“Terrible experience don't go!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 June 2013 via mobile

This hotel has poor staff in the day and no staff at night, so when a large group of guests held a party playing loud dance music and climbing onto the fire escapes to talk and smoke until 03:30 there was nothing to be done. In the morning the staff didn't apologise they simply told us that "we used to have a night porter but he didn't like working nights". The cross keys down the road is much better.

Just popped in for a beer and was seduced by the food offer of 2 dishes for a tenner. As it happens I didn't avail myself of this offer but chose the chicken caeser salad from the a la carte menu. This was brought to the table reasonably quickly and had plenty of succulent chicken in it together with the more normal components of the dish. I thoroughly enjoyed it and ended up leaving quite full after eating what I thought would be more of a snack! I will be returning to sample other dishes from their menu.

Room Tip: Didn't stay so cannot comment - the hotel is in a central location though.

I stayed recently with work colleagues.

The hotel is centrally located but suffers from being in an old building. It is evident that various modifications have been made and one has some sympathy for the owners as the structure cannot be easy to adapt to meet the expectation of modern guests.
Getting the right room can be a lottery - some are sumptuous and spacious - others seem to have been fashioned from former broom cupboards. If you are offered Room 4 I suggest you press for an alternative as it is very cramped. Traffic never seems to die down on the busy through road so you will not wish to open the windows - indeed this might prove impossible. It was cool when I stayed but the presence of fans in the wardrobes suggest it can become oppressively hot on a summer night. Rooms have all the mod-cons one might expect but the WiFi signal was very weak.

We only took breakfast in the hotel. This was adequate but scarcely inspiring.

If I return to Saffron, I am afraid I will look for other accommodation options. Overall, the owners need to consider how best to modernise the structure to match modern expectations.

Room Tip: Avoid Room 4

Had a disappointing stay at the Saffron Hotel.

It's pretty old and creaky, the breakfast is very average and the whole place smells like an old people's home.

None of this would have been a problem, however the noise levels coming from the outside terrace in the evening / night time are totally unacceptable.

My partner and I live above a pub and are not intollerant to a bit of late night noise - we are are used to "pub sounds" ie chatting and laughter drifting up from the street below.

Despite being on the top floor at the Saffron (room 14) we were unable to sleep for two nights running due to drunken shouting and singing coming from the hotel's terrace. The second night we called the Duty Manager around midnight to ask if he would speak to the guests and ask them to keep the noise down. I need to emphasise the drunken noises were very loud and yobbish - actual shouting and yelling and not normal talking and laughter.

His response: The bar is closing soon so they will "probably" leave soon.

I would understand if this was Ibiza, but it is not acceptable to pay for a hotel room in a quiet village and not be able to sleep until 1am.

If you want to stay in a rowdy place full of drunk people, this is the place to for you. Otherwise there are lots of other lovely places to choose from. Next time we will be staying at Cross Keys.

Room Tip: Room 14 had a big exposed beam going through the middle of the room if you are into that kind of thi...

My wife and I stayed at the Saffron Hotel for one night in April 2013. The room was spacious enough although , because it is an old building the floors made you walk as though you were drunk. (It was the floors - honest). The heating wouldn't work for us but a member of staff got it going very quickly. The room had secondary glazing and although we are light sleepers, and our room overlooked the main road, traffic noise was not a problem, however I think we had Nellie the Elephant practising a ballet routine in the room next to us.
We ate in the restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed the meal in spite of the fact that the menu looked very limited, house red was acceptable too.
Parking is the big problem so I would simply recommend that if you arrive by car the only was to avoid the hassle is to stay somewhere else. If you can't park in any of the limited number of spaces you have ten minutes walk to and from your vehicle. Having said that after going out and coming back twice we did manager to get an overnight spot - just born lucky I guess.
Would I stay there again? - If arriving by public transport definitely yes but if arriving by car definitely no.

The Saffron hotel is situated in an old market town and you want to like it but can't! There is a lack of parking (4/5 spaces in the road close by, 2/3 spaces at the back), the rooms are in desperate need of refurbishing (I stayed in room 4 which was a single and especially dingy), my telephone didn't work, the room had zero wireless coverage and compared a Premier Inn are really lacking i.e. TV screens are small, bathrooms minature etc. The in-room menu says a continental breakfast is only served from 7am although I was told breakfast started at 7:30am which is way too late for business customers! The bar staff were very polite and the gammon steak well cooked and hearty but feature and decor wise it's severely lacking.

Room Tip: Don't stay in room 4 - old and needs refurbishing!

To hotel is a very old building with lots of charm and the room was very clean and spacious
The restaurant served top class food , the staff were a bit on the rude side though.
Only real drawback is the very limited parking
