I stayed here on a business trip and had booked in for 5 days originally and checked after the third night. Firstly the good points:
Amazing food, lovely accomodating staff, good selection of drinks, beautiful village location. Now for the bad points. I had to change rooms due to the carpet not being very clean. Nothing major, it just needed a good vacuum. When I spoke to a member of staff she was brilliant and sorted a room out next door for me straight away. You don't get a wireless connection in the bedrooms whcih is no big deal as I was quite happy to sit in the bar to finish off my work before dinner.
The major downside was the noise from opposite Room 5 which is where the kitchen staff throw in their clothing at 10pm in the evening. You are subject to a couple of hours of clanking and churning noises from both the washing machine and tumble dryer. After this happened on the first night I spoke to a member of staff who promptly chatted with the chef and asked him not to use the machines after 7pm (which is what is supposed to happen apparently). Unfortunately, I found myself pushing ear plugs in to block out the noise at midnight and eventually just got up and went in and unplugged everything.

I hate moaning when the front of house staff are so clearly eager to please but after two disturbed nights I decided enough was enough and checked out.

I would highly recommend this place for it's quality food and friendly staff but as far as staying here is concerned, I wouldn't come back. If you think you are getting peace, quiet and tranquil moments think again. You may as well set up camp in your laundry room!

Room Tip: Dont choose room 4 or 5

We recently had our wedding ceremony/blessing here. The pub was closed all day and night for our wedding, and we filled the 10 lovely rooms with family and friends over night so all enjoyed breakfast together the next day. The staff were there to help every step of the way, from the planning, to helping us choose the menus and nothing was to much trouble on the actual day itself. There were 46 guests in the day and the food was amazing!! In the evening we had around 160 people in total and the staff catered/served this number very capably. We have had a number of friends go there since because they enjoyed the setting and food so much and being just outside our home town of Saffron Walden its only a short taxi ride away. We can't recommend this place enough!!!!

Room Tip: We had the room 9 which is their best room which filled with light in the morning and you had beauti...

Didn't know what to expect when we visited here but have to say our whole party (8 of us) thought the meal we had was fantastic. There was lots of tasting each others choices. Not cheap but well worth the money and the staff were really friendly.

We stayed here as part of a wedding celebration. This is a good example of what is best about an English pub. Lots of different rooms in which to enjoy good beers and wines. The food was exceptional considering that they were serving for about 35 guests. Our bedroom was out the back and was quiet and the bed was very comfortable. In front of the pub the large village green emphasises the rural location. Yet it is only a few minutes to the main road connecting the M11 and Stansted Airport (about 20 minutes drive away) and Saffron Walden and Audley End Mansion (about 15 minutes in the opposite direction). The only small criticism is the lack of fresh fruit for breakfast (not everybody wants a full English). However, friendly staff, good location and tasty food makle this a good place to stay.

Room Tip: Check on the website, all those who stayed were pleased with their room.

Stopped here for just one night when working in nearby Cambridge. I stopped in room 5 and was very impressed, the room being spacious, very well equipped and very clean. The bed was very comfortable, the sofa a nice touch and a large flat screen multi channel TV. Free wi-fi in the rooms and a good signal too.

The food was very good with main courses ranging from £11. The bar is well stocked and has a good selection of beers on hand pump.
The full English breakfast was also very good quality and plentiful.

There is ample car parking to the front and rear of the Inn and the building is situated right on the village green, and I'm sure this is a wonderful setting on a summers evening.

I will certainly return again
