“Lunch”
Reviewed 4 March 2014 via mobile

Today was a special day for me and Mom it was the laying of my fathers ashes and his 75th birthday .Once this was done I took my mother to the Cross Keys Hotel and Bar in Saffron Walden .
It has recently had a refurb to a high standard , we were greeted very quickly by the floor manager in a very polite and friendly way and shown to our table .
We had the three course set menu at little over £15 per head .
I can honestly say it was one of the nicest and most relaxed places for a lunch I have been to in a long time and the food first class .
We had grilled sardines on toast for the starter each and the beef and ale pie with new potatoes with perfectly cooked vegetables and drinks which all came to a reasonable £77 .
Will I go again yes I will - would I recommend it Yes !

this review is based on 2 visits over the last month , the first visit was excellent , the 2nd , not quite so good

the place has been refurbished a few years ago and looks great , nice atmosphere , the staff are good , although probably not quite enough for when it's really busy , the food is of a high standard and well cooked
the bad points were that on the 2nd visit we were in the front room which had loads of candles and with the halogen lights you could see a smog of candle smoke , this disappeared once the lovely log fire got going , but we did come home smelling like we'd been standing next to a bonfire ,
the wait from ordering to being served was just at the point of becoming too much , about an hour on both occaisions , but if you're in good company this is not a major problem ,but the place was packed and was not that surprising
prices are slightly higher than average , we paid £120 for 4 mains and desserts and a couple of drinks
on the first visit i had the cod and chips which was awesome the 2nd visit i had the steak and ale pir which was very good , but only came with veg , could have done with pototo ,fries etc
all in all , well worth a visit ,just needs a bit of teaking here and there to make it better ,will definately be back

Rebecca and I had lunch here this week. Simply delicious, great service and great surroundings. We had cream of onion soup which was lovely. I also had smoked salmon with a garden mint sorbet. It was an explosion of taste and textures. The coffee could have been stronger but that was the only negative. I would recommend this place anytime and especially after a visit to the market on a Tuesday.

When the cross keys re-opened it was great. We went last night for a steak meal. Had horribly greasy mushroom and prawn dipper starter....yuck, followed by a steak which was 1/3 horrible fat. When my husband mentioned it to the waiter his response was ' well you did ask for medium rare sir' . Yes we did, a medium rare steak not fat! And the whole thing was just greasy. To compensate we were offered free desserts. £75 for 2 tasteless meals..... Won't be going back!! Shame as this has been 'our' pub for 30 years!!!

I live locally and eat out in the area regularly. This place used to be superb a year ago - good, if slightly pricy food, served by some excellent waitresses who were stellar at meeting and greeting and making you feel welcome as you had your meal. They must have been excellent for repeat business. Paying over the odds seemed almost a bargain. I felt at the time the people who run the place did not realise what an asset they had in their staff and I feel even more sure of it now they have lost them. The Cross Keys still serves good food - but has lost something with its turnover in staff. Still crowded - 'ladies who lunch and shop at Waitrose' come in for coffee and cakes from the connected coffee bar - so be prepared to share space with Orlando and Poppy in their push chairs. Still probably the best pub to eat in in Saffron Walden - but you'll find better food and better value nearby - eg the Tickell Arms in Whittlesford or the Dog & Duck in Linton.

Had lunch on ta weekday. Set menu good value for well prepared food. Rest looked expensive for what it was. Very busy, and whenever door opens, in comes cold air - try to sit far away from door. Attentive service despite busy time. Food tasty, good portions. Felt a bit more like a wine bar than a pub.

Reviewed 28 December 2013

We visited at lunchtime on the Saturday after Christmas. At 1.30 the place was almost full, which is always a good sign. The staff were friendly but run off their feet, perhaps they were understaffed that weekend? We were sat just outside the kitchen entrance and the creaky flood vibrated behind us at the staff strode back and forth with food. Having waited longer than we prefer to order, we were on the verge of leaving, when our order of Chicken and Pea Risotto and Calves Liver was taken. I glad we stayed as the food was excellent- even if the liver wasn't pink as promised, it was tender and tasty. We shall certainly go back, but the owners can make some simple improvements; dirty menu's need replacing, the lights need to be fixed in the toilets and the cobwebs need to be dusted off the windows. Do these and you get 4 stars.
