“Great place to stay.”
Reviewed 2 February 2014

Great little B and B. Just two rooms, but very stylish ones. Quirky and interesting place to stay.
Owners hand printed wallpapers and art work everywhere. Welcomed with a nice cup of tea and home made flapjack.

We stayed here in September 2013 for a long weekend. The stay was planned as a birthday present - part of a larger River Cottage experience - for my fiance Ed.
Ed is extremely hard to please and on our journey back to London he said it was the "best weekend away" he has ever had.

The Arty B&B by the Sea played a major part in the success of our stay. Hugh and his family were extremely welcoming, their home is lovely and quirky, their garden has fab views of the sea and well, we were blessed with very sunny weather which made it pretty perfect!

The bedroom was very clean, smart and well decorate - we loved the blue handblocked wallpaper.
The breakfast was completely homemade, healthy and delicious. Even the crockery was hand made by them!

We were really impressed. Sorry Hugh that this has taken so long to write this review.

This is an absolute one off, with lovely attentive owners. The breakfast was lovely and the bedroom very comfortable, with Hugh's own hand printed wall paper! The only problem is parking but this is not enough to spoil the stay.

Yes it did work for us big time. What a lovely place to stay. Friendly, quirky ,different. If you're fed up of sanitised living and featureless hotel accommodation then this is the place for you.
There is not much more to say about it, now you just have to go and experience it. It might not appeal to the "Mrs Bouquets" of this world, but what did she know about anything. Go and enjoy.

Room Tip: There are only 2 rooms. We stayed in the blue room. It is a delight.

This bed and breakfast should definitely be on your list of places to stay in Dorset. You'll get a friendly welcome, breath-taking views to the sea, and lots of interesting art to enjoy. We stayed just for one night, left with a renewed sense of well being, and will definitely be back.

We were initially put off by the requirement to pay a 50% deposit on booking & the remainder, preferably in cash, on arrival as these are certainly not standard terms. However we looked at the glowing Trip Advisor reviews and were swayed by reports of Hugh & Candida being great hosts and him making excellent bread and preserves so we booked.

We struggled to find the house so phoned Hugh’s mobile for directions and arrived at the house some 10 minutes later to be greeted by a young woman clutching a baby. She announced that Hugh & his wife were on holiday in Sicily & that she was in charge in their absence. We were unimpressed as we had not signed up to that scenario & somewhat irritated that we hadn’t been told of the absence in Sicily earlier (Hugh did not even mention it 10 mins before our arrival when we spoke to him for directions!) as the reports of Hugh & Candida being great hosts had been the thing which had caused us to book.

We were shown up some rather grubby stairs (which did not appear to have had a recent close encounter with a vacuum cleaner) to the Blue Room. Wallpaper, the bed, the small sofa by the window & the decent size shower looked fine. However there was a generally grubby feel about the room and bathroom with cobwebs hanging from a light, the carpet stained and many surfaces dusty.

We went out to eat having first said that we needed to consider things. The young woman said that if we decided not to stay that she had someone waiting who would take up the vacancy from the next day. On return we said that we would stay that one night and go in the morning and asked that she arranged to reimburse our overpayment. This was done without problem at breakfast.

Sadly things then went downhill as the breakfast served to us did not resemble the wonderful breakfasts which several reviewers had spoken of in glowing terms. The blackcurrant jam was great and it would have been good to have some decent bread to put it on. I am fond of homemade bread but unfortunately that served was disappointingly rubbery & tasted of uncooked dough. The milk curdled as it hit my coffee and my “fresh” fruit salad was a dry mix of browning apple, blueberries and kiwi slices. My partner settled for the good muesli and I went hungry as my dentist has long since banned me from eating it. The view from the veranda was good but you can't eat views no matter how good they are.

Perhaps it would have been different if Hugh & Candida were present & hosting as we had expected and perhaps The Little Place is the sort of place people either love or hate. Whatever the reason, it just didn’t work for us.

Thank you for your feedback. We are dismayed by your review, and very sorry you did not have a wonderful time. From hundreds of enthusiastic visitors we have only ever had one who politely suggested that some aspects could be improved (cleaning the jam jars and polishing the silver cutlery). so we are perplexed by your experience.

Sorry that something clearly went wrong with the breakfast (which is usually one of the highlights). Hugh thought he was clear at the time of booking that we would be on holiday when you were to visit. It is not good if you expect the hosts to greet you, although we have confidence in our friends who step in on the occasional time we do need to go away. Our home is an un-modernised Georgian, working artists house so perhaps not to everyone's taste.

We are glad you found the view over the sea from the terrace acceptable, and hope you found alternative accommodation that met with your satisfaction.

with best wishes
Hugh and Candida

Stayed back at end of July...bit slow in getting round to the review! Well, it is a great place to stay, fascinating, intriguing, and very homely! Hugh and his family made me feel most welcome and comfortable. The house is a delight to stay in and Hugh an excellent host. The house is very close to centre of Lyme and has a lovely view from the garden, which is also a great place to have your breakfast! I will be back! :-)

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Come and stay the weekend, or longer, in our beautiful Georgian home in the pretty seaside town of Lyme Regis, the Pearl of West Dorset's Jurassic Coast. Here in Lyme Regis you will never be bored. You can laze on a beach, collect fossils or jetsam from the Victorian dump that is crumbling onto the shoreline. You can trawl the shops or eat yourself silly. It takes a morning to explore the face of this charming Georgian gem, but this is a small town with a large town's appetite for adventure.Turn to the page Things to Do, or ask Hugh when you arrive - what's new? Decorated in handprinted wallpapers, paintings of the coast and of the artist's family, this studio home* is set in the very heart of the town. Little Place is 5 minutes uphill from Broad Street, the main drag, and Langmoor Gardens with its celebrated view and access to the ancient Cobb, the harbour and the beach. We have two rooms with en suite shower, not sea views. You can have breakfast on the verandah with a stunning sea view overlooking Golden Cap, and sit in our garden. Most of the breakfast is home made produce; and we strive to live in an environmentally-friendly way. Parking in nearby pay and display carparks. "One of the prettiest places in the UK" as recently described by John Sargeant, Lyme Regis and especially Little Place continue to be an inspiration to its present artist owners. Here's your opportunity to share that inspiration by staying in a quite unique house in this jewel of a seaside town. This arty house has pedigree. For many years it was the home of Sir Laurence Whistler, The Queen's Glass Engraver. He left his mark on several beautiful windows about the house. This is a creative, working house and we welcome those who respect a quiet atmosphere. Your host Hugh is a working artist with a busy practice in portraits, landscapes, & lino prints together with textiles & wallpaper making. ... more   less
