“The Wessex Ridgeway”
Reviewed 2 July 2014

Found this place by chance after looking for a single nights stay to start the Wessex Ridgeway. All other places in Lyme wanted min of two nights.
So glad to have found The Old Black Dog as it is a perfect place to start.
Pat and Peter were perfect host on our short stay.
Also Tea room staff were very warm and friendly.
Anyway, lovely clean room ( Twin) and bathroom, plus great breakfast choice to whatever your needs.
All in all would recommend.

We have used the Black Dog many times in the past and it is to my regret that I have overlooked reporting on it until now.

The bed and breakfast facility is located in Uplyme on the main Lyme Regis road on the left as you approach Lyme itself. The property used to be a public house but is now run by Peter and Pat Dench. The property benefits from a large car park,[always at a premium in Lyme] and has a lovely garden as well. If you have the fancy there is a lovely walk, starting at the side of the property which will take you into the town centre.

The property consists of doubles, twin and a family room all of which are well appointed. The rooms have ensuite facilities as well as digital flat screen TV's. The beds are comfortable and tea and coffee facilities are standard.

The building has a lived in feel, but is clean and homely. The hosts are superb, who will always make you welcome and go the extra mile to help.

We are a group of divers and we had to get up early to catch the tide. We would not dream of asking for food at 6.00AM but they were insistant and at 6AM we had our breakfast before setting off. Fantastic.

The breakfasts are ordered the night before and all produce is locally sourced. The cooking is first class and portions to suit your appetite are available. Tea, fresh coffee, fruits and cereals are all standard. Wonderful.

There is a tea room on the property, run by their son Rob which serves teas and also food which are lovely.

As stated before this gem has seen us many times in the past and will do so in the future.

Highly recommended.

Stayed for two nights, lovely hosts Peter and Pat made us feel very welcome. Traditional B&B clean comfortable everything you need, nice and quiet. Contemporary and modern it's not but hospitality and service which sometimes get left behind are abundant at the Old Black Dog.

We stayed here for one night because we were visiting River Cottage, and can honestly say that we received the warmest welcome we have ever experienced in any hotel or guesthouse!
I hope Pat and Peter won't be offended when I say that the guesthouse is of old fashioned style, lots of period features, but this isn't a bad thing. Our room was comfortable, with a very spacious bathroom and was very charming. A very generous array of toiletries were also provided in the bathroom.
Breakfast was delicious, and freshly cooked to order.
Pat and Peter are extremely nice people, very friendly, accommodating, and keen to help you make the most of your time in Lyme Regis and enjoy your stay. They really made our stay here special. Nothing was too much trouble for them.
The guesthouse operates on a cash only basis, so bear this in mind. The parking is proportionate to the size of the guesthouse and there is a small tea shop on the premises. The guesthouse itself stands in a quiet location, very easy to find, and a mere 5 minutes drive into the quaint town of Lyme Regis, and to River Cottage.
We loved the time we spent here and would be keen to visit again to explore more of the area. We would definitely stay at The Old Black Dog again.

Old fashioned in the very best sense of the words - Pat and Peter are kind and attentive hosts. The bedroom had everything I needed - clean and well looked after. My bed was supremely comfortable and the breakfast was delicious - local sausages, great bacon, perfect scrambled egg. Thank you.

We had a very pleasant stay at the Old Black Dog on our way to Cornwall. The owners made us feel very welcome and were more than happy to accommodate our new baby. Breakfast was great and the walk to Lyme Regis along the stream was lovely (only 15mins with a pram). This is a great affordable option just outside of the centre.

Driving into Lyme Regis (Sept 2013) and just stopped off at the Old Black Dog, Uplyme. Very nice tea room with a warm, friendly welcome. Fantastic selection of real tea and out of this world homemade apple cake. Yum! Owners were very friendly, and even went out of their way to find directions for us.
