The Woodpecker in Spetisbury is the perfect English pub. Firstly it is a free house with a great selection of regular and guest real ales mainly from around the South West plus no less than 7 real ciders (none of the Irish type drunk with ice!). A good selection of wines, spirits and non-alcoholic drinks complete a well stocked bar.
The pub itself is comfortable with plenty of seating and stools for those who want to prop up the bar. There's plenty of parking for passing traffic and lots of locals regularly use the Woodpecker - always a good sign in an pub.
The menu is straightforward English pub grub, but don't let that phrase put you off. The quality of the food is fantastic - recently we had amazing fish and chips, home-made burgers and a perfectly cooked rare steak. The young lady who serves the food is smiley, polite and very efficient.
That's true of all the staff who really make customers feel welcome.
Not often we leave a pub determined to return - but in the case of the Woodpecker its only a question of time because we're lucky enough to live walking distance from its front door.
