red, oppressive (where on earth did you find that ugly three piece suite???) and not particularly comfortable; certainly not in the mornings when one is faced with a large hamper and no suitable table (just a coffee table) on which to place the breakfast items. Contrary to the website description, we did not have a selection of warm pastries and fresh fruits. For £10 per person, there was one warm sausage roll each (who on earth chooses sausage rolls at 8 in the morning??) and a small, cold chocolate American muffin (who on earth chooses a chocolate muffin at 8am??), a tupperware of pleasant muesli and a small tupperware of fresh, chopped strawberries just about enough for two people, oh yes and one small tub of yoghurt each. I must add that there is access to a kitchen with bread and a fab high tech toaster available 24/7.
The bedroom, thank goodness, was still mainly white in decoration as it is a windowless room but with etched glass doors to the living room and shower room, and has a wonderfully comfortable bed with gorgeous, expensive crisp white cotton bedlinen. Unfortunately, the bed is metal to look like luggage straps and the end legs stick out far enough to trip me up every time I passed!!! The T.V., placed on a console table, in this room did not seem to work but even if it had, due to the bar at the foot of the bed, the screen is obliterated when one is lying in bed.
The shower room was faultless (tasteful and spotless) with a great rainfall shower head and it was a pleasure to use with loads of windowsill space for two women's paraphernalia!!
Finally, although the B&B proports to be 'quirky' and thus covers a multitude of sins, listening to the guests one floor above is totally not acceptable. Every creaking floorboard, every toilet flush and,on occasion, even normal chatter could be experienced below.
My suggestion is to create a false ceiling as it is a typically high Georgian one, and pack it tight with the best sound insulation available.
And finaly, finally, please take your prices back down to the original price that we paid of £130 per night and it may then be deemed value for money.

So much was wrong with our stay, it's difficult to know where to start. We arrived having received a number of calls to my mobile, as we travelled to Lime Regis, from an unknown number. When we tried to answer these calls, no one was there and no voice messages were left. Calling the number back simply took us to voice mail. When we arrived at the Hotel, we discovered what the number was - it was printed on the keypad of the lock on the front door. We dialed it again, and once again got voice mail. Having waited outside the hotel, eventually the number was answered, apparently they had been calling to give us the door code, but surely they could have left it as a voice message? Not a promising start. Having got in, our key was in an envelope inside the main door - there was no reception, in fact there was no one, not a soul, a fact that was totally unclear on their website. Our room overlooked the front and when we let ourselves in, it was stifling. A note suggested that if the room was too hot the thermostat was in the landing! The heat of the room was clearly due to the fact that there was double glazing set back from the actual windows and opening both provided some ventilation. We stayed 2 nights and neither of us slept a wink. Opening the windows to cool the room meant that the noise from the traffic and local youths was a constant annoyance, but it was nothing compared to the noise of the hotel. The walls appeared to be paper thin, the floors wooden with no carpeting and the doors ill-fitting, meaning that as we lay in bed we felt like we were listening to a herd of elephants stomping on the floor above us, or clomping up and down the stair case, until the early hours. Eventually we had to close the window and double glazing as the constant external noise was deemed worse that the heat. Having eventually got to sleep we were woken early on both days by the herd once again, but in reality clearly only being the movements of one or two people as they got up and subsequently left. Breakfast was a hamper delivered to our door by 8.30am, except that on our first day, it was not delivered at all, and guess what? Calling the only number we had went to voice mail again. We left a message but go no reply. Eventually our call was answered. The second day we did get our hamper but it was late and arrived just before we had had enough and were about to try calling again. So what about the other facilities? The bed as very 'firm', in fact so hard that sleeping on the floor on top of the pillows seemed a better option. Also, for those who are tall like me, be aware that the bed had a foot board, so the only option was to lie in it sideways and hope this did not disturb the wife too much - most uncomfortable. And lastly, the 'bathroom' which clearly for some rooms only contains a shower, had a problem with the shower in that it had no temperature control. It clearly did at some point, but maintenance had been lacking and it only had one temperature - boiling. So all in all not pleasant. They were very apologetic about the breakfast, but if your hotel is being run for significant periods totally devoid of staff (ie. except when they come to clean the rooms), you had better make damn sure that the only telephone number guests have is ALWAYS answered. Lime Regis was a wonderful place and I very much hope to go back, but when we do, I assure you we will not be staying at the HIX Town House.

Room Tip: If you do stay here, make sure you get a room which does not overlook the road to the front of the h...

Mark Hix now owns and is undertaking a refurbishment - the rooms are totally individual and fun - the breakfast hamper is very well put together. Very well located, but you need to fairly mobile to walk up the hill to the car park!
I am sure it will be stunning when finished, the refurbishment doesn't Get in the way of staying at the moment, although the prices were discounted

After visiting 1 Lyme Townhouse before in the not too distant past, we were really excited and expecting great things. We knew our experience wasn't going to be matched as soon as we arrived - we were met by a girl who was unenthusiastic and didn't tell us anything about the room, carpark, breakfast, check out times etc, we were not made to feel welcome at all, especially compared to last time when we were met by amazing hosts. However our room was amazing and finished to a high standard (we stayed in room 8). lovely furnishings, towels, comfy bed and a little garden area. It was a nice touch having the nespresso coffee machine too. Our biggest disappointment however was the breakfast. A bowl of cereal, yoghurt, orange juice and fruit does not equal a £130 bill!!! We were so disappointed especially after our wonderful hamper last time which was positively brimming with breakfast choices. We would love to have given this place a good review as the room was so special and it is in a good location, but the service and breakfast was so dire that it is hard to give it anything more.

Just what we needed - wanted to recharge on a weekend break, and had a lovely stay in the hotel.
Arrived in the evening, but had no problems getting into the room, thanks to good instructions.
Room 8 is at the back of the house and really quiet (the only sound is the breakfast hamper preparation in the morning).
Entrance hallway, nice bathroom with big shower (got warm enough although not really hot) and a nice big room.
Breakfast hamper in the morning was just great - fresh fruit, fresh orange juice, and savory and sweet breakfast pastry. Since we love having breakfast in bed, this was just fantastic.
All in all a lovely stay!

We spent one night here in Room 6, recently decorated and immaculate with a really quirky 'fishing' theme complete with puffer fish lampshade! We were given very clear instructions about what to do if we arrived when no one was there to check us in and this was no problem. The breakfast hamper was great, included freshly baked savoury muffins, fresh fruit, musili, milk, yoghurt and orange juice. Would highly recommend this place - we will definitely go back.
