“Great location, great staff”

A great old inn at the centre of Lyme Regis. We stayed for two nights in King Edward's room, which I think is the best suite, 2 adults and 2 kids, 9 and 10. The room was big enough for the two Z beds we needed for the kids. Clean and newly decorated, nice old furniture made from real wood. Only complaint was the shower which had all the power of a nonagenarian's nightly emission. My 9 year old got over-tired and slept from 6 - 9 pm and when he awoke was hungry. Although the bar had stopped serving food they made an exception for him - good service.

We have just had a very welcome break staying again at the Royal Lion. Everything about this hotel is perfect. Location - brilliant, lots of free parking. Then a short walk and you are on the beach!! The staff are just so nice, Susie in the bar is very welcoming and knows how to pour the best gin and tonic (and every gin you can think of is there!) very relaxing indeed. Then the restaurant, great breakfasts and dinner is very good indeed. We were here last November and we thought the food was even better this time. Lots of choice, wonderful fish every day and locally sourced meat and poultry. Lovely atmosphere in the restaurant as well, the staff are superb and cannot do enough to help. Can't wait to return with our grandchildren so they can sample the pool and games room.

This was one of the best hotel experiences we have ever had! We stayed in the King Edward room which was wonderful and equally as good as Stockholm's Hotel Esplanade and Iceland's Hotel Budir. The staff were quite simply incredible. The service was faultless. The food was as good as Fortnum's Fountain restaurant in London and the Dining Hall takes your breath away when you see it for the first time. Our room (stayed in by King Edward V11 when he was Prince of Wales) was glorious with an excellent bathroom. Huge attention to detail in all areas of the hotel and its service made this a hugely enjoyable experience. We loved it and cannot wait to return. Perfect location! Right in the heart of Lyme Regis. Thank you to everyone for making our stay so perfect.

Stayed for 4 nights in early Jan, delightful hotel with a super ambience and very good value for money. As frequent visitors to the Jurassic Coast we had often walked past this hotel and on occasions sampled its ales and bar food. This year we had the opportunity of staying and were not disappointed. Our room was quite large with its own en suite facilities and wonderfully warmed by a large radiator, it being rather cold outside. Evening dinners and breakfasts were excellent. Very convenient location for exploring Lyme with its own free car park. There are many super walks which we intend to complete in the future. Will certainly be returning.

This is exactly how a small hotel should be run. Clean and well maintained, it shows real signs of care and investment. You might criticise it for being old fashioned but at every level it delivered what I could expect. The website doesn't fully do it justice. There is Wifi. A jacuzi and a sauna. The menu changes daily. The food is very good. They welcome dogs.
The staff are well chosen and attentive.
No, it isn't the cheapest place I've stayed but the package we chose (dinner, bed & breakfast) made absolute sense and provided a very welcome break. We will return.

At the heart of the idyllic town of Lyme Regis, 'the Pearl of Dorset', is the Royal Lion Hotel, a stunning haven located in the middle of the High Street, with its own private car park. Lyme Regis is a picturesque town on the West Dorset border, part of the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage site. Steeped in history, it is renowned for its fascinating past, mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, the unique fossils found in the cliffs and beaches, and for being the central location of the novel and the 1981 film, 'The French Lieutenant's Woman'. Situated less than 100 metres from the sea, the Royal Lion Hotel is a perfect base from which to explore the locale. Built in 1601 as a coaching inn, the Hotel has been extensively refurbished, yet still retains much of its history and unique charm. Oak beams, wood panelling and open fires help to create a warm, welcoming and comfortable atmosphere, with new additions of its own swimming pool and other facilities. Wi-Fi, although not available in the bedrooms, is available to guests in several areas of the hotel. Privately owned and managed, the Royal Lion Hotel has gained an enviable reputation for its friendly service, world class food and wine and leisure offerings. ... more   less
