“Unspoilt, rustic country pub”
Reviewed 19 July 2014

We spent a very pleasant Saturday evening dining in this lovely country pub. We had our dogs with us that were made very welcome in the main bar. The atmosphere was homely and the landlady was very helpful and welcoming. We all dined well, the food was simple but wholesome and all five of us had empty plates at the end! There was a good choice of beers, I enjoyed some Adnams Broadside. This pub has extensive gardens so would be a good lunchtime venue on a sunny day. There is also a restaurant area away from the main bar. I wish the new landlords well, they have made a good start.

“Sunday lunch”
Reviewed 30 December 2013

A warm welcome upon arrival at The Bell, not just from the landlord and locals, but also from the lovely log fire blazing in the bar. It is also a dog friendly pub.
The sunday lunch was a very generous helping and delicious.

“Great food in old world surroundings”
Reviewed 21 December 2013

From the warm welcome of the landlord in a cosy "real fire" lit bar, to a fine selection of real ales and on to an excellent meal at very reasonable prices, this pub is worth seeking out for lunch at any time. My 'lamb tagine with rice' was delicious, my granddaughters "pulled beef pie" was mouth wateringly good, the puddings elegant and tasty and the service friendly and efficient. Truly one of the best pubs I have visited.

“This Pub is the Hub of Wendens Ambo”
Reviewed 2 November 2013

Now re-opened by owner landlords Bernie & Geoff Bates. Friendly locals, good real ales, unusual lagers and roaring winter fire. Dog friendly too. Bar meals or dining room. Cozy ! Big garden with play equipment. Popular with walkers, cyclists and returning commuters. Well worth a visit.

“Good country pub”
Reviewed 21 April 2013

The bell is in the pictureaque village of Wendons Ambo close to Audley End country house and gardens. We had lunch here on a lovely sunny Saturday. This is a slightly strange place and good do with sprucing up (especially the toilets) but in its ecclectic chaos the key aspects of a country pub are right. First, the beer, there is a marvelous selection of real ales from the tap - which is hard to find these days. Second, the food, while nothing special is full of flavour and good quality - think traditional pub grub done well - which is actually hard to find these days.

There are extensive gardens and a lovely sun terrace to sit in - if the place had some attention and a tidy up it could be a real gem. It is worth the trip for the real ales. But importantly unlike som may of the gastro pubs in the area the bell is not pretending to be anything it is not - which is, in its own way refreshing.

Better than three stars but not quite four stars for me - but given the quality of the ale and the lovely relaxing time we had here it would be too harsh to give it 3.
