Sanctuary Bookshop and Booklover's B&B
Ranked #17 of 45 Lyme Regis B&B and Inns
Reviewed 23 September 2008

We spent one night at the Book Lovers B&B, and hope to return for a longer spell ... it's one of the coziest, most enveloping places I've ever stayed! We enjoyed the charming, comfy rooms (complete with everything to make your own tea or coffee), and a large, well-appointed updated bathroom. There was a lovely view of the sea from our window. The breakfast/sitting room was spacious and comfortable, and I loved the shelves and shelves of books in all the rooms ... it was tempting just to hunker down there and read!

Bob and Mariko were marvelous hosts, we felt very welcome, and the location was ideal, just steps from the museum and the sea and shops, and not far from the Cobb. Breakfast was grand, whether you wanted the full cooked English variety, or just some tea and cereal.

As in many old cities, parking can be a problem in Lyme, and we greatly appreciated the use of a small garage a few blocks away, which meant we didn't have to worry about the car.

Note: Located as it is in the heart of Old Lyme, the B&B has quite a few stairs, which wind up and around, so be prepared to negotiate them!

We have just returned from a short stay at the Book Lover's B&B in Lyme Regis. The B&B couldn't be any more centrally located; it is literally a 30 second walk to the seafront or 2 for the shops.

The rooms, although not ensuite, have a bathroom per room which are absolutely immaculate. The room we stayed was very cosy but perfect for a couple of nights stay. Again very clean and had a sofa, hospitality tray with china cups, water, glasses and bottle opener. There is the choice of powdered milk in the room or you are able to fill a jug with fresh milk from the fridge in the kitchen.

The breakfast selection is extensive: full English, Japanese and continental (comprising: pancakes, croissants, cereal, yoghurt, fruit, toast, cheese and meat) and is prepared for the time most convenient to you.

Should the weather not be too good there are plenty of videos and dvds in the breakfast room come lounge which you can make full use of.

Mariko and Bob are the perfect hosts, nothing is too much trouble and I would thoroughly recommend you visit, as they will make you feel extremely welcome.

The Book Lovers B&B sits above the quirky 'Sanctuary bookshop'. The shop, which is owned by the B&B proprieters too, is a delight in itself with not only books but unusual bric-a-brac, quality collectables and a few fine antiques hidden among the books. The lay out of the B&B is as higgledy Piggledy as the shop with walls filled, celing to floor with books. The bedrooms are cosy and reminsicent of a bygone era. The front bedroom has a lovely view of the harbour and the sea which is literally a stones throw away. Charm oozes from this place - the tea tray has bone china cups, a worn tea caddy and the table is draped in a flowery cotton cloth. The furnishings are mostly antique and the floors are all stripped and polished floorboards. The bathrooms (not en-suite but one for each bedroom ) are excellent quality with repro-victoriana at its best. They are also immaculately clean. There is a sitting room overlooking the sea with plenty of video's and, of course, books to read in the evenings. The atmosphere is one of relaxed, shabby chic'. Bob and Mariko, are truly lovely people who make their guests feel at home and relaxed. This is a B&B for people who like clutter, friendship, good books and the sound of the sea. It isn't for minimalists who are into stainless steel, space and designer bed sets. The breakfast is English, with Herring or Japanese options. The food is generous and well cooked. The marmalade, jam and honey was the best quality too. I have stayed in many B&B's, some of them very expensive and dissapointing. This B&B is such good value for money, the hosts just couldn't be more accomodating. I wish them all the best and urge you to go and stay there.

Situated over a bookshop in Lyme Regis the Booklover's Bed and Breakfast is a bibliophile's dream.
As you climb the stairs to your room on the top floor you'll see it's full of books, in several different languages, and covering a vast amount of subjects. If you stay longer than I did you will not go short of reading material!

Unusually, the B&B can serve a Japanese breakfast, if given plenty of notice, if you fancy a change from the, "Traditional English" variety.
The rooms are large, clean and in an olde worlde style that is sympathetic to the building. It also gives the impression that your stay will be an enjoyable and relaxing one.
The bathroom is recently refurbished and huge.

The shop is literally a stone's throw from the beach, you can hear the sea.
It's also very close to a bus stop that serves the south coast if, as in my case, you wish to go fossil hunting in Charmouth.

All in all, recommended!
